SHUMLA are outdoor inquiry-based hands-on lessons taught with replica artifacts and other visual aids designed to engage students of all ages in active learning about how the sciences connect with the arts and the past. Between 10-30 students, sometimes five classes a day, students were encouraged to engage in critical thinking skills by asking thought-provoking questions and leading students to arrive at not only the answer but to further questions that need to be answered to solve the problem.
