sent off to the producers of CBS's "The Amazing Race," a reality television game show in which teams of two people, race around the word in competition with other teams, all vying for a million dollar prize. A month after sending in the application, Wiyninger and Merkey heard back. "We had no idea that we were going to go from a io second video to now," said Merkey, 25. Wiyninger and Merkey were selected as one of the ii teams competing in season 23 of "The Amazing Race." Facing teams like the married ER doctors, cousins, baseball wives, former NFL teammates, and theater producers, Wiyninger and Merkey are known as the best friends team. SIXTH GRADE AT CORDELL Wiyninger said he remembers when he met Merkey. His family had moved to Cordell from Moore and he was the new kid in the sixth grade. "I was in the same class with Danny," said Wiyninger. "He was the first pal I met. We have pretty much been best friends since then." Wiyninger said he has been best friends with Merkey since he was 12 and inseparable at times. The two both graduated from Cordell High School in 2006. Wiyninger headed to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford and Merkey enlisted in the Marine Corps. Both admit it was difficult to stay in touch during those years, but their friendship remained. Merkey, who later hurt his knee while serving, was medically discharged from the Marines and returned back to western Oklahoma. "We just picked back up

from where we left," said Merkey. Merkey and Wiyninger said they enjoy playing golf, watching sports including the Oklahoma City Thunder and taking road trips, like the time they drove to New Orleans to catch an NFL game. "You know how people graduate and grow apart, we didn't," said Wiyninger. "We actually worked at the same job. I helped get him his job." The two are both employed by Schlumberger. Currently Merkey works out of the Elk City office and Wiyninger is based in Oklahoma City.

Both are used to working 8o hours each week, working in temperatures in the triple digits and working in rains and snow. "Working in the oil field, you can't stop because you're tired," said Wiyninger. "You have to stay trucking until the job's done. We never give up and we know how to handle stuff."

The two are scheduled to work the night of Sept. 29 but plan to watch the show each week together, if their schedules permit. The friends said it has been an exciting past few weeks since CBS revealed the cast for the coming season and began to promote the ii teams. "Everyone couldn't believe it," said Merkey. "We are from Cordell and that was the town we listed for the Amazing Race. Everyone was blown away." "We are just good, smalltown Oklahoma guys," said Wiyninger. "We just hope to make everyone proud in Cordell and Elk City. Hopefully, we represent western Oklahoma pretty well."

she said. "We just want to show people how dangerous it is." During the demonstration, drivers wore helmets for protection as they each swerved from side to side and left the course marked by orange traffic cones several times. FCCLA students also tied blue ribbons on each car in the parking to remind students when they look out their window that texting and drive can wait. After the demonstration, orange, rubber ring bands with the words "It Can Wait" were handed out to each student in attendance. When worn on the thumb, it reminds individuals to put away their phone when reaching to send a text message. Students were also given the opportunity to sign a pledge that said they would never text and drive again.
