SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL SAN MIGUEL ARCNGEL

Who is like unto God).

Before the Roman Missal (Sacramentary) of 1970 the feast of Saint Gabriel (Strength of God) was observed on March 24 and Saint Raphael (Medicine of God) on October 24. Since then, all three of the Great Archangels have been celebrated together. Angels are pure, created spirits. The name angel means servant or messenger of God. Angels are celestial or heavenly beings, on a higher order than human beings. Angels have no bodies and do not depend on matter for their existence or activity. They are distinct from saints, which men

can become. Angels have intellect and will, and are immortal. They are a vast multitude, but each is an individual person. Archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels listed in the Bible. St. Michael is one of the principal angels; his name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against the enemy and his followers. Four times his name is recorded in Scripture: Daniel 10:13 The prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia. Daniel 12:1 At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. Jude 1:9 "The archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him but said, May the Lord rebuke you!. St. Jude alludes to an ancient Jewish tradition of a dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses, an account of which is also found in the apocryphal book on the assumption of Moses (Origen, De Principiis III.2.2). St. Michael concealed the tomb of Moses; Satan, however, by disclosing it, tried to seduce the Jewish people to the sin of hero-worship. St. Michael also guards the body of Eve, according to the "Revelation of Moses" (Apocryphal Gospel). Revelation 12:7-9 "Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it." St. John speaks of the great conflict at the end of time, which reflects also the battle in heaven at the beginning of time. According to the Fathers of the Church there is often question of St. Michael in Scripture where his name is not mentioned. They speculate he was the cherub who stood at the gate of paradise, "to keep the way of the tree of life" (Genesis 3:24) (although this is sometimes referred to as the Archangel Uriel Light of God who is mentioned in other apocryphal writings), the angel through whom God published the Decalogue to his chosen people, the angel who stood in the way against Balaam (Numbers 22:22 sqq.), the angel who routed the army of Sennacherib (2 Kings 19:35).

Christian tradition gives to St. Michael four offices: To fight against Satan. To rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death. To be the champion of God's people, the Jews in the Old Law, the Christians in the New Testament; therefore, he was the patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights during the Middle Ages. To call away from earth and bring men's souls to judgment.
Within the Hierarchy of Saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary always has the highest position, followed by St. Michael the Archangel - the Prince of Angels, because of his role in casting out Satan from heaven, then followed by the orders of angels, then St. John the Baptist and the saints. On October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. The Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass; then, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the Prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said everywhere. When asked what had happened, he explained that as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation: The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can destroy your Church." The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so." Satan: "To do so, I need more time and more power." Our Lord: "How much time? How much power?" Satan: "75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service." Our Lord: "You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will."

Thanks to all who serve the Sick and Homebound of our parish for your wonderful service to those who bear the Cross of Christ in their sufferings and handicaps!
We are grateful for those who helped us to gather information this past spring to know who are serving as Ministers of Care to the Sick and Homebound. We still lack some information on those who are taking Holy Communion to those in need. So, if you have not given this information to us already (including family members who take communion home to their loved ones) we need it. The Bishop would like the names of all who serve as Eucharistic Ministers in Church and to the sick. Please include the following information: Your name Your address and phone number Name of Person you visit His/her address and phone number How long you have been taking communion to him/ her Could you please bring the information to the parish secretaries at the parish office who will give it to Father Tomy; he is coordinating our parish database. This will also help us if a Minister becomes sick and we need to find a substitute to take communion to your loved one/ sick/homebound you minister to. If youve previously contacted the parish office and your communion responsibilities havent changed, you do not have to contact the parish office again. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Respect Life Sunday is next weekend, October 6. The U. S. Bishops' theme this year is, "Open Your Hearts to Life," "a favorite theme of Pope Francis and one that has a particular urgency today, as the 'culture of death' is gaining an ever-wider foothold." Look for the bishops' flyer in next week's bulletin. Lapel LIFE roses will be distributed by the Council of Catholic Women after Masses next weekend, and baskets will be available for donations to help support our local crisis pregnancy centers. When you display the rose on your lapel or purse, you silently proclaim your respect for life from conception to natural death. National Life Chain - This is a silent, prayerful witness, standing side by side forming a "life chain," along roads at 11 locations throughout the diocese for one hour in prayer, holding a variety of signs (supplied at the site) such as "Abortion Kills Children," or "Abortion Hurts Women," or "Pray to End Abortion." St. John's parishioners will meet in the parish's south parking lot at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 and travel to the abortion clinic nearest our parish, Aanchor Clinic in Glen Ellyn (on the north side of Roosevelt Rd., just E. of Rt. 355), to pray with others from surrounding churches from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and return to our church parking lot at 4:00 p.m. All are welcome. If it's difficult to stand for 1 hour, please bring a chair. This time of silent, unified prayer is an effective witness for passersby and is a heartening experience for those who participate! 40 Days For Life Prayer Campaign , September 25 through November 3. This is a call to 40 days of prayer and fasting, 40 days of peaceful vigil, 40 days of community outreach. Invite your family, friends, and parish organization members to be part of 40 DAYS FOR LIFE. Our parish's three-hour weekly prayer vigil commitment is each Tuesday in October from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside of the Aanchor Health Center, 1186 Roosevelt Rd. in Glen Ellyn (on the N. side of Roosevelt Rd. just E. of Rt. 355). From our RE Director . . .

This past weekend I attended Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Carmel, Indiana. The church was packed! Children everywhere! Everyone sang; yes, even the teens! The line for Holy Communion seemed like it would never end! To be honest, I had to double check to see if it was a Catholic Church! So I assumed-it has to be the priest! Nope, his homily was good but not outstanding! Maybe it was the choir? Nope, just ordinary folks singing praises to God. So why was this community so filled with passion? They were a welcoming community-EVERYONE was welcomed! Here is a snippet from their bulletin. This is a slightly revised version of a letter by an anonymous mom sharing the importance of welcoming families into our church-and not judging them when the children become unruly. As we begin the 2013-2014 Religious Education year, I thought I would share this note with you. Dear Parents of young children, You are doing something really, really important! I know it is not easy! We see you with your arms overflowing, and know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring! We watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and diaper bag, as you find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things our of your bag of tricks to try to quiet them. And we see you with your toddlers and your preschoolers. We watch your cringe when your children ask innocent questions in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperation in our voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyones eyes on you. Not everyone is looking but I know it feels this way. We know youre wondering, it this worth it? Why do I bother? We know you often leave church more exhausted than fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important. When you are here you fill the church with a joyful noise! When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully present! When you are here, we are reminded that this faith isnt only about quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, we have hope that these pews wont be empty in 10 years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. I know they are learning how and why we worship now, before its too late. We see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of crumbs we see children who insist on going 2 pews up to share with someone they have never met. We hear the echoes of Amens just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together. We watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words of mass. We know how hard it is to do what youre doing, but we want you to know, IT MATTERS, it matters to your children and it matters to us! Thank you!!
