Taming the Technology Monster by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

It was very exciting last Wednesday night to see everything that is happening at our church. The 5-Star Dinners are a great opportunity for mid-week fellowship, and we have an excellent lineup of fall classes including "Galatians" with Michael Whittington, "The Jesus Way" with Beth Pattillo and Sandy Smith, "Heart Healthy Living" with Anna Tinkle, "DivorceCare" with Anne Stauffer and Janet Wall, and "Daystar Parenting" with David Thomas and Sissy Goff. Woodmont is a busy place on Wednesday nights, and that is a good thing. This week, Sissy Goff of Daystar will be back to present on the topic "Taming the Technology Monster." The goal is to help parents navigate through the challenges of raising kids in our digital age. Technology now presents a whole new set of challenges to parents that simply were not there a decade ago. But the theme of this class struck me because not only is it relevant to parents raising children, it is relevant to every single one of us. We all have to tame the technology monster in our own lives and keep it under control. Technology is constantly changing and evolving. There are new gadgets coming out every day. We know that email, text messaging, social media, and the internet make life convenient in many ways. We also know that it's really hard to turn them off. Here are some of the dangers that I see. 1. A growing sense of anxiety and restlessness because we are constantly available and expected to reply right away 2. A complete loss of boundaries; work is not left at the office 3. A shortage of face to face interaction and conversation 4. Difficulty being present in the moment without being distracted 5. Lashing out via email when emotions run high 6. Unhealthy addiction to the latest technology 7. A false belief that social media is an acceptable substitute for other types of community 8. Children and adults gaining easy access to pornography 9. Constant web surfing that leads to a lack of productivity at work and at home 10. Growing individualization and a decline in spiritual growth and reflection Don't get me wrong, I could write another article about the many advantages of technology and how it makes our lives easier and more convenient. But I worry more about the dangers that are present if we do not keep it in check. It is

truly a double edged sword. We live in an age of information overload and people do become numb to getting constantly bombarded with updates and information. News travels faster than it ever has before, yet because we know so much, it doesn't seem to affect us the same way it used to. The secret to taming the technology monster is to set limits, to know when to turn it off. The secret is to let technology assist our lives but not run our lives. Setting boundaries has never been as important as it is today. Remember, there is still something very holy and profound about turning the phone off and taking the time to be still, to be quiet, and to connect with God. When was the last time you took a technology Sabbath, or just a few hours away from your smart phone?

Strategic Planning Committee Wants Your Input

As the strategic planning committee continues to meet this fall to talk about the future, we will be seeking the input of the congregation. We are working on a survey that will be sent out to the membership but in the meantime, help us begin to think about the future. Please begin to reflect upon questions like: What would you like to see Woodmont do in the future in terms of ministry and outreach? What current ministry areas need to be expanded? What are the facility limitations at our church? Since South Hall seems to be maxed out in terms of the outreach ministries that it houses, what should our plan be? Be looking for a survey that will be sent out in the coming weeks. This group values the input of everybody in the congregation and we want to hear from as many people as possible. Blessings,

Turn, Turn, Turn by Thom Schuyler, Director of College & Young Adults
Our granddaughter started preschool at Woodmont last month. On her first day Lulah's mother did something worth sharing: she took a picture. For many it will simply be a photo of a little girl on her first day of school. For others it may have a more profound meaning. Here is the picture:

Tom Mathias was a hero of mine. Tom was my hero because he knew how to do things. Tom was my hero because he was humble. Tom was my hero because he treated people with respect. Tom was my hero because "he served the Lord with gladness." In this photograph Lulah is sitting on a sturdy concrete bench that the Woodmont Christian Preschool had constructed in his memory. Someone had the intuition to place her on this bench to etch a lasting memory. Amen! Some day in the not-so-distant future our granddaughter will see this picture. Whenever it is, I hope that Lulah peers beyond her own image and sees the words carved in the stone that is supporting her. Go and do the same, little darling All the love, Dutch

His ministry project is called Tele-Connect. Tele-Connect involves the coordination of a group of volunteers who provide regular connection or care, usually via a friendly voice over the telephone, to church members who are shut-in, convalescing, grieving, lonely, depressed, temporarily immobilized, etc. This is a special group of volunteers who are caring, committed Christians and are good listeners, with warm understanding hearts. Planning meetings will be scheduled soon in the fall. Join the CWF for October's program and to learn more about Tele-Connect. Lunch will follow the meeting. Reservations may be made through your Circle or by calling the church office (297-8563) by noon on this Friday, September 27th. **CWF Board will meet at 10:00 a.m. in Room 107**

News from the Property Committee

A project to seal and re-stripe the Church parking lot is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 14th. The process will take approximately a week to complete and possibly longer if the weather doesn't cooperate. While access to the Church and South Hall will always be available, normal traffic patterns will change and entrances will be closed at various times during the project. Please respect any traffic barriers you encounter. There will be signage directing you to an open entrance. There should be no planned overnight parking during this time. We apologize in advance for any inconveniences. Unfortunately, there is never a good time to work a project like this at such a wonderfully active Church.

If life is getting you down and you need a Christian friend to listen, that is just what Stephen Ministers are trained to do. Please call Kathy Patten (838-4957) to discuss the possibility of this being the help you need.

Sponsor Spotlight
We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youth sponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12th grade youth in our church. This week, please take some extra time to celebrate and get to know Rob Cochran. Rob and his wife, Ellen, have been members of Woodmont since they were knee high to a tadpole. Rob and Ellen have two daughters, Lindsey an archeologist in Florida and Rachel a graphic artist in New York City, and a son, Taylor, who is a man about town in Chicago. As an architect and general contractor, Rob draws pictures of buildings and then tries to make the buildings look like the pictures. We all pretty much have a bunch of fun. Amen.

The Bridge service offers snacks and coffee for their 15 minute social time prior to the beginning of each service. We are in need of goodies, homemade or not. The favorites are cookies, sweet breads, brownies, doughnuts, chips, salsas, crackers, dips, pretzels and nuts, although don't limit your talents to this list!
