PART - A

Answer all questions. Each question carries 4 marks.

1. Explain the phenomenon of resonance. Give two examples.

2. Compare conduction current and displacement current.

3. Molecular weight of NaCl is 58.5 and its density is 2.18 x 103 kg/m3. Calculate
its inter atomic distance.

4.Explain test of planeness of surfaces.

5. Define Resolving power of an optical instrument. State Ray leigh's criterion for
geometric and spectral resolution.

6. Define photo elasticity. What are 150 clinic and 150 chromatic fringes ?

7. Explain uncertainty principle. Obtain uncertainty in frequency of light emitted


by an atom.

8. What is the phenomenon of time dilation ? With what velocity should a space
ship fly so that every day spent on it may correspond to 3 days on earth's
surface.

9. Give the postulates of Maxwell-Boltzmann and Bose-Einstein statistics. Also


write the distribution equation in the two statistics.

10. Define numerical aperture of an optic fibre. Give some important applications of
optic fibres.

Answer any two from each Module. Each question carries 10 marks.

MODULE - I
11. Derive an expression for fundamental frequency of transverse vibrations of a
stretched string.

12-. Show that E/H is a constant for plane electromagnetic waves and explain the
phase relationship between E and H vectors.

MODULE - II

14/ Describe with experiment, how thickness of insulation of a wire can be determined
using optical methods.

15 Explain diffraction pattern due to a single slit.


b) When a plane transmission grating is arranged for normal incidence, it is seen
that a spectral line of first order coincides with a spectral line of second order.
If the wavelength of former is 800 nm, what is the wavelength of latter ?

16. Explain double refraction. Define construction, working and uses of a


Nicol prism.

MODULE - III

17. a) Derive time dependent and independent wave equation,


b) Explain the physical significance of wave function.

18. Derive Planck's black body radiation formula. Atomic weight of copper is 63.5
and its density is 8.94 x 103 kg/m3. Calculate the Fermi energy of free electrons
in copper.

19. Describe the construction of Ruby Laser and explain with energy level diagram
the working of the laser.
