Power Steering - Steering Gear Removal and Installation Special Tool(s)

Focus 1999 (08/1998-12/2004) Print Report An Error

Alignment Pins, Subframe 205 - 316 (15 - 097A) Separator, Ball Joint 211 - 020 (13 - 006)

General Equipment Transmission jack

Removal
All Vehicles

1. Center the steering wheel. Remove the ignition key and lock the steering in position.

Vehicles built up to 12/1998

2. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear pinion extension. 1. Loosen the top bolt. 2. Remove the lower bolt. 3. Move the sleeve upwards.

Vehicles built 12/1998 onwards

3. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear pinion extension. 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Release the pinion shaft extension from the steering column.

All Vehicles

4. Remove the tie - rod end retaining nuts (wheel removed for clarity).

5. CAUTION:When the tie - rod ends are detached from the wheel knuckles, the ball joint seals must be wrapped in cloth to protect them. Using the special tool, detach the tie - rod ends from the wheel knuckles.

6. Detach the stabilizer bar links from the strut and spring assemblies.

Vehicles with diesel engine

7. Remove the engine undershield.

8. NOTE:Diesel vehicle shown, other variants similar. Remove the support insulator to transaxle center bolt.

9. NOTE:Right - hand drive shown, left - hand drive similar. Remove the steering gear heat shield. Remove the two bolts.

10. NOTE:Left - hand drive shown, right - hand drive similar. Detach the hose support clamp. Remove the screw.

11. NOTE:Right - hand drive shown, left - hand drive similar. Detach the power steering hoses from the steering gear. 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Rotate the clamp plate. Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

12. Using a suitable Transmission jack support the crossmember. 13. Remove the six crossmember bolts (support removed for clarity).

14. Lower the crossmember.

15. Remove the steering column coupling shaft and floor seal. 1. Disconnect the floor seal from the steering gear pinion housing. Release the clips. 2. Remove the bolt.

16. NOTE:Left - hand drive shown, right - hand drive similar. Remove the steering gear.

Installation
All Vehicles

1. NOTE:Check the O - ring seals for perishing, splits or cuts. Install new O - ring seals as necessary.

2. CAUTION:Make sure the pressure valve is correctly located in the valve body. Install the steering gear.

3. NOTE:Visually inspect the floor seal before installation. Make sure the sealing surface of the floor seal is clean and not permanently deformed. The foam portion of the floor seal should be between 25 - 30 mm. Install a new floor seal if below the specified value

NOTE:Make sure the floor seal is correctly located on the steering gear pinion housing. Install the steering column coupling shaft and floor seal. 4. Using 1. 2. 3. the special tools, align the crossmember. Insert the guide pins through the crossmember aligning holes. Slide the locking plates into the grooves and tighten the guide pin sleeve. Raise the crossmember engaging the guide pins into the chassis aligning holes.

5. Install the crossmember bolts.

6. Remove the transmission jack. 7. Remove the subframe alignment pins. 8. Install the power steering hoses. Install the hoses and rotate the clamp plate.

9. Install the hose support clamp.

10. Install the steering gear heat shield.

11. NOTE:Diesel vehicle shown, other variants similar. Install the support insulator center bolt.

12. Install the engine undershield.


All Vehicles

13. Install the stabilizer bar links to the strut and spring assemblies.

14. Install the tie - rod ends.

15. CAUTION:Make sure the steering is in the straight - ahead position, before lowering the vehicle. Lower the vehicle.
Vehicles built up to 12/1998

16. WARNING:Install a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury. Connect the steering column shaft to the steering gear pinion extension.

Vehicles built 12/1998 onwards

17. WARNING:Install a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury. Connect the steering column shaft to the steering gear pinion extension.

All Vehicles

18. Fill the system. For additional information, refer to Start Up Procedure After Gear/Pump Overhaul in this section. 19. Check the toe adjustment. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00 Suspension System - General Information.
