TECHNICAL MANUAL 1D SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

These systems are used for the precast industry. The 1D-lifting and fixing systems are suitable for de-mould, transporting and
installing the precast concrete units. These systems can be handled in a simple and safe way.
Some of the advantages of this system are:
- Different types of lifting sockets,
- Threaded lifting loops and cast-in lifting loops,
- The lifting system engages and releases in a simple and safe manner,
- The fixing systems are economical devices used for assembling the precast unit on the site,
- Some of the fixing systems can be re-used, such as access panels which are to be removed for maintenance.
The 1-D LIFTING SYSTEM combines a lifting anchor embedded in concrete unit and a lifting device. The cast-in lifting loops are
suitable for a single use. After the concrete unit has been installed, normally the external part of the loop has to be cut off.
All components of the 1-D SYSTEM are classified by load groups.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
GENERAL GUIDANCE FOR ALL LIFTS
You must ensure that the concrete has at least 15 N/mm strength before start the lifting.
The first choice for most lifting applications is the Lifting Socket with Waved End. For positioning the inserts always check the
permitted edge distances and spacing between inserts.
We recommend restricting the lift angle to a maximum of 30 when an angled lift is necessary to be used.
For a proper choosing of lifting system you must consider how frequently the precast unit is going to be lifted.
The cast in threaded elements (anchors or fixing inserts) can be cast flush or recessed for corrosion protection.
This recess is filled with fine concrete after use.
All the Lifting Systems are tested before delivery under a test load three times the working load.
Each Lifting System has an individual testing certificate attached.

GENERAL GUIDANCE FOR THREADED SYSTEMS

The threaded lifting inserts are made in two variants: one with metric thread and the other with round thread. The Threaded
Lifting Loops also have metric or round thread, which means that they fit both metric and Rd inserts.

TECHNICAL MANUAL 1D SYSTEM

SPECIFIC GUIDANCE FOR THREADED SYSTEMS

For plain sockets with a cross drilled hole, a specified reinforcing tail must be used. If this inserts are embedded in thin precast
units the reinforcing tail has to be cranked. It is recommended not to use flat tails. In thin precast units use Lifting Socket with
Foot Plate and where reuse of inserts is planned, for maintenance access, this inserts must be made from stainless steel.
Special reinforcement tail has to be used in this case. Check that the tail can be adapted to the edge distance.
For turning/pitching additional reinforcement is required. Design for reduced loads when anchors are used to turn/pitch a panel
from horizontal to vertical position. For turning / pitching do not use a Threaded Lifting Loop.

GENERAL GUIDANCE FOR CAST-IN WIRE LOOP SYSTEMS

Cast-in lifting loops are normally used for heavy lifts. The wire loop projects above the surface of the concrete ready for the
crane hook. The lifting loop is easy to place in the reinforcement cage of precast unit. Normally it must be cut off after the unit
has been installed.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION CHOOSING THE TYPE OF ANCHOR

SAFETY RULES
The lifting system consists of a threaded anchor embedded in concrete and a threaded lifting device. The threaded lifting loop is
connected to the anchor only when required for lifting. Ensure that the concrete has at least 15 N/mm strength before starting
the lifting. These lifting systems are not suitable for severe re-use.
In designing the lifting system it is essential to use the following safety factors against breaking:

for steel component

c=3

for concrete element

c=2

for steel wires

c=4
The maximum load permitted on the components quoted in the tables has been obtained by applying a safety factor on test
data.
LOAD CAPACITY
The load capacity of the anchor depends on multiple factors such as:

The deadweight of the precast concrete element G

Adhesion to the mould

The load direction, angle of pull.

Number of load bearing anchors

The edge distance and spacing of the anchors

The strength of the concrete at the time of operating: lifting or transporting

The embedded depth of the anchor

Dynamic forces

The reinforcement arrangement

1) The total mass G of the precast reinforced concrete element is determined using a density of: = 25 kN/m
G=xV
V=Lxlxg

where:

V the volume of precast unit in m

L length in m
l width in m
g thickness in m

2) Adhesion to the mould

Adhesion forces between the mould and the concrete depend on the type of mould used. The value Ha of adhesion to the
mould is calculated through the following equation:
Ha = q x A in kN
where: q - the adhesion to mould factor
A - the area of contact between the mould and the concrete unit when starting the lift.

for oiled steel mould

q = 1 kN/m

for varnished timber mould

q = 2 kN/m

for rough timber mould

q = 3 kN/m
For double-T slabs and coffered units the adhesion to the mould is higher than normal. It is used for easy calculation of a
multiple of the mass.
- Double T slab
Ha = 2 x G

- Coffered elements
Ha = 4 x G
Adhesion to the mould should be minimized before lifting out of the mould by removing as many parts of the mould as possible.

3) Dynamic forces
When the movement of the precast units is performed by lifting gear, dynamic forces which depend on the lifting gear used
appear.

For cranes with precision lifting, such as those in manufacturing plants the lifting load coefficient is f = 1.1 1.3.
IN THE PRECAST YARD:
-

for de-mould f = 1.1

for pitch and transport f = 1.3

ON SITE:
-

for pitch/transport/install f = 1.5.

when transporting suspended precast elements over uneven terrain, the lifting load coefficient used is f > 2

4) Total load of precast unit for calculating the anchor is determined by the following equation:
- When de-mould

F tot = (G + Ha) x f

- When transporting

F tot = G x f

5) The load of each anchor depends on the embedded position of the anchor in the precast unit and also on the transporting
mode:
a)

If the arrangement of the anchors is asymmetrical in relation to the centre of gravity, the individual anchor supports
different loads. These loads are calculated through the following equations:

Fa = F tot x b / (a + b)
Fb = F tot x a / (a + b)
Note: To avoid tilting of the unit during transport, the load should be suspended from the lifting beam such that its centre of
gravity is directly below the crane hook.

Page 9

TECHNICAL MANUAL 1D SYSTEM

b) In the case of transporting without lifting beam, the load on the anchor depends on the cable angle ().
The cable angle is determined by the length of the suspending cable. We recommend that, if possible, should be kept to
30. The tensile force on the anchor is increased with a cable angle coefficient z.
F = z x F tot / n

CALCULATION EXAMPLE
1) SLAB UNIT

The slab unit has the following dimensions: L = 5 m, l = 2 m, g = 0.2 m

Mass G = 25 x (5 x 2 x 0.2) = 50 kN (~5t)
Mould area A = 5 x 2 = 10 m
Anchor number n = 2
a)

De-mould at the plant:

Adhesion to mould factor

Lifting load coefficient
Cable angle factor
Concrete strength 15 N / mm

q = 2 kN / m
f = 1.1
z = 1.04 ( = 15.0)

F = (G + q x A) x f x z / n
F = (50 + 2 x 10) x 1.1 x 1.04 / 2 = 40.04 kN
b)

Transport at the plant:

Lifting load coefficient

Cable angle factor
Concrete strength 15 N / mm

f = 1.3
z = 1.04 ( = 15.0)

F=Gxfxz/n
F = 50 x 1.3 x 1.04 / 2 = 33.8 kN
c)

Transport at site:

Lifting load coefficient

Cable angle factor
Concrete strength 35 N / mm

f = 1.5
z = 1.16 ( = 30.0)

F=Gxfxz/n
F = 50 x 1.5 x 1.16/ 2 = 43.5 kN
An anchor in the 5t range is required.
d)

If all factors were applied, the result would be:

F=(G+qxA)xfxz/n
F = ( 50 + 2 x 10) x 1.5 x 1.16 / 2 = 60.9 kN
The loads occurring on site are often greater than those in the plant as cable angle and lifting load coefficient may be greater. At
this stage the concrete strength is usually higher resulting in a greater load capacity of the anchor.

LIFTING SYSTEM
THREADED LIFTING LOOP - THL
Threaded lifting loops are suitable to be used with all sizes of threaded lifting sockets. They are economic lifting systems and
can be used for most applications, especially for site operations. Threaded lifting loops are not suitable for turning or pitching.
They can be reused, but only after inspection. If they are kept in stores for reuse they must be inspected every six months and
retested every year. These lifting systems are not recommended for severe reuse conditions.
Threaded lifting loops should only be attached to the concrete unit and used after the concrete strength has reached 15 N/mm.
In some cases it may be economical and practical to leave this lifting loop with the concrete unit until final installation.
The threaded lifting loop is made of high grade steel wire AISI 1010 (W 1.1121), swaged in a steel ferrule made of steel
S355JO. It is zinc plated for protection against corrosion. Each threaded lifting loop has attached a label marked with the
admissible load, the thread type and the code number of the testing. Each label has an unique color code.
Before use, you must check that the wires are in good condition. Do not use if the wire cable is bent, crushed or kinked and if
there is any loosening of the outer layer. Reject if the wire is corroded.
You must ensure that the thread is fully bottomed out in the socket before lifting. It is permissible to back off one turn to ensure
that the wire is correctly aligned for lifting.

THREADED LIFTING EYE - THS2

The Threaded Lifting Eye can be used with all types of anchors and threaded sockets. They are suitable for most lifting
situations, particularly for turning and pitching. They are more durable than the lifting systems manufactured from steel wire and
can be reused, but only after inspection. If they are kept in stores for reuse they must be inspected every six months and
retested every year.
The Threaded Lifting Eye should only be attached to the concrete unit and used after the concrete strength has reached 15
N/mm. Usually they must be detached after the concrete units are installed.
The Lifting Eye is manufactured of steel S355JO and the threaded bolt is made of alloy steel bar 34CrMo4 (W 1.7220). This
lifting system is suitable for use with threaded socket cast in flush with the face of the unit, or recessed using metal recess
formers.
You must ensure that the thread is fully bottomed out in the socket before lifting. It is permissible to back off one turn to ensure
that the eye is correctly aligned for lifting.

TECHNICAL MANUAL 1D SYSTEM

APPLICATIONS

The preferred option is the vertical lift. The angle of lift () should not normally be more than 30. It is not acceptable pulling
back towards the unit.

CAST-IN LIFTING LOOPS TIL

Cast-in Lifting Loops are the most economic lifting system. They require relatively large edge distances. You must consider the
exposure of steel wire loops after the installation of the concrete unit. Once the unit is set in the finally position protruding hoops
can be cut off, if required, but the cut ends must be protected against corrosion to avoid rust staining. The wire steel rope is
more suitable for forming a cast-in hoop because it is flexible and the lifting loop made from reinforcement bar is liable to
fatigue, especially if bent during angled lift. In the table below are indicated the minimum dimensions for installation in reinforced
concrete. For acute angled lifts may be required additional lateral reinforcement.
Cast-in Lifting Loops are composed from a high grade steel wire AISI 1010 (W 1.1121), swaged in a ferrule made of AlMg1.8, a
tape at the middle and a identification label, which must not to slide down the hoop during casting and should remain visible.
Each lifting loop has attached a label marked with the admissible load and the code number of the testing. Each label has a
unique color code. Cast-in Lifting Loops is zinc plated for protection against corrosion.
These lifting systems are suitable for use through a single cycle from production to final installation. They are not suitable for
multiple use applications.
To choose the correct size for any lift it is important to take into account the angle of lift, the crane factor and the adhesion to the
formwork.
Cast-in lifting loops must be installed in the direction of the expected load. They should be suspended from supports attached to
the formwork so that 2/3 of the hoop will be cast in and 1/3 remains exposed. The hoops must be fastened to the reinforcement
cage to avoid movement during concreting.
During the storage of the precast unit it must be avoid the bending of steel wire rope.
Exposed hoops can be attached to standard crane hooks, but the curvature radius of the crane hook should be at least equal to
the diameter of the wire rope.
It is essential to check that the wire rope is in good condition, without any broken, crushed or with raveled wire. Also do not used
if there are kinks in the hoop or the wire rope is excessive corroded. Any Cast-in Lifting Loop with sign of damage should not be
used.

PLAIN LIFTING SOCKET AND LIFTING SOCKET WITH FLAT END

The Plain Lifting Sockets and the Lifting Sockets with Flat End are economical solutions and are suitable in thin concrete
components, where the long tail provides excellent anchorage. The reinforcement tail is important and must be installed as
shown in the yard. The Plain Lifting Sockets are manufactured of steel S355JO zinc plated or of stainless steel AISI 316Ti
(SS4), the Lifting Sockets with Flat End are made of steel tube S355JO galvanized. These sockets are designated for lifting and
are not to be confused with fixing sockets. The safe working loads shown are after the application of a safety factor on test
loads: c=2 for 15 N/mm concrete and c=3 for steel.

PLAIN LIFTING SOCKET HSB-EV WITH STOPER

This are plain lifting socket made from round tube of steel S355JO galvanized with a plastic stopper inside made from
polyethylene LDPE 035 to stop the wet concrete admission in the thread zone.

Reinforcement tails are essential for all lifting sockets with foot plate. These lifting products are not recommended for
turning/pitching. They are ideal for use and re-use, such as access panels which must be removed for maintenance.
When the lifting angle is between 12.5 and 45 additional reinforcement is recommended as shown below.

TECHNICAL MANUAL 1D SYSTEM

FIXING INSERTS
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
GENERAL GUIDANCE FOR FIXING INSERTS
The fixing inserts are easy and economic systems for assembling concrete precast units.
SAFETY RULES AND ADMISSIBLE LOADS
The admissible static tensile-loads are determined after combining the data from numerous tests for pure pull or shear load. The
data obtained from these tests take into account multiple factors such as: composition, uniformity, strength, age of concrete, the
circumstance which appears at installation. The admissible static loads for Terwa fixing inserts, embedded completely into
concrete, are valid for pull out or shear load and have a safety factor of 3-4 x to the average breaking load of concrete with
strength of 25 N/mm.
ADMISSIBLE EFFORTS
The admissible loads indicated in this catalog refer to axial pull out loads or shear loads. When these efforts are combined the
resultant of these forces is obtained through the following formula:
, Ft pull out load, Ff share load.

Fadm =

EDGE DISTANCE AND SPACING

The minimum edge distance depends on numerous factors such as: embedded depth, shear load pointed to the edge of
concrete unit, reinforcements near the inserts.
Note:
a = minimum 50mm

For short edge distance it is recommended to use long inserts, inserts with cross-pin or reinforcement next to the edge of the
concrete.
CORROSION PROTECTION
Most of the fixing inserts are galvanized. The thickness of the zinc layer is less than 10 m in this case. The corrosion
resistance depends on the environmental circumstances. Hot dipped galvanizing is not possible for fixing inserts made from
steel tubes with a flattening end. Some of the fixing inserts are manufactured from stainless steel bar X5CrNi18.10(A2) or
X2CrNiMo17.13.3(A3) - SR EN 10088.3.
The cast in threaded elements (anchors or fixing inserts) can be cast flush or recessed for corrosion protection.
This recess is filled with fine concrete after use.

TECHNICAL MANUAL 1D SYSTEM

TORQUE AND SCREW LENGTH

For assembling the elements, the fixing screw must enter in insert a distance, at least, equal to the screw diameter. The maxim
torque must correspond to a screw with class 8.8.

CONCRETE QUALITY
The loads indicated in tables are available for a concrete with strength of 25 N/mm. For other values for concrete strength it is
necessary to apply to indicated loads the correction coefficients shown below.

PARTICULAR CASES
If the fixing inserts are in a recessed position, it is recommended to use an adequate filling (spacer) in order to load the insert
properly without loading the concrete. If this is not possible, you should increase the real load applicator to insert with the value
F shown below and after that compare with the admissible load from catalog.
F = Ma/0.2 x dnom
F = additional force - daN
Ma = torque applied to the screw - daNm
dnom = diameter of the inserts - m
Example:
For a fixing insert M12: dnom = 0.012 m
Maximum torque 0.8 daNm
F = 0.8/0.2 x 0.012 = 333daN
This means that, for fixing inserts BSR M12, after applying a torque, more than half of the load capacity is lost and a major
torque is forbidden.

REINFORCEMENTS
The cross-pin of the fixing inserts BSRS, BSRFS, HBUS gives no increase of the admissible load but has to be regarded as an
extra safety-measure in case of voids or air pockets.
The fixing inserts with cross drilled hole permit an increasing of admissible load with 10% when a U shape anchor of sufficient
length (approx. 50 x diam.) is added in the cross-hole.

The admissible pull out load can be used with a minimum:
-edge distance of: 1.5 x total length of the anchor,
-centre to centre distance of: b = 3 x total length of the anchor
The admissible shear load can be used with a minimum
-edge distance of: 2.5 x total length of the anchor

Group 3
The international standards (CEB Bulletin 233 and Technical Approval of Metal Anchor for Use in Concrete 1997) are valid for
the concrete qualities B25B65. Terwa Bolt anchors HBB and HBB-SS meet the requirement mentioned in the standards and
can be calculated without any additional tests.
Group 4
The fixing and lifting sockets TRL, TGK, TGL are especially suited for use in thin prefab panels and where anchors have to take
high pull out load.

KU-10

The plastic nailing plates KU-02 and KU-10 are nailed to formwork. Using forming wax on the nailing plate makes it easier to
remove and screw on anchor or fixing insert. The anchor must be fastened to the reinforcement by suitable means so that it
does not move during concreting. After stripping, unscrew.
