In the music industry today many performers use their own composed backing tracks, or perform covers of existing songs by other artists. In this case performers need to come by backing tracks either by buying these tracks or by employing the service of music production studios to create these backing tracks at very expensive rates. The service of providing backing tracks has grown into a huge business not only in South Africa, but on a worldwide scale. This 3 month short course focuses on the most essential aspects of music production to create professional backing tracks of existing music, and is aimed at performers who wish to create their own backing tracks, or individuals who wish to provide backing tracks as a service.
ABOUT THE COURSE

Whether you are a novice music producer, performer or a music enthusiast creating backing tracks for clients or as a hobby this course will teach you the essential fundamentals of music production that are needed to produce professional quality backing tracks. No more outsourcing for your favorite backing tracks. The Backing Track Course will teach you the most important principals of MIDI manipulation as well as composition in order to create & produce your own high quality backing tracks of your favorite existing music. This course focuses on creating backing tracks whether from MIDI files, or recreation by means of composition. With an in depth look at a variety of VST plug-ins, students will gain valuable insight into sound selection in order to get their backing tracks sounding exactly like their original counterparts. Students will be able to gain resources as to where and how to come by original compositions in digital format i.e. MIDI files - which is the main method for creating backing tracks today. This course is ideal for people with or without any prior musical skills or experience that want to enter the world of music production through technology, in order to create professional backing tracks whether for their own performances or as a service for other entertainers.

COURSE OPPORTUNITIES & OUTCOMES

This course will provide you with the skills to create and produce professional backing tracks of existing music for various applications in the music industry Create backing tracks by means of composition from scratch or by using notation sheets. Have the ability to create backing tracks by means of MIDI files & MIDI manipulation. Be able to analyze original music and by means of sound selection, duplicate the original with professional quality. Use your backing tracks for performance purposes without the need to buy tracks from third parties. Create and sell backing tracks to other performing artists as a service. Have knowledge of MIDI resources for use in creating backing tracks.
CLASSES

Classes consist of a four-hour theoretical and practical session, once a week (Saturdays 10:00 14:15) and unscheduled practical sessions during the rest of the week. (Practical work can also be done at home) Once enrolled, you are required to book a day and timeslot when you want to attend your theoretical class within the available timeslots. Weekly practical sessions are booked in the dedicated practice rooms in the timeslots that suit the student. Classes consist of 8 dedicated DAW workstations.
STARTING DATE

This 3 months course runs three times a year: March / June / September. Please contact EMENDY College reception to find out the exact starting date for the next course. Registration ends on the day the course starts. The total duration of the course is 12 theoretical sessions (4 hours) and unscheduled practical hours for assignments and practical projects over a period of 3 months.
PRE REQUESITES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION

The requirements for this course are: Grade 8 Computer literacy Language English (spoken and written)
SOFTWARE & HARDWARE

The course is mainly based on Cubase 6 (Music production software), Reason 5.0 as well as other industry standard music production and recording software and hardware. Once enrolled, a STUDENT automatically qualifies for student discount on all software and hardware at ORANGE Music retail shop for up to 50%. This one time opportunity only applies for registered students for the duration of their studies.

COSTS, PAYMENTS & REGISTRATION

A R800 administration and registration fee is payable on the date of registration. The total cost (excluding registration cost) of the course is R5, 950 once-off before commencing of the course.
