to turn in on Tuesday, October 8. Make sure to explain each answer in detail or show your work. 1) Public relations staff at State U. collected data on peoples opinions of various colleges and universities in their state. They phoned 800 local residents. After identifying themselves, the callers asked the survey participants their ages, whether they had attended college, and whether they had a favorable opinion of the university. The official report to the universitys directors claimed that, in general, people had very favorable opinions of the university. (a) Identify the Ws of the data. Who 800 local residents; What- ages, attendance of college, favorable opinion of university; When N/A; Where State U.; Why to collect data on peoples opinions of various colleges and universities in the state (b) Identify the variables, classify each as categorical or quantitative, and furthermore, if they are discrete or continuous. Ages quantitative and continuous Attendance of college categorical Favorable opinion of university - categorical 2) A company held a blood pressure screening clinic for its employees. The results are summarized in the table below. The age is represented by each column and the blood pressure is represented by each row. Under 30 30-49 Over 50 Low 27 37 31 Normal 48 91 93 High 23 51 73 a) How many total patients are there? (27+48+23) + (37+91+51) + (31+93+73) = 474 b) What percent of patients from 30-49 had either normal or high blood pressure? Patients with normal or high blood pressure that are 30-49/Patients between 30-49= 142/179 = 79.33% 3) Here are the ages of patients who went to see the play First Date on Sunday, October 6th: 42, 20, 56, 23, 32, 41, 43, 45, 49, 38, 53, 75, 34, 43,44 a) Create a stem-and-leaf from this data. Stem I Leaf 2 I03 3 I248 4 I1233459 5 I36 6 I 7 I5

b) Describe the shape of the distribution. (Include modes, symmetry, and outliers or gaps.) The shape in the histogram is unimodal which means it has one mode, skewed to the left if you ignore the outlier, and has one outlier which is 75. This outlier is not an error, but probably an older audience who watches the show or a parent going with a younger child. c) Create a 5 Number Summary from the distribution. What is the IQR for this data? Minimum - 20 Q1- 34 Median-43 Q3- 49 Maximum- 75 IQR = Q3-Q1 = 49-34 = 15 4) Use the data above (and your graphing calculator) to find: a) The mean. 42.53 b) The variance. Square the sample or standard deviation. Sample variance 177.95 Population Variance 165.89 c) Sample standard deviation. 13.34 d) Population Standard Deviation. 12.88 5) A researcher is measuring the heights of girls between 16-18 years old. The mean height he found was 64 with a standard deviation of 4 inches. The data assumes the normal model. USE THIS FORMULA!!! (a) Ashley is 67 inches tall. She is taller than what proportion of girls? Draw a picture! N(64, 4) (67-64)/4 = 0.75 Look at the z-score table when z=0.75. You will get 0.7734. So she is 77.34% taller then girls between 16-18. (b) What proportion of girls are between 60 inches and 72 inches tall? Draw a picture! N(64,4) (60-64)/4 = -1 and (72-64)/4 = 2 So for z-score 1 you will 0.1587 get and for z-score 2 you will get 0.9817. Thus 0.9817 0.1587 is 0.8230. So 82.30% of girls are between 60 and 72 inches tall. (c) In order to be in the top 15% of girls heights between 16-18 years old, what is the minimum height you have to be? Draw a picture! In order to find the minimum height for the top 15% of girls we have to shade in and find the bottom 85% of girls or 0.8500. We know that the z-score is positive because positive z-scores include 50% of data. Looking at out z-score table we find the closest value to 0.8500 (0.8508) and correspond it to a z-score of 1.04. We then plug 1.04 for z in the formula to find x. 1.04 = (x-64)/4. Thus the minimum height that a girl has to be is 68.16 inches. 6) How does standardizing data into z-scores effect the shape, center, and spread of the distribution? It does not change the shape of the distribution of a variable, however, it does changes the center by making the mean 0 and changes the spread by making the standard deviation 1.
