Mechanism of Action A centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound not chemically related to opioids. Thought to bind to opioid receptors and inhibit reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin.

Nursing Responsibility 1. Reasess patients level of pain at least 30 minutes after administration. Monitor bowel and bladder function. Anticipate need for laxative. For better analgesic effect, give drug before the onset of pain. Monitor patient for drug dependence. Withdrawal of symptoms may occur if drug is stopped abruptly. Reduce dosage gradually.
