Divided Friends
Portraits of the Roman Catholic Modernist Crisis in the United States
William L. Portier
On September 8, 1907, Pope St. Pius X brought the simmering Roman Catholic Modernist crisis to a boil with his encyclical Pascendi dominici gregis. In Pascendis terms, recent biblical, historical, scientific, and philosophical attempts to take seriously subjective mediations of Gods revelation led only to subjectivism and agnosticism. Pius X condemned these as Modernism and the synthesis of all heresies. This Modernism threatened the very human capacity to know and believe in God as a reality apart from human consciousness. Prior to 1907 no Catholic thinkers had used the term Modernism to designate the theological or biblical work they were doing. Pascendi, with its provisions for diocesan vigilance committees and censorship of books, combined with the subsequent Oath against Modernism (1910), created a climate of suspicion and fear. In two sets of intertwined biographical portraits, spanning two generations, Divided Friends dramatizes the theological issues of the modernist crisis, highlighting their personal dimensions and extensively reinterpreting their long-range effects. The four protagonists are Bishop Denis J. OConnell, Josephite founder John R. Slattery, together with the Paulists William L. Sullivan and Joseph McSorley. Their lives span the decades from the Americanist crisis of the 1890s right up to the eve of Vatican II. In each set, one leaves the church and one stays. The two who leave come to see their former companions as fundamentally dishonest. Divided Friends entails a reinterpretation of the intellectual fallout from the modernist crisis and a reframing of the 20th century debate about Catholic intellectual life.

Two sets of biographical portraits highlight the theological issues of the Modernist crisis in the 20th Century
A splendid study. Portier has unearthed a wealth of new material which he interprets brilliantly. His account of how the Modernist crisis affected four significant individuals combines historical sensitivity, theological insight, and deepbut not uncriticalsympathy. In analyzing the dilemmas they faced, he illuminates the situation of American Catholicism in that era and at the same time suggests new lines of inquiry for the future.Phillip Gleason, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Notre Dame

Learning Christ
Ignatius of Antioch and the Mystery of Redemption
Gregory Vall
For centuries Ignatius of Antioch has been underestimated by his admirers and vilified by his critics. Scholars tend to view him as either a careless epistolographer and lesser theologian, or a manipulative ecclesiastical politician seeking to gain sympathy for himself and support for his agenda. Critics feel that he departed dangerously from the pure Pauline gospel of justification by faith and veered off into early Catholicism, if not gnosticism. Learning Christ represents a thorough reevaluation of Ignatius as author and theologian, demonstrating that his seven authentic letters present a sophisticated and cohesive vision of the economy of redemption. Gregory Vall argues that Ignatiuss thought represents a vital synthesis of Pauline, Johannine, and Matthean perspectives while anticipating important elements of later patristic theology. Topics treated in this volume include Ignatiuss soteriological anthropology, his Christology and nascent Trinitarianism, his nuanced understanding of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, and his ecclesiology and eschatology. Methodologically, Learning Christ can be situated among recent attempts to recover a genuinely theological approach to early Christian texts within the perspective opened by modern historical-critical research. It aims to interpret Ignatiuss thought in a manner that is authentically rooted in the communicative intention embodied in the text of his letters, while avoiding the historicist reduction of their significance to its hypothetically reconstituted contextual meaning. Vall argues that we can learn a great deal from Ignatius both about the content of revealed truth and about how to do theology.

Human Action in Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham
Thomas M. Osborne Jr.
This book sets out a thematic presentation of human action, especially as it relates to morality, in the three most significant figures in Medieval Scholastic thought: Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham. Thomas, along with his teacher Albert the Great, was instrumental in the medieval reception of the action theory of Aristotles Nicomachean Ethics. Scotus and Ockham were part of a later Franciscan theological tradition. Thomas, Scotus, and Ockham worked in the context of a new moral theology that focused on the description and evaluation of human acts. Organized thematically, discussing the causes of human action, the role of practical reasoning, the stages of action, the specification of moral action, and an acts supernatural and natural worth. Each chapter compares the three main figures on the same set of issues. The book shows that although the different philosophies of action cannot be explained in terms of any one major difference or principle, there are some common themes that deserve attention. The most notable themes are 1) a developing separation between nature and the will, 2) an increased emphasis on the wills activity, and 3) a changing view of mental causation. The book is important for those who are interested in medieval philosophy, the philosophy of action, and the intellectual background to Reformation and early modern thought.

Proposes comprehensive interpretations of some difficult passages in Aristotles two major ethical works
A wonderful book, brimming with fresh insights, both of a broad philosophical nature, about main themes in Aristotles ethics, and of a philological character ... It makes significant contributions to ethics, action theory and moral philosophy, while also making distinctive contributions to Aristotelian scholarship. Michael Pakaluk, professor of philosophy and chair, Ava Maria University
Aristotle labors under no illusion that in the practical sphere humans operate according to the canons of logic. This does not prevent him, however, from bringing his own logical acumen to his study of human behavior. Aristotle, according to Fr. Flannery, depicts the way in which human acts of various sorts and in various combinations determine the logical structure of moral character. Some moral charactersor character typesmanage to incorporate a high degree of practical consistency; others incorporate less, without forfeiting their basic orientation towards the good. Still others approach utter inconsistency or moral deprivation, although even these, in so far as they are responsible for their actions, retain a core element of rationality in their souls. According to Aristotle, moral character depends ultimately upon the structure of individual acts and upon how they fit together into a whole that is consistentor not consistentwith justice and friendship. This book will appeal to professional scholars and graduate students with an interest in Aristotles ethics and in ethics generally. It proposes comprehensive interpretations of some difficult passages in Aristotles two major ethical works (the Nicomachean Ethics and the Eudemian Ethics). It brings to bear upon the analysis of human behavior passages in Aristotles logical works and in his Physics. It also draws connections among areas of particular interest to contemporary ethics: action theory, the analysis of practical reason, and virtue ethics.

David Braine
David Braine
Human speech and writing reveal our powers both to generalize and to criticize our own procedures. For this we must use words non-mechanically and with a freedom without definite limits, but still allowing mutual intelligibility. Such powers cannot be simulated by any possible physical mechanism, and this shows that human beings in our acts of judgment and understanding transcend the body. Philosopher, psychologist and linguist are all concerned with natural language. Accordingly, in seeking a unified view, Braine draws on insights from all these fields, sifting through the discordant schools of linguists. He concludes that one extended logic or integrated semantic syntax shapes grammar, but without constricting languages to being of one grammatical type. Language as learnt and speech are both essentially public, geared to a community of language-users. Therefore, psycholinguists should imitate Gibsons treatment of our perceptual system and treat learning and use of language as arising by adaptation to our social and natural environment. Through taking the malleability of the functioning of the brain and its parts to an extreme, grammar has become unrestricted by neurology, limited only by logical and pragmatic constraints. For Braine, a language is a living thing, both in the development of thought and in conversation. Chomsky has entrenched a static, building-block, model of a language as a code, each lexical item with just one meaning. Yet in our learning and use of language each word develops an indefinite spread of uses or senses adapted to the realities and questions which we have to confront. The idea one lexical item, one meaning applies only to formal languages, not to the natural language which extends beyond social life to embrace mathematics, physics and all the sciences, religion and literature. In rewriting the philosophy of grammar, Braine restores the dynamic conception of language, reuniting structure and communicative function. Grammar, typically through the verb, gives the sentence its saying function, the verb being what brings the sentence to life, giving the sentences other elements their role and force.
Shows how words bring both content and creativity to our speech and are interwoven in the sentences which express our judgment and understanding
Braine draws masterfully on both contemporary and historical philosophy ... thoroughly researched, comprehensive, and interdisciplinaryNathaniel Goldberg, associate professor of philosophy, Washington and Lee University

Master of Penance
Gratian and the Development of Penitential Thought and Law in the Twelfth Century
Atria A. Larson
Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Canon Law
This book presents the first full-scale study of the Tractatus de penitentia (C.33 q.3) in Gratians Decretum, which became the textbook for canon law and served as the basis of the churchs developing jurisprudence, in theory and in practice. The treatise on penance stands out as a distinct, overtly theological section of Gratians work and was long suspected of being a later addition to the Decretum. As a result, the treatise has not received thorough treatment and has often not been included in scholars general discussions of Gratians work, its nature, and its purpose. Manuscript discoveries in the 1990s proved the treatise to be authentic and to be part of Gratians early drafting of his text. This study examines the treatise in its entirety, providing a commentary on the content of the treatise (which extends beyond questions of penance) and an examination of its relationship to the early twelfth-century schools, positing above all a connection to the school of Anselm of Laon. The study also re-examines the question of the nature and purpose of Gratians Decretum in light of the original inclusion of De penitentia and of Gratians role as a teacher, or master. The second half of the book traces the influence of De penitentia in the second half of the twelfth century and through the pontificate of Innocent, culminating in the Fourth Lateran Council (1215). That period was crucial for the development of systematic theology and ecclesiastical jurisprudence. Nevertheless, the period was also one in which boundaries between academic fields were far from solidified, which the treatment of De penitentia by various intellectuals demonstrates. The period witnessed as well the development of new kinds of penitential literature and an increase of business at the papal curia. Gratians De penitentia exercised influence in both realms. In brief, Gratians De penitentia constituted the fundamental text on penance in the period.

Mary Magdalene and Her Sister Martha: An Edition and Translation of the Medieval Welsh Lives provides scholarly editions and English translations of the medieval Welsh versions of the legends of Mary Magdalene and Martha. Described by Victor Saxer as medieval best sellers, these hagiographical tales, which described how Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha survived a perilous sea voyage from the holy land and evangelized Provence, were available in many different Latin and vernacular versions and circulated widely in the medieval West. The texts were translated or adapted into Middle Welsh some time before the mid-fourteenth century: the Middle Welsh Life of Mary Magdalene is extant in thirteen manuscripts and the Middle Welsh Life of Martha is preserved in eight of the same manuscripts. Jane Cartwright makes the Middle Welsh versions available to an international audience for the first time and provides a detailed study of the Welsh manuscripts that contain the texts, a comparison between the different manuscripts versions and a discussion of the wider hagiographical context of the texts in Wales. The volume includes transcriptions, editions and translations of the two Lives based on the oldest most complete extant versions found in the Red Book of Talgarth c. 1400, as well as an additional section of text describing Mary Magdalenes life before Christs crucifixion from the fifteenth-century Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales, Peniarth MS 27ii. The edition is accompanied by a comprehensive glossary which provides translations of all medieval Welsh words that occur in the texts, an analysis of the development and transmission of the legends, as well as a discussion of the relevance and popularity of these two female saints in late medieval Wales: medieval Welsh poetry, church dedications, and holy wells are also considered.

Chaput for Public Discourse Travis Curtright sets the record straight that there is just one [More,] unified by a belief that faith and reason work togetherand that both are bound together in a common social framework rooted in proper authority. St. Thomas More remains an example for Catholics who wish to be good citizens and people of faith. Curtright ably explains that the resources in Mores work are still available to contemporary Catholics. National Catholic Register The One Thomas More is a convincing reappraisal of Thomas Mores life and writings, coming after decades of contradictory critiques. Also of importance are Curtrights insights into aspects of More that have so far remained marginal in scholarship, such as More the moralist or More the philosopher, which here complete a portrait of the sixteenth century statesman, author and polemicist, in a particularly comprehensive study.Marie-Claire Phlippeau, Editor of Moreana This book presents a lucid, intelligent, and well-written account of Thomas More by exploring a crucial unifying principle that animates his thinking and writings. Curtrights argument, impressively grounded in literature, philosophy, history, and theology, presents compelling evidence to counter the biological narratives of two Thomas Mores. In this context, More emerges as a consistent and thoughtful writer and not the caricature often put forth by modern-day detractors. On Liturgical Asceticism
David W. Fagerberg
David Fagerbergs contribution is creative and original. He presents an able and accessible summary of the Orthodox ascetical traditionvaluable in its own rightand combines it with creative insight to bring this tradition to bear on how we conceive our own participation in the liturgy and what effect this has on our understanding of theology. This brings the discussion of liturgical theology onto a whole new level.Jeremy Driscoll, OSB, Professor of Theology, Mount Angel Seminary and Pontifical Athenaeum San Anselmo, Rome

Richer of Saint-Remi
The Methods and Mentality of a Tenth-Century Historian
Justin Lake
The History of Richer of Reims is one of the rare treasures of a period for which we have relatively few narrative texts. Lakes work makes a significant contribution not merely to our understanding of Richers history but also to the ways that scholars think about the intellectual culture of the tenth century and beyond.
