ArchitectSanchez+Higuera LocationMexico D.F. Size32, # Rooms40 # Floors4 StructureSteel EnvelopeConcrete The Condesa df hotel is situated between two historical facades on a tree-lined street. Architect Javier Sanchez chose to fuse the bohemian surroundings that the building was located in with the modern interiors of India Mahdavi. The buildings 1928 French neo-classical style combines functionalism with unique touches such as custom made furniture and tile flooring. It came to be that the focus of the building was the inner courtyard. The interiors sought to reinterpret the iconic work of Luis Barragan. This can be seen in the color choices as well as modernity of the designs. The hotel hosts a combination of private areas to encourage personal relaxation and open public areas for people watching.

The Opposite House designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, is the guest accommodation part of the traditional Chinese housing style. The Hotel provides a central exterior courtyard as a part of the complex. This style is considered the Shingou-Inn style in China. The hotel itself is also designed with an internal Shigou style with a central atrium surrounded by four separate groups of guests rooms. The design was meant to provide a depth and wealth to atrium while still maintaining the urban quality. The design principles of the Opposite House form a coherent parti, the intersection of volumes, expressed natural materials, visible circulation, the outside-in feeling, light filtration, view and privacy through the syntax of surfaces, screens, constructions, and patterns.

The Yas Hotel is an innovative project located in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Completed in 2009 this hotel holds 500 rooms and a Formula 1 race track over an 85,000 square-meter complex. Asymptotes partners Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture envisioned a landmark with key influences and inspirations from aesthetics and form. The hotels main component is a skin of diamond shaped glass panels which is housed over the hotel proving a dynamic look for tourist. Over 200 meters and 5,800 diamond shaped glass panels this design was inspired by speed, movement, and spectacle to the artistry. It also connects the ELEVATION

ArchitectUN Studio LocationZuoz, Switzerland Size32, 292 SF2 # Rooms66 # Floors5 StructureConcrete EnvelopeConcrete, glass, steel Hotel Castell in Zuoz, Switzerland is situated on a sun terrace with views towards St. Moritz. It was built in 1913 by Nicolaus Hartmann and later renovated and an addition by UN Studio in 2004. Hotel Castell holds 66 rooms over a site of 5,500 square-meters. The building is layed in EastWest direction, giving all rooms a southern orientation and thus giving access to the main view. In order to protect its inhabitans, the offset of open and enclosed balconies is protecting the interior from the intensive Engadin sun. The plan has been kept open and basic to allow for a flexible arrangements of spaces around a central core.

BARCELONA PRINCESS
ArchitectOscar Tusquets Blanca LocationBarcelona, Spain Size193,750 SF2 # Rooms366 # Floors25 StructureConcrete EnvelopeSteel and glass Located on the Mediterranean coast in Barcelona, the Hotel Princess sits on a characteristic triangular plan. The building plays on its location and takes inspiration from the ships that frequent the sea creating a building unique unto the city it was located within. Regulations that were placed on the site stated for a 25-story tower block. If this basic plan was to be carried out the result would have been a squat tower. As another solution the architect chose to utilize two slender towers connected only by a glazed bridge. Each of the volumes is independent of the other only connected by the bridge. Each of the facades of the building uses a different material. These include stained concrete, opaque sheet aluminum, tinted and printed glass, and polished granite. Each of these are used in a unique way to accent the different views that are afforded the patrons of the hotel.

The site chosen for the location of this hotel is at the west end of downtown, which is the most prosperous quarter in Osaka. A huge cleft will represents a remnant of past prosperity and future possibility, serving not only the hotel but the entire area. It is a wedge driven into the area and pointing toward the future. Protected by the wall, the hotel breathes gently. It is a cosy and intimate urban retreat offering freedom and liberation within its confines. 1st FLOOR PLAN

SIMMONS HALL
ArchitectSteven Holl LocationCambridge, MA, United States Size195,000 sf # Rooms350 # Floors10 StructureConcrete EnvelopeConcrete Simmons hall was commissioned by MIT as a new dormitory on campus. They contracted Steven Holl to design the building and he approached it with the usual enthusiasm. He envisioned the building to be like a sponge. Tensions can be seen in the building by the use of opposing elements. These include solid and voids, transparency and opaqueness. The structure came to be like a small city unto itself. This was due to the universitys desire for the students to interact and mingle with one another. Although Holls original ideas were not able to be realized in the final project the overarching themes can still be seen. The openness and the interaction between the different elements allows for the sponge idea to shine through.

Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile ALMA residence is a project of LAN Architecture with its own agenda. Originally seen as a hotel the project took a turn and took on the form of a micro city instead. In this way habitation, commerce, and culture all combine in a single place. The building is comprised of a single structure partially below grade on the site. Driving forces such as orientation and energy consumption helped to create the architecture that was produced. In that way many transitional spaces were created to allow for the experience of different situations. Also, the layout of rooms was largely governed by the views that would be afforded to them. These would include those of the surrounding desert as well as the microclimate areas that were created.

The hotel is considered to be the first design hotel in Croatia due to its interesting and functional design. Nestled within the hills of the forest, the dominant horizontal lines of the hotels exterior design give the appearance of an ocean liner docked in the middle of a forest. The open vertical lobby even resembles that of Frank Lloyd Wrights Guggenheim Museum in New York. The exterior is also complimented by the interior design work as well as its choice of furniture and use of contrasting materials. The overall design of the hotel and its placement within the surrounding landscape also compliments the architects desire for two contrasting entities to have a sense of unity without one dominating the other.

The Axis Viana Hotel in Viana do Castelo, Portugal designed by the Portuguese firm VHM, consist of four overlapping stacked masses that rest upon the first two levels of the hotel. Constructed of glass, aluminum and stone the hotel offers views of Northern Portugal without intruding on the surrounding area. When viewing the hotel from either the North or South the structures silhouette appears long with slight cantilevered edges but when viewed from the East or
West the building then takes on a dramatic zigzag appearance by the voids of space created by the cantilevered masses. The interior of the hotel offers a contrasting feel from the dark exterior skin by incorporating mostly white finishes with thoughtfully placed contrasting dark materials. The interior also allows for the structure of the building to be recognized throughout the hotel yet at the same time provide a softer relaxing tone in the individual rooms.

Eso Hotel is located in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. The desolate site posed a challenge for the designers of LAN architecture. The task set before them was to introduce a level of urbanity to the otherwise barren landscape. They wanted to create a micro city within the building by combining habitat, commerce, and culture together. The building is partially inserted into the natural slope of the site and can be read as a linear prism. The
structure is recessed to accommodate a covered walkway and the westward orientation allows for a clear view of the desert landscape.

ArchitectCapella Garcia Arquitectura LocationBarcelona, Spain Size96, 875 SF2 # Rooms240 # Floors9 StructureConcrete EnvelopeSteel and glass Hotel Diagonal, designed by Capella Garcia Arquitectura, is located on the Diagonal Avenue, the main artery of Barcelona. The building is adjacent to the famous Torre Agbar. This building is a large cylindrical and chromatic piece of architecture. The intent for the hotel was to become a backdrop for the tower. This decision also influenced the black and white color scheme. These colors were chosen due to the influence of piano keys as well. The faade that faces the tower has extruded pieces from the prism that allow for direct views of the city from the rooms. Roof access allows for panoramic views of the Barcelona cityscape and is shaded by a canopy comprised of 90 solar panels.

SHERATON MILAN
Architect King Roselli Architetti Location Milan, Italy Size 50,000 m2 # Rooms 436 # Floors 3 Structure Steel Envelope Glass and pultruded fibreglass panels The design for this hotel was awarded to King Roselli Architetti as the result of a competition. It was to be located in front of the Malpensa International Airport. Originally the building was regarded as a design object. This was in response to Milans position as Italys design capital and the interest of the architects to study the membrane of the building and how it can be conceived. In this way the designers could explore how the skin could be perceived not only as a faade but also as the roof which is visible from the airport. The relationship created between solid and void, the movement of people, the play of light, and the views offered create the dynamic result that was desired.
