AGGREGATES
What is Aggregates?
They generally consist of sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, recycled concrete and geosynthetic aggregates. A composite material of concrete. and asphalt concrete Aggregate serves as reinforcement to add strength to the overall composite material.
Types of Aggregates
Natural Aggregates are generally classified as:
1.
Fine Aggregates The purpose of the fine aggregate is to fill the voids in the coarse aggregate and to act as a workability agent.

2. Coarse Aggregate As with fine aggregate, for increased workability and economy as reflected by theuse of less cement, the coarse aggregate should have a rounded shape.

Gradation
Gradation of aggregate refers to the amount
of each size of particle used in the mix. Too large a proportion of coarse aggregate le aves voids that require more cement paste to fill.

Types of Aggregates
Gap-Graded Aggregates produce very pleasing appearance. There is a large percentage of coarse aggregate and a small percentage of fine aggregates with no aggregate in the intermediate size range.

Types of Aggregates
Special Aggregates Decorative aggregates. Include: granite, quartz, quartzite, crystalline, onyx, pebbles, marbles, glass, ceramic, alundum, and emery.

Types of Aggregates
Lightweight Aggregates aggregate use for light weight Structural concrete is produced by heating such materials as clay, shale or slate. Other examples: Perlite/Vermiculite (pyroclastic materials from volcanic eruption) used for building insulation for indoor temperature control (wall filler)

Tyler mesh size is the number of openings per (linear) inch of mesh. To calculate the size of the openings in a mesh the thickness of the wires making up the mesh material must be taken into account.
