From the Directors Desk

Since our previous catalog was issued, the almost unthinkable happened: a pontiff has renounced the throne of Saint Peter. We wish Pope Benedict XVI, one of our most well-known authors, great happiness in his new way of life. We welcome Pope Francis, at the beginning of his pontificate. Ad multos annos! The CUA Press, too, has undergone change. Our longtime marketing manager Beth Benevides has moved on to work for a foundation that, among other things, helps support children with special needs. We are sorry to see her go, but are proud that she works for such a worthy cause. We welcome our new marketing manager Brian Roach, who comes to CUA Press having worked in the marketing departments of John Wiley and Oxford University Press. Beth and Brian have both helped the Press this year to move more squarely into the realm of electronic publishing, enabling more people to purchase and read our books in electronic format, if they chose to do so. In this catalog, there is evidence of further change. We are delighted to announce that CUA Press will be distributing the titles of Sapientia Press, the publishing division of Ave Maria University. Sapientias publishing interests and those of CUA Press are closely aligned. Included in their publications are the books The Magisterium by the late Avery, Cardinal Dulles, Alice von Hildebrands The Privilege of Being a Woman and the novel The Tiber Was Silver by Michael Novak, which tells the story of a young man contemplating the call to religious life. We encourage you to look over their listing in this catalog to discover books of theirs of which you may not previously have been aware. We are also taking on the distribution of the Bulletin of Medieval Canon Law. The Bulletin has long been regarded as essential reading for those interested in medieval canon law, and should have broad appeal among those interested more generally in medieval history. We look forward to making this journal, which is about to publish its thirtieth volume, more widely known and more readily available to subscribers. The Press is delighted to welcome back two returning authors. Richard Regan, whose book Just War was recently published in a new edition, now brings us The American Constitution and Religion, a brief and clear overview of the Supreme Court and the First Amendment that should be compelling reading for all Courtwatchers. Fr James Schall, who has written many books for us including The Mind That Is Catholic, is the author of Political Philosophy and Revelation, an enthralling set of essays that enlighten the reader about the interplay of philosophy and theology. We are grateful they have chosen us once again to be their publisher. These new distributed titles, books and journals, and the presence of returning authors of engaging and informative books call to mind a remark of Blessed John Henry NewmanTo live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often. We dare to hope that the Press is, however slowly, edging towards perfection. Trevor Lipscombe

The American Constitution and Religion

Richard J. Regan
The Supreme Courts decisions concerning the first amendment are hotly debated, and the controversy shows no signs of abating as additional cases come before the court. Adding much-needed historical and philosophical background to the discussion, Richard J. Regan reconsiders some of the most important Supreme Court cases regarding the establishment clause and the free exercise of religion. Governmental aid to church-affiliated elementary schools and colleges; state-sponsored prayer and Bible reading; curriculum that includes creationism; tax exemption of church property; publicly sponsored Christmas displaysthese and other notable cases are discussed in Regans chapters on the religious establishment clause. On the topic of the free-exercise clause, Regan considers such subjects as the value of religious freedom, as well as the place of religious beliefs in public schooling and government affairs. Important cases concerning conscientious objection to war, regulation of religious organizations and personnel, and western traditions of conscience are also examined. This book, written for students of law, political science, and religion, presents the relevant case law in chronological order. The addition of the historical context and Regans philosophical discussion enhances our understanding of these influential cases.

Political Philosophy and Revelation

A Catholic Reading
James V. Schall, SJ
A collection of Fr. James Schalls recent essays, Political Philosophy and Revelation offers a learned, erudite, and coherent statement on the relationship between reason and revelation in the modern world. It addresses political philosophy in the context of an awareness of other humane and practical sciences, including history, literature, economics, theology, ethics and metaphysics. Today, revelation and reason are often thought to be in opposition to each other. This book looks at arguments and evidence for a more consistent reading of our experience and thought, one that would include the revelational contributions and the philosophy and politics it inspires. This is done in accord with the Catholic understanding of freedom and reason. To see these connections, Schall looks to the readings of Plato to illustrate how revelation addresses itself to reason. Political Philosophy and Revelation will prove to be an indispensable guide to the thinking and writing of Fr. Schall in the second decade of the twenty first century.

Divided Friends
Portraits of the Roman Catholic Modernist Crisis in the United States
William L. Portier
On September 8, 1907, Pope St. Pius X brought the simmering Roman Catholic Modernist crisis to a boil with his encyclical Pascendi dominici gregis. In Pascendis terms, recent biblical, historical, scientific, and philosophical attempts to take seriously subjective mediations of Gods revelation led only to subjectivism and agnosticism. Pius X condemned these as Modernism and the synthesis of all heresies. This Modernism threatened the very human capacity to know and believe in God as a reality apart from human consciousness. Prior to 1907 no Catholic thinkers had used the term Modernism to designate the theological or biblical work they were doing. Pascendi, with its provisions for diocesan vigilance committees and censorship of books, combined with the subsequent Oath against Modernism (1910), created a climate of suspicion and fear. In two sets of intertwined biographical portraits, spanning two generations, Divided Friends dramatizes the theological issues of the modernist crisis, highlighting their personal dimensions and extensively reinterpreting their long-range effects. The four protagonists are Bishop Denis J. OConnell, Josephite founder John R. Slattery, together with the Paulists William L. Sullivan and Joseph McSorley. Their lives span the decades from the Americanist crisis of the 1890s right up to the eve of Vatican II. In each set, one leaves the church and one stays. The two who leave come to see their former companions as fundamentally dishonest. Divided Friends entails a reinterpretation of the intellectual fallout from the modernist crisis and a reframing of the 20th century debate about Catholic intellectual life.

Dark Passages of the Bible

Engaging Scripture with Benedict XVI and St. Thomas Aquinas
Matthew J. Ramage
Multiple gods? Divinely mandated genocide? Rejection of an afterlife? If the Scriptures are the inspired and inerrant word of God that Christians claim them to be, how can they contain these things? For many believers in the modern age, traditional Christian answers to these challenges are no longer convincing. Though spiritually edifying, they are unable to account for the sheer scope and depth of problems raised through the advent of historical-critical scholarship. Following the lead of Pope Benedict XVI, in Dark Passages of the Bible Matthew Ramage weds the historical-critical approach with a theological reading of Scripture based in the patristic-medieval tradition. Whereas these two approaches are often viewed as mutually exclusive or even contradictory, Ramage insists that the two are mutually enriching and necessary for doing justice to the Bibles most challenging texts. Ramage applies Benedict XVIs hermeneutical principles to three of the most theologically problematic areas of the Bible: its treatment of Gods nature, the nature of good and evil, and the afterlife. Teasing out key hermeneutical principles from the work of Thomas Aquinas, Ramage analyzes each of these themes with an eye to reconciling texts whose presence would seem to violate the doctrines of biblical inspiration and inerrancy. At the same time, Ramage directly addresses the problems of concrete biblical texts in light of both patristic and modern exegetical methods.

Uniquely weds historical-critical analysis with a theological reading of Scripture and insists that the two elements are mutually enriching
Unlike many other books, Dark Passages of the Bible does not limit itself merely to describing and applying abstract theories or doctrines of inspiration or inerrancy to difficult passages in Scripture. Rather, it reconciles actual biblical passages or themes that seem to contradict or be incompatible with doctrines of biblical inspiration and inerrancy ... A significant contribution to explaining Pope Benedict XVIs interpretive approach, which reconciles the best of pre-critical and post-critical exegesis.William S. Kurz, SJ, professor of theology, Marquette University

Learning Christ
Ignatius of Antioch and the Mystery of Redemption
Gregory Vall
For centuries Ignatius of Antioch has been underestimated by his admirers and vilified by his critics. Scholars tend to view him as either a careless epistolographer and lesser theologian, or a manipulative ecclesiastical politician seeking to gain sympathy for himself and support for his agenda. Critics feel that he departed dangerously from the pure Pauline gospel of justification by faith and veered off into early Catholicism, if not gnosticism. Learning Christ represents a thorough reevaluation of Ignatius as author and theologian, demonstrating that his seven authentic letters present a sophisticated and cohesive vision of the economy of redemption. Gregory Vall argues that Ignatiuss thought represents a vital synthesis of Pauline, Johannine, and Matthean perspectives while anticipating important elements of later patristic theology. Topics treated in this volume include Ignatiuss soteriological anthropology, his Christology and nascent Trinitarianism, his nuanced understanding of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, and his ecclesiology and eschatology. Methodologically, Learning Christ can be situated among recent attempts to recover a genuinely theological approach to early Christian texts within the perspective opened by modern historical-critical research. It aims to interpret Ignatiuss thought in a manner that is authentically rooted in the communicative intention embodied in the text of his letters, while avoiding the historicist reduction of their significance to its hypothetically reconstituted contextual meaning. Vall argues that we can learn a great deal from Ignatius both about the content of revealed truth and about how to do theology.

Joseph C. Atkinson

Biblical and Theological Foundations of the Family

The Domestic Church
Joseph C. Atkinson
Biblical and Theological Foundations of the Family argues that the family has a constitutive nature and a specific theological purpose, which God reveals in the church. Joseph Atkinson investigates the principles of the doctrine of Creation which inform the family from the beginning; the vital way the family functions as carrier of the covenant in the Old Testament; and the critical aspects of Hebraic anthropology, especially corporate personality, upon which the family is based. This book provides a counter argument to the view of the human person developed in modern thought and which prevails todaythe autonomous, self-determining individual, with no essential nature or social or ecclesial aspects. Atkinson discusses the constitutive corporate nature of the human person and how the covenantal family of the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The author does so by investigating how baptism transforms the family and gives it an ecclesial identity, making it a domestic church. He then examines the development of the familys ecclesial nature in the church fathers, and the providential re-appropriation of the familys inner ecclesial identity in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and in subsequent magisterial teachings. This ground-breaking work establishes a solid biblical and theological foundation on which a theology of the family can be constructed. It thus fills a critical lack in the current literature on the family. The wide range of sources, including Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant, give this work a genuine ecumenical dimension. Biblical and Theological Foundations of the Family will become indispensable for anyone wanting to engage in serious study of the structure and meaning of the family and its place in the salvific will of God.

Fathers of the Church

Festal Letters, 1330

St. Cyril of Alexandria
Translated by Philip R. Amidon and John J. OKeefe
Fathers of the Church Series, Volume 127
St. Cyril of Alexandria is best known for his role in the Christological controversies of the fifth century. In recent decades, scholars have been attending more carefully to his exegetical legacy. Most of Cyrils work takes the form of biblical commentary rather than doctrinal treatise. Indeed, during his long career he wrote commentaries on nearly every book of the Bible. Less attention, however, has been given to Cyrils pastoral work as the Patriarch of Alexandria, perhaps because his commentaries and doctrinal treatises do not reveal much about his daily pastoral duties. Here the Festal Letters are especially helpful. Twenty-nine in all, these letters cover all but three of Cyrils years as a bishop. The first twelve were published in 2009 (Fathers of the Church 118). The present volume completes the set. Festal letters were used in Alexandria primarily to announce the beginning of Lent and the date of Easter. They also served a catechetical purpose, however, allowing the Patriarch an annual opportunity to write pastorally not just about issues facing the entire see, but also about the theological issues of the day. Thus, in these letters we catch a glimpse of Cyril the pastor writing about complex theology in an uncomplicated way. These letters also illuminate other realities of the ancient church in Alexandria, especially the relationship with the Jewish community and the rising influence of asceticism.

Aquinas and the Cry of Rachel

Thomistic Reflections on the Problem of Evil
John F. X. Knasas
In Aquinas and the Cry of Rachel, John F. X. Knasas explores Thomas Aquinass philosophical thinking about evil, and brings the results into discussion with the contemporary theodiciesphilosophies of the problem of evil. It examines the relation of the human person and human nature to nature as a whole. Generally speaking, possible philosophical accounts for evil are two kinds: cosmological or personal. The cosmological account has evils rebounding to the perfection of creation. The personal account would have evils suffered rebounding to the good of the sufferer. Knasas argues that for Aquinas no philosophical resolution of these two kinds of accounts is possible. This argument is based upon Aquinass understanding of the human as an intellector of analogical being. Such an understanding establishes two truths. First, the human is by nature only a principal part of the created whole. Second, there is the philosophically discernible possibility of supernatural elevation by the creator. Hence, as far as philosophy can discern, evil may have a natural explanation or it may have a supernatural one. The Thomistic philosopher has no answer as to why evil exists because that philosopher discerns too many possible ones. In that respect, Aquinass thinking on evil is similar to his thinking about the philosophical knowledge of the biblical truth of the worlds creation in time. Such a creation is one metaphysical possibility among others. Some authors that Aquinas and the Cry of Rachel considers are: Anthony Flew and Albert Camus, Jacques Maritain and Charles Journet, William Rowe, Marily McCord Adams, William Hasker, John Hick, David Ray Griffin, David Hume, Diogenes Allen, J. L. Mackie, Alvin Plantinga, Richard Swinburne, Bruce Reichenbach, Brian Davies, and Eleonore Stump.

Human Action in Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham
Thomas M. Osborne Jr.
This book sets out a thematic presentation of human action, especially as it relates to morality, in the three most significant figures in Medieval Scholastic thought: Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham. Thomas, along with his teacher Albert the Great, was instrumental in the medieval reception of the action theory of Aristotles Nicomachean Ethics. Scotus and Ockham were part of a later Franciscan theological tradition. Thomas, Scotus, and Ockham worked in the context of a new moral theology that focused on the description and evaluation of human acts. Organized thematically, discussing the causes of human action, the role of practical reasoning, the stages of action, the specification of moral action, and an acts supernatural and natural worth. Each chapter compares the three main figures on the same set of issues. The book shows that although the different philosophies of action cannot be explained in terms of any one major difference or principle, there are some common themes that deserve attention. The most notable themes are 1) a developing separation between nature and the will, 2) an increased emphasis on the wills activity, and 3) a changing view of mental causation. The book is important for those who are interested in medieval philosophy, the philosophy of action, and the intellectual background to Reformation and early modern thought.

Action and Character According to Aristotle

Aristotle
The Logic of the Moral Life

according to

Proposes comprehensive interpretations of some difficult passages in Aristotles two major ethical works
A wonderful book, brimming with fresh insights, both of a broad philosophical nature, about main themes in Aristotles ethics, and of a philological character ... It makes significant contributions to ethics, action theory and moral philosophy, while also making distinctive contributions to Aristotelian scholarship. Michael Pakaluk, professor of philosophy and chair, Ava Maria University

Aristotle labors under no illusion that in the practical sphere humans operate according to the canons of logic. This does not prevent him, however, from bringing his own logical acumen to his study of human behavior. Aristotle, according to Fr. Flannery, depicts the way in which human acts of various sorts and in various combinations determine the logical structure of moral character. Some moral charactersor character typesmanage to incorporate a high degree of practical consistency; others incorporate less, without forfeiting their basic orientation towards the good. Still others approach utter inconsistency or moral deprivation, although even these, in so far as they are responsible for their actions, retain a core element of rationality in their souls. According to Aristotle, moral character depends ultimately upon the structure of individual acts and upon how they fit together into a whole that is consistentor not consistentwith justice and friendship. This book will appeal to professional scholars and graduate students with an interest in Aristotles ethics and in ethics generally. It proposes comprehensive interpretations of some difficult passages in Aristotles two major ethical works (the Nicomachean Ethics and the Eudemian Ethics). It brings to bear upon the analysis of human behavior passages in Aristotles logical works and in his Physics. It also draws connections among areas of particular interest to contemporary ethics: action theory, the analysis of practical reason, and virtue ethics.

The Philosophical Life

Biography and the Crafting of Intellectual Identity in Late Antiquity
Arthur P. Urbano
Patristics Monograph Series
Ancient biographies were more than accounts of the deeds of past heroes and guides for moral living. They were also arenas for debating pressing philosophical questions and establishing intellectual credentials, as Arthur P. Urbano argues in this study of biographies composed in Late Antiquity. With its origins in the competing philosophical schools of Hellenistic Greece, the genre of the philosophical life provided verbal portraits of paradigmatic figuresusually rulers and philosophersthat epitomized diverse approaches to knowledge, piety, and the virtuous life. An eruption of biographical literature in Late Antiquity attests to a similar, but more intense, struggle to influence the future directions of religion, education, politics, and morality in the Roman Empire as leaders of Neoplatonism and Christianity engaged one another through historical figures. In a close analysis of the texts and the circumstances surrounding their composition, he argues that the production of biographies was a standard competitive practice among Greek educated intellectuals. Christian thinkers who wrote biographies, for the most part bishops, simultaneously drew upon the literary and philosophical education they shared with their rivals and challenged it. Proposing alternate histories and new paradigms of philosophy, including ascetics and women, they came to terms with the past and aimed to shape a new Christian future. Urbano traces the transformation of the late Roman empire through the lens of biographies which debated such issues as proper worship, access to God, politics, ethnicity, gender, and philosophic pedigree. He covers the writings of several Christian and Neoplatonist authors between the 3rd and 5th centuries to demonstrate how biographical literature played a significant role in the transformation of Rome into a Christian empire.

Language and Human Understanding

The Roots of Creativity in Speech and Thought

David Braine

David Braine
Human speech and writing reveal our powers both to generalize and to criticize our own procedures. For this we must use words non-mechanically and with a freedom without definite limits, but still allowing mutual intelligibility. Such powers cannot be simulated by any possible physical mechanism, and this shows that human beings in our acts of judgment and understanding transcend the body. Philosopher, psychologist and linguist are all concerned with natural language. Accordingly, in seeking a unified view, Braine draws on insights from all these fields, sifting through the discordant schools of linguists. He concludes that one extended logic or integrated semantic syntax shapes grammar, but without constricting languages to being of one grammatical type. Language as learnt and speech are both essentially public, geared to a community of language-users. Therefore, psycholinguists should imitate Gibsons treatment of our perceptual system and treat learning and use of language as arising by adaptation to our social and natural environment. Through taking the malleability of the functioning of the brain and its parts to an extreme, grammar has become unrestricted by neurology, limited only by logical and pragmatic constraints. For Braine, a language is a living thing, both in the development of thought and in conversation. Chomsky has entrenched a static, building-block, model of a language as a code, each lexical item with just one meaning. Yet in our learning and use of language each word develops an indefinite spread of uses or senses adapted to the realities and questions which we have to confront. The idea one lexical item, one meaning applies only to formal languages, not to the natural language which extends beyond social life to embrace mathematics, physics and all the sciences, religion and literature. In rewriting the philosophy of grammar, Braine restores the dynamic conception of language, reuniting structure and communicative function. Grammar, typically through the verb, gives the sentence its saying function, the verb being what brings the sentence to life, giving the sentences other elements their role and force.

Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Canon Law
This book presents the first full-scale study of the Tractatus de penitentia (C.33 q.3) in Gratians Decretum, which became the textbook for canon law and served as the basis of the churchs developing jurisprudence, in theory and in practice. The treatise on penance stands out as a distinct, overtly theological section of Gratians work and was long suspected of being a later addition to the Decretum. As a result, the treatise has not received thorough treatment and has often not been included in scholars general discussions of Gratians work, its nature, and its purpose. Manuscript discoveries in the 1990s proved the treatise to be authentic and to be part of Gratians early drafting of his text. This study examines the treatise in its entirety, providing a commentary on the content of the treatise (which extends beyond questions of penance) and an examination of its relationship to the early twelfth-century schools, positing above all a connection to the school of Anselm of Laon. The study also re-examines the question of the nature and purpose of Gratians Decretum in light of the original inclusion of De penitentia and of Gratians role as a teacher, or master. The second half of the book traces the influence of De penitentia in the second half of the twelfth century and through the pontificate of Innocent, culminating in the Fourth Lateran Council (1215). That period was crucial for the development of systematic theology and ecclesiastical jurisprudence. Nevertheless, the period was also one in which boundaries between academic fields were far from solidified, which the treatment of De penitentia by various intellectuals demonstrates. The period witnessed as well the development of new kinds of penitential literature and an increase of business at the papal curia. Gratians De penitentia exercised influence in both realms. In brief, Gratians De penitentia constituted the fundamental text on penance in the period.

The first full-scale study on Gratians Tractatus de penitentia

This substantial, monographic treatment of Gratians treatise De penitentia comes at a propitious moment.... Dr. Larsons careful, welldocumented, and rigorously critical sifting of the evidence ... provides an invaluable basis for further scholarly investigations and arguments. There is nothing comparable published in any language.Joseph W. Goering, professor of history, University of Toronto

Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini

EUROPE
( c. 14 0 0 14 58 )

Europe (c. 14001458)

Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini
Translated by Robert Brown Introduced and annotated by Nancy Bisaha
Shortly before his election in 1458 as Pope Pius II, Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini produced a history of recent events in Europe. Europe (c. 1400 1458) provides students and scholars alike with a rich array of famous and lesser known figures and events spanning from Scandinavia to Italy and Iberia, and from Scotland to Lithuania and Greece. Aeneas focused on the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, who began his rule in 1440, creating a frame narrow enough to allow the author to move with ease across the continent. Despite this stated focus, Aeneas makes frequent digressions into ancient and medieval history, revealing his sense of how the deeper past affected the present character of cities and regions. Among the people and events Aeneas addresses are the rivalries of German princes, struggles between Eastern Europeans and the Ottoman Turks, including the fall of Constantinople (1453), challenges to the powerful Teutonic Order, the last battles of the Hundred Years War, dynastic wrangling in Spain, the post-schism papacys efforts to reclaim its former dominance, and a lengthy discussion of recent politics and wars in Italy, culminating in the campaigns of Alfonso of Naples. Amidst his descriptions of powerful men, Aeneas also frequently pauses to discuss notable women, customs of the peasantry, religious beliefs of heretics and pagans, and economic issues. This popular text circulated widely in manuscript form and was printed in several editions between the late 15th and the early 18th centuries, in Latin, German, and Italian. The present volume represents the first time this work has been translated into English, bringing its colorful narrative to the attention of a wider audience. This edition also provides extensive footnotes, an appendix of rulers, and a lengthy introduction to Aeneass life and the context and relevance of this work.

New Studies in the Syriac Book of Steps
Edited by Kristian S. Heal and Robert A. Kitchen
CUA Studies in Early Christianity
Among the earliest writings in Syriac literature is the collection of 30 mmr or discourses entitled the Book of Steps or Liber Graduum, mostly probably written in the late fourth century inside the Persian Empire (modern Iraq). The author, who deliberately withheld his name, wrote extensively on the spiritual life and exploits of two groups of committed Christiansthe upright and the perfectthat flourished in a period prior to the development of monasticism. Deeply immersed in the exegesis of the Bible as a means of defining and guiding an ascetical lifestyle, the author defends celibacy, absolute poverty, the vocations of prayer, teaching and conflict resolution, as well as insisting that the perfect should not work. In an unparalleled manner for ascetical literature, by the end of the collection the author encourages the predominantly lay upright group to keep striving for the status of perfection as he is disappointed in the failings of the senior group he calls the perfect. This collection of sixteen new critical essays offers fresh persepectives on the Book of Steps, adding greater detail and depth to our understanding of the works intriguing picture of early Syriac asceticism as practiced within the life of a local church and community. The contributors offer perspectives on the books historical context in the midst of the Persian-Roman conflicts, the influence of Manichaeism, dietary images, sexuality and marriage, biblical exegesis and the use of Pauline writings and theology, as well as explorations of the Book of Steps distinctive approach to the ascetical life.

The Privilege of Being a Woman

Alice von Hildebrand
Women historically have been denigrated as lower than men or viewed as privileged. Dr. Alice von Hildebrand characterizes the difference between such views as based on whether mans vision is secularistic or steeped in the supernatural. She shows that feminisms attempts to gain equality with men by imitation of men is unnatural, foolish, destructive, and self-defeating. The Blessed Mothers role in the Incarnation points to the true privilege of being a woman. Both virginity and maternity meet in Mary who exhibits the feminine gifts of purity, receptivity to Gods word, and life-giving nurturance at their highest.

Olde Clerkis Speche

WILLIAM A. QUINN

OLDE CLERKIS SPECHE

CHAUCERS TROILUS AND CRISEYDE & THE IMPLICATIONS OF AUTHORIAL RECITAL

Chaucers Troilus and Criseyde and the Implications of Authorial Recital

William A. Quinn
Olde Clerkis Speche affirms both the historical legitimacy and the interpretive benefits of reading Troilus and Criseyde as if the text were initially composed for Chaucers own recital before a familiar audience. Proposing a qualification rather than contradiction of the persona as a reading premise, Quinn revitalizes the interpretive context of Chaucers original performance milieu. The central five chapters offer a close hearing of the possible tonal strategies of each book of Troilus and Criseyde during actual recital. Particular attention is given to expressions now normally overlooked, phrasing that does not advance the modern readers appreciation of plot or character development or theme; such filler did, however, once offer Chaucers own reader response (or ennaratio) during the recital event. These five chapters simultaneously evaluate the probability that Chaucer himself revised each recital installment for subsequent manuscript circulation. All together, these chapters provide a sustained case study of the interplay between the authors anticipations of recital presence and textual absence. Although this study does not pretend to detail an inaugural staging of Troilus and Criseyde, it does attend to the histrionic potential of Chaucers own speche/ In poetrie (T&C V. 18545). The final chapter discusses how such a recital premise impacts several current controversies among Chaucerians, including the dating of Chaucers individual acts of composition, the underlying assumptions regarding the publication of each text, the editorial imposition of punctuation on the manuscript record, and the poets increasing anxiety regarding his future absence from the reading event. Olde Clerkis Speche will be of interest to all readers of Chaucer as well as everyone interested in performance theory and the history of reading.

A distinctively innovative study of the possible ways in which Troilus and Criseyde may have been read aloud or performed by Chaucer in his lifetime

William Quinn is professor of english at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He is the author of Chuacers Rehersynges: The Performability of the Legend of Good Women, also available from CUA Press.

Mary Magdalene and Her Sister Martha

An Edition and Translation of the Medieval Welsh Lives
Jane Cartwright

Jane Cartwright

an edition and translation of the medieval welsh lives

Mary Magdalene and Her Sister Martha: An Edition and Translation of the Medieval Welsh Lives provides scholarly editions and English translations of the medieval Welsh versions of the legends of Mary Magdalene and Martha. Described by Victor Saxer as medieval best sellers, these hagiographical tales, which described how Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha survived a perilous sea voyage from the holy land and evangelized Provence, were available in many different Latin and vernacular versions and circulated widely in the medieval West. The texts were translated or adapted into Middle Welsh some time before the mid-fourteenth century: the Middle Welsh Life of Mary Magdalene is extant in thirteen manuscripts and the Middle Welsh Life of Martha is preserved in eight of the same manuscripts. Jane Cartwright makes the Middle Welsh versions available to an international audience for the first time and provides a detailed study of the Welsh manuscripts that contain the texts, a comparison between the different manuscripts versions and a discussion of the wider hagiographical context of the texts in Wales. The volume includes transcriptions, editions and translations of the two Lives based on the oldest most complete extant versions found in the Red Book of Talgarth c. 1400, as well as an additional section of text describing Mary Magdalenes life before Christs crucifixion from the fifteenth-century Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales, Peniarth MS 27ii. The edition is accompanied by a comprehensive glossary which provides translations of all medieval Welsh words that occur in the texts, an analysis of the development and transmission of the legends, as well as a discussion of the relevance and popularity of these two female saints in late medieval Wales: medieval Welsh poetry, church dedications, and holy wells are also considered.

Philosophy

Aquinas and Maritain on Evil

Mystery and Metaphysics
Edited by James G. Hanink
AMERICAN MARITAIN ASSOCIATION PUBLICATIONS
While creatively drawing on St.Thomas Aquinas, Jacques Maritain made the problem of evil a life-long philosophical inquiry. Indeed, Maritain tells us in his God and the Permission of Evil (1966) that If philosophers lived up to their calling in the new age into which we have entered, the crucial work for them would be to renew the theory of evil ... by examining it more profoundly. Exploring the problem of evil, indeed, its profound mystery, comes near the heart of the Christian philosophers vocation to seek a fuller understanding of the faith. To join in that endeavor, is to struggle within a constricting web of near paradoxes. That struggle will soon enough put us in mind of Job. With Job we will come to reflect on Gods providence and the folly of conventional wisdom. The contributors to this volume offer reflections that probe the experience of both good and evil and try to understand something of their nature. In doing so they search out the origin of the evil that we ourselves bring about and from which we all suffer. Contributors to the volume are John Conley, SJ, Bryan R. Cross, Laura L. Garcia, Andrew Jaspers, John F. X. Knasas, Eric Manchester, John F. Morris, Siobahn Nash-Marshall, Bernadette E. OConnor, Jonathan J. Sanford, James V. Schall, SJ, Denis A. Philosophy

Human Nature, Contemplation, and the Political Order

Essays Inspired by Jacques Maritains Scholasticism and Politics
Edited by Peter Karl Koritansky
AMERICAN MARITAIN ASSOCIATION PUBLICATIONS
In his 1940 publication, Scholasticism and Politics, Jacques Maritain asserts that the modern world has sought good things in bad ways; it has thus compromised the search for authentic human values, which men must save now by an intellectual grasp of a profounder truth, by a substantial recasting of humanism. In the essays that follow, Maritain explores the cultural and philosophical dimensions of this claim and sketches an outline for addressing what he famously calls the crisis of modern times. The answer is a new humanism that appropriates the important insights of modern thought, but which is also grounded in the classical tradition that reaches its full philosophical development in the thought of Thomas Aquinas. It is a humanism that acknowledges the dignity of both mans body and his soul, and which does not close his soul off to the transcendent. The authors of Human Nature, Contemplation, and the Political Order: Essays Inspired by Jacques Maritains Scholasticism and Politics carry Maritains philosophical and cultural insights into the twenty-first century. They do so by exploring Maritains understanding of the human soul with particular emphasis upon Maritains extremely thoughtful critique of Freud. Others investigate the moral and political dimension of Maritains thought by bringing him into dialogue with modern figures as diverse as Niccol Machiavelli, Elizabeth Anscombe, and Pope Benedict XVI. Still others develop the modern significance of and connection between Maritains humanism and the Thomistic identification of human happiness with contemplation.

THOMAS MORE

Curtright overturns forty years of attack on Mores reputation. The One Thomas More is a much-needed work of daring.First Things Travis Curtright has now added to the luster of the real Mores legacy with his excellent new book The One Thomas More.... as a resource on Thomas More, its invaluable.Archbishop Charles J. Chaput for Public Discourse Travis Curtright sets the record straight that there is just one [More,] unified by a belief that faith and reason work togetherand that both are bound together in a common social framework rooted in proper authority. St. Thomas More remains an example for Catholics who wish to be good citizens and people of faith. Curtright ably explains that the resources in Mores work are still available to contemporary Catholics. National Catholic Register The One Thomas More is a convincing reappraisal of Thomas Mores life and writings, coming after decades of contradictory critiques. Also of importance are Curtrights insights into aspects of More that have so far remained marginal in scholarship, such as More the moralist or More the philosopher, which here complete a portrait of the sixteenth century statesman, author and polemicist, in a particularly comprehensive study.Marie-Claire Phlippeau, Editor of Moreana This book presents a lucid, intelligent, and well-written account of Thomas More by exploring a crucial unifying principle that animates his thinking and writings. Curtrights argument, impressively grounded in literature, philosophy, history, and theology, presents compelling evidence to counter the biological narratives of two Thomas Mores. In this context, More emerges as a consistent and thoughtful writer and not the caricature often put forth by modern-day detractors. The One Thomas More allows for a more balanced, nuanced, and compelling understanding of this fascinating figure.Paul J. Voss, Associate Professor of English, Georgia State University

The Early Heidegger and Medieval Philosophy

Phenomenology for the Godforsaken
S. J. McGrath
McGraths book is an impressive study of Heideggers philosophy, which sheds light on almost all aspects of the early Heidegger and undoubtedly the book is an important contribution to the understanding of the relationship between Heideggers philosophy and theology. The Medieval Review [An] insightful new study. . . . It is no simple task to explicate Heideggers philosophyearly, middle, or latein terms that will render it somewhat accessible to readers while also supplying the backdrop to an argument about how that philosophy ought to be evaluated. McGrath succeeds admirably in this regard; his book is one of the most clearly written, lucid treatments of Heidegger to have been published in recent years. The Thomist Over the last fifteen years or so, inquiry into Heidegger has been greatly enriched by studies of Heideggers early development.... McGraths study provides a useful addition to this body of scholarship, extending our understanding of Heideggers relation to medieval theology, while offering a novel critical perspective on the course of this relation. Philosophy in Review McGrath offers a detailed analysis of Heideggers early work as a way of defining his lifelong preoccupations with specific philosophical questions, especially the question concerning the meaning of God and Godforsakenness for understanding the shifts in/of his thinking. . . . McGraths book proves itself to be one of the most insightful studies done on the early Heidegger before 1923. It offers a consistently reliable and often insightful account of Heideggers engagement with Carl Braig, Franz Brentano, Duns Scotus, Thomas Aquinas, the medieval mystics, and the Catholic world of Freiburg in the years before WWI. Moreover, McGraths helpful reading of Luther and of Luthers influence on Heidegger. . . . Offers a model of hermeneutic care and rigor. American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly

It combines valuable historical information with deep theological insights by presenting the development of papal primacy in the two millennia of Church history in close connection with collegiality and the Eucharist. A scholarly work with particular importance for the discussion of one of the most crucial issues in ecclesiology and ecumenism. It is warmly recommended for study by all those interested in the promotion of Christian unity.Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) of Pergamon

David Fagerbergs contribution is creative and original. He presents an able and accessible summary of the Orthodox ascetical traditionvaluable in its own rightand combines it with creative insight to bring this tradition to bear on how we conceive our own participation in the liturgy and what effect this has on our understanding of theology. Living the Good Life

A Beginners Thomistic Ethics
Steven J. Jensen
Living the Good Life presents a brief introduction to virtue and vice, self-control and weakness, misery and happiness. The book contrasts the thought of Aquinas with popular views, such as moral relativism, values clarification, utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, and situation ethics. Intended as a text for students, beginners of philosophy will gain access to a key aspect of Aquinass thought, namely, that true happiness is realized not in the animal life of passion and greed but only in the reasonable pursuit of human goods, in which we find true peace and rest from the distractions of this world.

The Primacy of Persons in Politics

Empiricism and Political Philosophy
Edited by John von Heyking and Thomas Heilke
A valuable collection of scholarly essays assembled to explore Tilo Schabert's personalist philosophy. The problem of movement and form is revealed in the study of political persons who create their own power and try, despite restraining institutions, to keep it alive and fluid. The essays bring philosophy to political science and sociology, and they share the subtlety and depth of the man they honor.Harvey C. Mansfield, Professor of Government, Harvard University, and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University.
