The purpose of this document is to track the process Wendy went through as she solved a complex search challenge.

Seeing examples of how others solved search challenges can be beneficial; you may gather some insights you can use when solving your own challenges.
State the problem / information need / goal of the research Two well-known anthropologists conducted ethnographic fieldwork in the Pacific Northwest among the Chinook and other tribes. Throughout their lives, each of them published books and papers discussing the phonetics and morphology of regionally-specific, American Indian languages. Their books have been cited in scholarly papers and journals that span a wide array of topics including transpacific displacement and the Harlem Renaissance. These two people knew each other and were colleagues. Ironically, neither of these authors had a degree specifically in anthropology. 1. Name both of the anthropologists. 2. What subjects did the anthropologists have degrees in? 3. Name the book written by one of the anthropologists that was cited by authors writing about transpacific displacement and authors writing about the Harlem Renaissance. 4. Name the book written by one of the anthropologists that was cited by authors writing about transpacific displacement and not cited by authors writing about the Harlem Renaissance. They were both well-written Pacific Northwest anthropologists. They both studied the Chinook. They both have at least one degree. Their publications have been influential across a variety of topics. Their books have something to do with language. They knew each other. I broke the problem into steps. I tracked my progress using Google docs. I used context clues and triangulation of sources to determine who the anthropologists were and what books they wrote. I used Google Books and Google Scholar to verify information. I used Ctrl-F to search within texts and websites. I searched Google Scholar, searched cited by, searched within citing articles, and doublechecked my sources. I used the minus (-) operator to exclude a word from my search. E.B. Tylor was a dead end. Chinook is also a breed of dog. 1. Name both of the anthropologists. Franz Boas and Edward Sapir 2. What subjects did the anthropologists have degrees in? Franz Boas had degrees in physics and geography. Edward Sapir had degrees in linguistics and German. 3. Name the book written by one of the anthropologists that was cited by authors writing about transpacific displacement and authors writing about the Harlem Renaissance. The book was "The Handbook of American Indian Languages". 4. Name the book written by one of the anthropologists that was cited by authors writing about transpacific displacement and not cited by authors writing about the Harlem Renaissance. The book was "Selected writings of Edward Sapir in Language Culture and Personality".
