Trinity Model B Mechanical Setting Tool

for Cast Iron Sleeve Valve Cement Retainers
The Trinity Model B Mechanical Setting Tool is designed to run and set Trinitys Model B Sleeve Valve Cement Retainer. Easy to operate and low maintenance are evident in the design. The tool incorporates both a stinger seal and built-in snap latch allowing the tool to be latched into the retainer with set down weight and released with up-strain or right-hand rotation. This tool can be run time after time by simply moving the drive housing (slip nut on smaller sizes) into place and installing new shear screws. Disassembly is not required between runs on the same location, but is recommended upon returning to the shop. Tool sizes are available from 4 1/2 to 13 3/8 casing. Fewer moving parts and ease of operation make this tool a good addition to your line. The Trinity Model B-1 Mechanical Set Bridge Plug can be run with this tool as well by removing items 23 through 27 and replacing item 1 with item 30. INSTALLATION OF RETAINER OR BRIDGE PLUG ON THE MODEL B MECHANICAL SETTING TOOL 1. Place the top cone of the retainer or bridge plug in the vise and tighten. 2. Apply grease to the stinger section of the setting tool. 3. Stab the stinger section of the setting tool into the retainer or plug using a quick motion. If necessary place a block of wood across the end of setting tool and strike with a sledge hammer. The stinger needs to go in until the latch threads snap into the retainer threads. 4. (3.593-4.312 OD) Place a pipe wrench on the slip nut and turn to the left screwing the latch into the retainer. (5.687-12.000 OD) Place a pipe wrench on the drive housing and turn to the left screwing the latch into the retainer. 5. Stop when the holes in the latch align with the holes in the body of retainer. 6. Install torque screws furnished with the retainer. 7. (3.593-4.312 OD) Align the holes in the slip nut with the groove in the lower mandrel. (5.687-12.000 OD) Align the holes in the drive housing with the groove in the lower mandrel. 8. Install shear screws in setting tool. 9. Place the mechanical slips over the slip nut. 10. (3.593-4.312 OD) With the slip retaining sleeve butted against the stop ring, rotate the slip retaining sleeve down over the mechanical slips. Tighten the set screw in slip retaining sleeve. (5.375-12.000 OD) With the adjuster sleeve butted against the stop ring, rotate the adjuster sleeve down allowing the slip retaining sleeve over the mechanical slips. Tighten the set screw in adjuster sleeve. RUNNING INSTRUCTIONS 1. The tool should be run at a moderate speed avoiding sudden stops. 2. Avoid right-hand rotation transmitted to the setting tool. As a precaution, after every 10 stands the tubing or drill pipe can be rotated to the left by hand until torque is felt. 3. At desired setting depth, rotate tubing to the right a minimum of seven turns, releasing the slips onto the cone. 4. Pull into the tubing in one continuous pull. See chart below to view the recommended tension. It is important to calculate this tension through tubing stretch. Do not rely on weight indicators. 5. After desired pull is reached, lock down the break on rig to allow setting force to reach retainer. Hold the tension approximately five minutes, then slack off pipe and set approximately five to ten thousand pounds weight down insuring retainer or plug is securely set. Retainer Size Minimum Tension Maximum Tension 3.593-4.312 22,000 lbs. 30,000 lbs. 5.375-6.312 30,000 lbs. 45,000 lbs. 7.125-12.00 35,000 lbs. 48,000 lbs. TEST OPTIONS 1. The tubing or drill pipe can be pressure tested by simply pulling up five thousand pounds at the tool and applying pump pressure to the tubing. 2. The retainer can now be tested for seal-off by applying pressure down the annulus or by slacking off five thousand pounds weight on retainer and applying pump pressure down the tubing and pumping into formation ? These tests are performed before the setting tool is released from the retainer ? If seal-off has not been accomplished, up-strain on the tubing can again be applied and the tools can be retested until seal-off is accomplished RELEASING RETAINER 1. Hold an up-strain of approximately one thousand pounds on the tubing. 2. Apply torque to the right until torque screws are sheared. Each screw requires 200 - 400 foot-pounds. 3. Continue right-hand rotation for ten turns or until latch is felt releasing ? After releasing from retainer, the setting tool can be relatched into the retainer with three to five thousand pounds set-down weight. This stabilizes at two thousand five hundred pounds with repetition. ? The valve will open when the stinger is fully engaged into the retainer and will close with a 2 inch upstroke at the tool. The stinger will remain sealed in the bore as long as snap-out force is not exceeded.

Model T Fury Hydraulic Setting Tool

DESCRIPTION: The Trinity Model T is a hydraulic setting tool used to set packers, bridge plugs, or cement reatiners. Features: Tubing conveyed Can push tools to bottom in deep or deviated wells Tubing will fill and drain automatically Setting pressure may be adjusted by varying the number of cylinders Three cylinders (pistons) standard Setting tool will couple to adapter kits made for the Baker E-4 Pressure Setting Assembly OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE: Run the Model T Fury 20 Hydraulic Setting Tool and Bridge Plug/Cement Retainer several feet below the setting depth. Note: The Fury circulation ports are located below the ball seat. These ports will allow the tubing to fill going in the hole or for circulating a maximum rate of BPM while going in the hole. Well fluid must clean and free of debris (sand) for the HST to work properly. Warning: The setting sequence will begin at 1,253 psi differential pressure in the tubing at the tool (see below). Pick up slowly to setting depth to remove slack from tubing string. Drop a 5/8 diameter brass ball and slowly pump down until it has seated (monitor pressure increase). Slowly pressure workstring to establish a 1,253 psi (1,753 psi max) differential pressure inside the tubing at the tool to begin the setting sequence. Setting pressure will vary depending on which Bridge Plug/Cement Retainer is being set. Maximum differential pressure to set 50,000# shear stud is 3982 psi at tool. In order to apply the proper setting force to the tool, both hydrostatic and pump pressure must be considered. Releasing Procedure: The Model T Fury will release as soon as subject Bridge Plug or Cement Retainer is set. NEVER overpressure the tool in attempt to shear off. If unable to shear, bleed off tubing and apply overpull to value of shear stud to release the tool. Thru-tubing: For Thru-tubing operations, Trinity Tools is exclusive provider of our 1.406 inch OD hydraulic setting tool.

Extra Range Bridge Plug

Wireline Set DESCRIPTION: The Extra Range Bridge Plug is a specialty plug for running through restrictions and then setting securely in larger diameters below. These restrictions such as seating nipples often force tubing to be pulled before well service can take place. The Extra Range Bridge Plug eliminates this in many cases. Should the plug need to be removed, it is recommended to use a mill. A plug of such a broad setting range requires it to be made of mild steels and a milling process would be more acceptable. FEATURES: Electric wireline set Millable Sets in any grade casing including P-110 For temporary or permanent service Ratcheting lock ring holds setting force Runs through restrictions to set in larger diameters

Suggested Drilling Techniques

For Trinity Tools Sleeve Valve Retainers and Bridge Plugs The following is a general guide for the most successful drill out technique: Bit Rotary speed Weight on bit Drill Collars New, medium tooth, hard formation. 80 R.P.M. normal (120 R.P.M. as required). Apply 5,000 7,000 lbs Until the top end of the center body of retainer or plug is drilled away (3-5 inches for 4-1/2 thru 7: and 5-9 inches for 7-5/8 and larger tools). Additional weight can now be applied across the full bit diameter (i.e. 4-1/2 bit use 9,000-13,500 lbs. of weight). Minimum of 8 for 4-1/2 thru 5-1/2 tools 12 or more for 7 and larger tools.

Spudding the work string and variations in rotary speed and set down weight should be used to aid in breaking up large metal parts and preventing bit tracking. One or more junk baskets should be used above the bit when normal circulation is employed.

Permanent Miniature Bridge Plug

APPLICATION / OPERATION: The permanent miniature bridge plug is designed to set in coiled tubing or drill collars. It is designed to withstand differential pressures of 10,000 psi at 350F. In house, the bridge plug is successfully pressure tested at 7,500 psi. The bridge plug is available in four sizes: 0.750, 0.875, 1.12, and 1.37, which can be set on slickline or electric line. The permanent miniature bridge plug has opposed, case hardened slips located above and below a three piece rubber pack-off system, manufactured out of either HSN (Highly Saturated Nitrile) or Viton. The pack-off elements are contained by rocker action metal back-up rings that eliminate extrusion of the elements at high temperatures and pressures. A ratchet lock ring retains the setting force applied to the slips and pack-off to maintain a constant sealing pressure. To assure centered setting of the small diameter plug in coiled tubing and/or drill collars, special ribbed cones direct the slips to evenly spaced positions against the pipe. Should it be necessary to remove a permanent bridge plug after setting, a milling process is recommended as the plug is constructed of mild steel and is not considered drillable. The miniature permanent bridge plugs have many advantages: 1. The small O.D. of the bridge plugs allow them to be run in tubing with size restrictions like coiled tubing, and still form a fluid tight seal against the tubing wall. 2. In addition to electric line, the plugs also can be set with a pressure activated safety firing head or a jar down firing head. 3. Depending on the size of the bridge plugs, setting sleeves are available to attach to the 0.875 setting tool. All Permanent Miniature Bridge Plugs are now available in a pump-through configuration with a check valve rated to a standard cracking pressure of 25 psi and a pressure rating to 6,000 psi. Adjustable cracking pressures are available on request. Trinity Tools is pleased to announce the successful design, testing and manufacture of the 0.750 Permanent Miniature Bridge Plug and 0.750 Multi-Stage Setting Tool. A 0.750 setting sleeve is used on the 0.750 Multistage Setting Tool only.

Firing Heads
Depending on the wellbore specifications and the particular slickline application, the system is assembled with either a jar down firing head or a pressure activated safety firing head. Pressure Activated Safety Firing Head The operator lowers the bridge plug into the well to the required depth. Wellbore hydrostatic is used in conjunction with pump pressure to determine the correct amount of shear pins to be placed in the pressure activated safety firing head. When the correct pressure is reached, the pins shear allowing the firing pin to strike the ignitor. The ignitor lights a fuel cell which starts the release of a slow burning gas. This pressure moves the piston in the setting tool upwards to set the permanent bridge plug within the coiled tubing. The grippers hold the bridge plug from sliding up and down the well, while the compressed elastomers form a sealing plug in the pipe. The shear stud in the bridge plug shears leaving the bridge plug in the coiled tubing. The bridge plug is nonretrievable. A) Half a brass pin shears at 1050 psi.* B) A full brass pin shears at 2100 psi.*

Jar Down Firing Head The jar down firing head operates with mechanical force rather than pressure. A wireline tool string complete with weight bar and spang jars is attached to the setting tool. The operator runs to the required depth, and jars down onto the firing head shearing the pin and pushing the firing pin body to strike the ignitor. The ignitor lights a fuel cell and this starts the release of a slow burning gas. This in turn moves the piston in the setting tool upwards to set the permanent bridge plug within the pipe. The grippers hold the bridge plug from sliding up and down the well, while the compressed elastomers form a sealing plug in the pipe. The shear stud in the bridge plug shears leaving the bridge plug in the coiled tubing. The bridge plug is non-retrievable.

QUP Retrievable Bridge Plug/Packer

DESCRIPTION: The Retrievable Bridge Plug/Packer was designed for well control when nipples are damaged or non-existent. The Retrievable Bridge Plug/Packer features the same patented ratchet and release mechnaism of the QRTP which, has been used to successfully set and retrieve hundred of plugs. As the inner mandrel is being drawn up, the steel screws in the slips ramp moves in the slots in the gripper cage until they bottom out. This in turn pulls the ramp away from the elastomer anchorage to the tubing wall. The Retrievable Bridge Plug/Packer can hold pressures of up tp 7500 psi from both directions and still be retreiveable through restrictions. A standard GS Tool is required to release this tool. The Retrievable Bridge Plug/ Packer has been designed with small diameters, so it can be set anywhere in the production tubing with slickline, e-line and/or coil tubing. Due to extreme downhole temperatures, the elastomers may bond to the production tubing. However, the Retrievable Bridge Plug/Packer can still be jarred through the elastomer without being caught in the slips. APPLICATIONS:

THD Mechanical Service Packer

OPERATING PROCEDURES Setting the Packer Run the packer to setting depth. Run the tool slowly, approximately one stand per minute to 90 seconds, as with any hold down type packer, to prevent dragging of the hydraulic hold down buttons. The unloader remains open while running in the hole. At the setting depth, make the last motion upward, then rotate _ turn to the right at the packer, slack off on the tubing, set down weight on the packer. This sets the slips, closes the unloader and compresses the packing elements. Set down enough weight to achieve desired pack-off on the packer. RELEASING PROCEDURE Pick-up on the tubing at the packer to open the unloader. Allow time for the tubing and casing to equalize. Continued upward movement of the tubing unsets the slips, relaxes the packing elements, allowing the packer to freely move uphole. For Auto-Jay packer: tool automatically re-jays the packer with upward movement of approximately 12; after which the packer may be run down below its initial set position. If running a manual J the packer must be rotated back to the left _ turn after picking up the packer to engage the Jay. The tool may now be moved and reset or pulled from the well. After the THD Packer is set, pressure can be applied either above or below the tool. The unloader is held closed by the compensating piston with pressure from below. This insures that the unloader valve remains closed during testing or treating operations. Applied tubing pressure will also be applied to the hold down buttons, forcing them against the casing wall and preventing upward movement of the packer. Pressure applied above the packer will be directed between the compensating piston and the seal receptacle, also holding the unloader valve closed. This pressure will also force the hold down buttons to retract into the hold down body, away from the casing wall. In cases where there is a differential pressure in favor of the tubing where trying to release the packer, applied casing pressure will retract the hold down buttons, and balancing pressure across the unloader valve, making it easier to retrieve the packer. PRESSURE AFFECTED AREAS The THD packer is equipped with a compensating piston, the area which must be considered in tubing movement analyses. The following chart indicates the piston and direction of the force acting on the mandrel due to pressure differential at the packer. Other factors such as tubing movement due to temperature change, piston effect, ballooning and buckling must be considered separately to determine all the forces acting on the packer.

EXAMPLE: Consider a 5-1/2 packer set on 2-3/8 tubing with the backside loaded and the tubing dry causing a 3,000 PSI differential at the packer. From the guide, pressure from above acts down 2 2 on the mandrel across .67 in. . Multiply the pressure (3,000 PSI) by the area (.67 in. ) results in 2,010 lb. tension at the packer over tubing weight required to open the unloader.

Thru Tubing TFH

DESCRIPTION: The TT-TFH is designed to run and fully set either bridge plugs or cement retainers inside 2 3/8 or 2 7/8 inch tubing on coiled tubing then squeeze in one trip. Run the TT-TFH/SVCR tool string below the predetermined setting depth, pick-up to remove slack, drop a diameter brass ball then, pressure the workstring to establish a 1,000-psi differential at the tool to begin the setting process.
