Standard: 8th,9th,10th

Activity of this OER

To Perform testing of Hemoglobin content in blood for 3 students minimum To determine whether the person is anemic or not based on the Hb testing

What is Hemoglobin Testing

A hemoglobin test is used to determine how much hemoglobin is in the blood. There are many methods which are manual as well as tested through digital machines We will be learning the manual method of testing blood sample with Hydrochloric acid solution

Video Link for Hemoglobin Testing Please click here to watch video on Hemoglobin testing. The topic further focuses on Hemoglobin Testing.

*** Please note that HB or Hgb means Hemoglobin. These terms are used in this OER. You have to perform the same activity and test Hemoglobin of minimum 5 students in your school Things you can do if you know Hemoglobin Testing - You can analyze whether the patient is anemic based on the Hemoglobin levels determined during test

Till here what you know

Till here, you know following steps in HB testing Pricking and collecting blood sample How to perform HB test Matching the test result with standard codes and find out Hb Level in blood

Till here, what you have done

Till here, activities performed by you You collected blood samples and did Hb testing for 3 students in your school

Activities to do Further
Now you have to find out whether the patient is anemic based on the analysis of blood sample test We begin with a case where Anemia is detected in one person and a cartoon story below

Things to learn further

Following is the sequence this OER will proceed What is Hemoglobin and its structure

What is Anemia , its causes and relation with Hb levels in blood

Introduction In Urban as well as rural areas, we see lot of people affected by deficiency of nutrients produced mainly through malnutrition, junk foods. Anemia is a common problem in urban areas as well as in some tribal areas. The causes of anemia are different .It is caused due to lack of nutrients, starvation in tribal areas or improper dietary habits in urban areas. This OER describes about an important factor of blood Hemoglobin, its testing methods

Cartoon Story
A dialog between Mona and her daughter Hey it's time for lunch. Come soon

Oh no. Just one hour back,I had a burger. I want to type a project report for my school assignment. I will have lunch later. And I dont want that Chappatis with vegetables. I dont like it! This was continuing for many months, due to some junk foods And one day Due to fatigue and weakness due to Anemia, Mona's daughter was hospitalized. The doctor comes with an report and explains it

The Hemoglobin Level in blood is at low level. Here is where, I am going to tell about what is Hemoglobin , problems of low Hemoglobin, symptoms and how Hb is tested

What is Hemoglobin
Hemoglobin is the basic metalloprotein that is present in the red blood cells which are responsible for carrying oxygen. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body.

Till here what you know How to perform HB test and determine Hb level in blood Know Structure of hemoglobin Know Functions of Hemoglobin Questions
What is the main function of RBC? What is Hemoglobin?

Activity to Do Further
From the collected and tested blood samples and based on knowledge of Hb Determine whether the persons whose Hb testing was done are anemic or not

How to know whether the person is anemic?

Based on the Hb testing done and after determining the levels of Hb in blood , If Hemoglobin content in blood is below prescribed normal level, the person is called as anemic or having Anemia

What is Anemia Anemia is caused due to less amount of hemoglobin content in blood .There are prescribed levels of Hemoglobin for all ages and gender If Hemoglobin level falls below that level, the person is said to be anemic or having Anemia PowerPoint Link

Till here what you know

Hb Testing methods Knowledge of Hemoglobin and its structure Anemia and symptoms of anemia Prescribed Normal levels of Hb for genders and ages

Questions What is meant by Anemia? List out its causes

Further Activity to Perform by Learner

Visit a nearest primary health center of any doctor nearby your village/locality and get more information on Anemia.

Make a group visit to a blood testing laboratory nearby your vicinity

Summary
