LEARNING ABOUT SCHOOL MEALS Kathy Green and Bob Sugar were (0) chosen to join one of the groups of experts being sent to school canteens around Britiain for two reasons: they are both (1) chefs, and they work in the media. Kathy writes (2) for a Sunday newspaper and Bob presents TV documentaries. These groups are (3) for finding out how healthy school lunches are, and for working with school cooks to find the best ways of (4) nutritious meals that children will enjoy (5) having to pay too much for them. Kathy reports: It hasnt been easy working with school cooks who are having to (6) with the task of cooking good meals that do not cost a lot, and who may also feel (7) by suggestions that their meals could be (8) . The most important is the Victoria Cross, (2) has been awarded since 1856 to members of the armed forces who (3) shown conspicuous bravery. Unlike the Victoria Cross, the George Cross is (4) a military award. It is awarded to civilians for acts of the greatest heroism or courage in circumstances of extreme danger, and (5) was first introduced in 1940. It is a silver cross (6) a circular design in the centre showing St George and the Dragon. People who have been awarded the Cross are given a tax-free sum (7) money every year.

On two occasions the George Cross has been awarded to a group rather (8) to an individual. In 1942, the Cross was awarded to the people of Malta in recognition of (9) bravery in the face of enemy attacks (10) the Second World War. Speaking (ECCE and FCE)

Speaking
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
Be friendly, and make eye contact with the examiner (and your partner, if you have one). Dont go into a speaking exam chewing gum! Make sure youre familiar with the format of the speaking paper. Youll be more confident on the day of the exam because there wont be any unpleasant surprises! If you get stuck because you cant think of a word, dont panic! Try to express yourself using other words. What you say isnt as important as how you say it. The examiner is assessing you on the way you express yourself, not on your opinions. Listen carefully to the questions and answer what is asked. Do not talk about something unrelated to the question. Dont worry if you make a mistake. Its more important to show that you can communicate. Correct yourself, if you can; it shows the examiner that you are aware of your mistake and that you know the correct form. Always answer questions fully, never with just a yes or a no. Develop your answers by asking why something is true, when something happens, or how you would do something. Answer using complex sentences. Use comparative structures and linking words. If you dont hear a question clearly, dont say What? Ask the examiner, politely, to repeat the question. You are not penalised for this. Eg Im sorry, could you say that again, please?. Do not learn large chunks of information by heart. The examiner will know that this is learnt information and not real communication. You are not expected to have in-depth knowledge of unfamiliar subjects. You are expected to be able to discuss subjects familiar to you. Dont worry about being nervous. All the candidates are nervous. The examiner understands. It will be over sooner than you expect!

Researchers at Yale University studying the effects of smoking on brain development have been observing the movement of water through brain tissue. They included four groups of teenagers in their research: the first two groups were smokers and non-smokers whose mothers had smoked during pregnancy, which is the period when the baby is inside the mother; the other two were smokers and non-smokers whose mothers had not smoked during pregnancy. The scientists observations suggest that nicotine, a chemical in cigarettes, causes teenage brain tissue to develop abnormally. Teenagers who smoke, or whose mothers smoked during pregnancy, are more likely to suffer from auditory attention deficit, which means that they cannot concentrate as easily as others on what someone is saying while other things are happening. The researchers were looking at links between smoking and changes in the parts of the brain that send signals to the ear. The fact that the changes were greatest in teenagers who smoke suggests that the brain is particularly vulnerable to the effects of nicotine at this time in their lives, when the brain is still developing. The researchers had already discovered that smoking affects auditory and visual attention. They now want to scan the brains of teens who have given up smoking to find out whether these changes can be reversed. Scientists already think that nicotine affects the brain development of babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy, but now it would appear that teenagers can also suffer this sort of damage.

71 What is the main idea of this article? a the reasons for teenagers going deaf b the effects of young mothers smoking c the effects of nicotine on brain development d the effects of too much water on the brain

ARTY TOURS, NEW YORK

Are you bored with the usual tours? Are you looking for something more unusual? We are a small tour company who aim to show tourists the other side of New York. We dont conduct tours to the famous big museums like MOMA and the Guggenheim. We take you to studios, shops, galleries, music bars and restaurants that you could never find on your own. Our highly qualified guides have searched New York City in order to offer you something truly unique. MEET THE ARTISTS Visit the sculpture studio, located in an old hat factory, of the sculptor, Charles Cortez. See how he carves those huge pieces of wood. Have a cup of coffee with the artist and really get to know him and his work! Watch Didi Hamilton create her colorful paintings in her Greenwich Village loft studio. Talk to her about her work. Choose your favorite artist from the many we have on our visiting lists. Because we need to fit in with the artists personal schedules, all studio visits must be booked 1 week in advance. PRIVATE GALLERIES TOUR In addition to the famous NY galleries, the city is full of small private galleries which show the work of unknown and up-and-coming artists. See work that is incredibly original and exciting. Great for people who are interested in seeing or purchasing something different. Attend one of the gallery openings and meet the artistic people of New York! JAZZ EVENINGS New York has literally hundreds of jazz clubs hidden away in basements, where you can hear authentic jazz played by dedicated musicians. These clubs are full of history and atmosphere, but are difficult to find and are often in areas where tourists never go. We can introduce you to the real NY jazz scene and you can visit the places where Louis Armstrong and other great jazz artists played, and where great jazz talent is discovered.

CRAFT SHOPS TOUR In such a big city it is only natural that there are a lot of very creative people making things. We have tracked down all the small shops that sell this exciting craftwork. The range of work is huge, from wood, papier mache and ceramic goods to textiles, inluding tie-dyed and batik products. Buy some great souvenirs for your artistic friends!

ARTY FOOD We can take you to where you can taste the most original, authentic food in NY. These places may not look fancy or be in the best neighborhoods, but their food is always brilliant! PAPER 1 Reading (1 hour)
Part 1
You are going to read an extract from a novel. For questions 18, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits best according to the text. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet. I had been standing at the end of the platform for what seemed like for ever. I looked up at the huge clock and worked out that I had only really been there for about forty five minutes. That cant be right, I thought, and turned to see if any other clocks were visible from where I was standing. There were two: a digital one above a coffee stall where the time swapped places with the temperature every 10 seconds, and another huge station clock on a different line 11 platform about 200 metres away. They were all in agreement. The train from my platform slowly started to pull out of the station and I wondered how long it would be until the next one arrived. The noise inside the station was painfully loud. People were running around here and there, some talking, others shouting, and almost all in what seemed to be a mild state of panic. Railway stations are like airports: everyone is there for a specific purpose. If they dont achieve their aim, then there is absolutely no reason for them to be there in the first place. That would result in a waste of time - an unthinkable thought! To make matters worse, the poor sound quality of the speakers made it practically impossible to hear what the announcements were about, so it was difficult to know if your train was arriving at or leaving from a different platform. I had already checked the board three times. It was definitely platform 4. I turned my back to the platform and looked towards the station. As I noticed all the different food places, I was once again reminded how multicultural this city is. There was sushi, a noodles bar, Indian, a sandwich bar, pizza, burgers and Texan ribs all within view of where I was standing. I tried to count how many countries were being represented, but the noodles made that impossible. So I settled on four different nations and at least half a continent.
ECCE -FCE

I looked back towards the platform, but there was still no sign of any train. I started wondering how many people had passed through this station since it first started operating in the late 19th century. I realised that the number must be so enormous as to be impossible to imagine. It must be in the millions, if not billions, and they must represent all walks of life: kings, queens, the rich, the poor, the educated, the barefoot, not to mention every single nationality on this planet. This station has seen it all. All that sound and movement has been absorbed by the dark Victorian bricks of this enormous building. God, I must be bored, I thought. Then, in the distance, I saw the front of a train appear. I hope its this one, I said to myself, although all trains approached from the same direction and then turned off to their platform. I waited a little bit longer until I was sure that this one was definitely coming to platform 4. Great! It was too late for it to escape now. I started feeling a little excited again, as I had for the past three trains that had come in while I had been waiting. It had been such a long time, I wondered if I would recognise her. I had a view of the whole length of the platform and, as the train stopped, all the doors opened simultaneously and hundreds of people started line 71 getting off and walking towards me with their heads bobbing up and down. For no obvious reason, my eyes zoomed in on a beautiful red hat in the middle of the crowd. I watched it get closer and closer, but I couldnt see the face yet there were too many people in front of her. I felt my heart start beating a little faster. As more people passed by on either side of me, I still focused on the hat until everyone was out of the way and I could see the face of the person wearing it. My heart almost burst with excitement!

You are going to read an article about a new laboratory at Oxford University. Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences AH the one which fits each gap (915). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

A Step Forward?
Despite the fact that it has upset a great many people, a new laboratory has opened at the world-famous Oxford University. The reason why it has upset so many is that it is an animal research laboratory. Many feel that institutions as important as Oxford shouldnt be repeating old mistakes and that it is their responsibility to find modern, forwardthinking ways of finding cures for diseases. The Biomedical Sciences Building cost 18 million to build and has taken much longer to complete than necessary. (9) This was because they had received serious threats from groups who are against vivisection (experiments on animals). For 16 months, there was no work done on the building while the university tried taking legal action against animal rights activists in order to protect the builders as well as the staff of the laboratory. It also wanted to create an exclusion zone an area around the laboratory that cannot legally be entered by anyone without permission. (10) There have been many meetings between university staff, senior police officers and government ministers to discuss the heavy security that is needed for the laboratory to be able to function. (11) The new laboratory has been built for a number of reasons. (12) At the moment, Oxford University is running about 130 of these projects on a variety of animals. Another is to move all the animals into more modern, and better, facilities as well as to bring together veterinary experts. (13) Although the new laboratory has angered many animal rights activists, the medical community has welcomed the centre which many describe as worldclass. At the new centre, scientists will test new drugs for cancer, leukaemia, heart disease, HIV, arthritis and diabetes. (14) Others will try to find ways of using fewer animals in experiments as well as improving the life and conditions of those that are being used. Animal rights activists and those campaigning against vivisection are disappointed with the opening of the new centre and say that they want to live in a world where no one wants or believes its necessary to test on animals. (15) They add that it is only carried out when there is no other choice available.

afety tests on animals are necessary before S any medication can be given a licence. centre will be home to mice, ferrets, monkeys and other species like tadpoles, for example. work on the building first began in autumn 2003, but in less than a year, the builders were refusing to continue working on the site. the other hand, those who support the centre explain that animal research plays a very important role in understanding diseases that affect thousands of people around the world.

Is It Always About The Money?

A
Brenda Smith When the time came for me to retire from my nursing job, I knew that I would spend more time doing voluntary work at the shelter for the homeless. I had already been helping out there once or twice a week for more than forty years. Many people think that homelessness is a relatively new phenomenon, but there have always been people living on the streets. Of course, there werent as many as there are now. Its really sad to see how society is failing more and more people over the years. Im at the shelter most days, but I also go out onto the streets or with the mobile soup kitchen. All of my colleagues are great. Everyone at the shelter is really committed and, like me, some have been there for years, so theyre more than colleagues, they have also become really good friends. Weve shared many experiences over the years and seen some terrible sights, too. It always reminds me of how lucky I am.

B
Samuel Pollard Ive always loved drawing. Ever since I was a kid, I used to draw on any blank surface in front of me. Sometimes I drew on things that I wasnt supposed to and Id get into trouble with my parents. Then, as a teenager, I really got into graffiti I was quite well known and I even got asked to do a mural on one of the walls at school. It was only natural that I would do something connected to art, but I never thought Id become a tattoo artist. I adore it though. What makes it special is that, because tattoos are permanent, people really think about what they want before they come to me. They put a lot of thought into it, so it becomes something very personal for them. Quite often, they want names of loved ones who have died or a tattoo that symbolises that person, which makes it all a fascinating process.

C
Nanette Newbury I work at the charity shop once a week. I have my full-time job as a doctors receptionist and a house to run, so my schedule is really tight. There are many things to do. People leave things on the doorstep overnight, so much of the morning is spent sorting out whats been left. We send clothes that are worth keeping to be cleaned and the rest go to people at some programmes we work with, who chop up the material and use it for stuffed toys or cushions. Other items need to be cleaned, categorised and priced. Weve had all sorts of things come through here, from antiques and paintings to designer clothes. And all the money goes to a great cause. Ive even travelled to parts of Africa and seen some of the work weve done. That really makes it all worthwhile.

D
Jamie Forsythe Ive been a bus driver for thirty years. Ive seen a lot of changes over that time. When I first started, all the buses had a conductor who would collect the money and give the tickets to the passengers. Then the new buses came in and passengers paid me as they got on. Unfortunately, a few colleagues were attacked and even killed for the money, so they put the clear plastic screen on the buses to protect the drivers. I felt caged in at first. Now people dont pay on the buses at all they have to buy their tickets in advance and I just collect them, so I dont have any money to steal. I never thought of my job as hazardous when I first started, but thats changed. People are ruder and more violent these days. They seem to be angry all the time, and theres no respect for anything.
