THE Scunthorpe Labour
Party has said it feels Elliot
Morleys guilty pleas have
drawn a line under the
scandal over his expenses
claims.
Morley entered the pleas at
Southwark Crown Court yester-
day to two charges of false
accounting, related to his home
in Winterton.
After the brief hearing, Scun-
thorpe County Constituency
Labour Party chairman Mick
Grant said: Elliot Morley's
guilty plea yesterday finally
draws a line under the incident.
The Labour Party took imme-
diate action in suspending Elliot
and locally we have moved on,
following Nic Dakins election as
Member of Parliament for Scun-
thorpe in May last year.
We now look forward to fight-
ing North Lincolnshire Coun-
cils local elections and retaining
control of the authority.
Winterton residents were more
scathing of the disgraced former
MPs abuse of the expenses sys-
tem.
Granville Brooks, 64, of High
Street, said he believed Morley
and three other MPs charged
over their expenses had been
made scapegoats.
But he said he was pleased
Morley had admitted the
charges.
Mr Brooks said: We, as the
general public, have the right to
vote and we cast our vote
whichever way we see fit.
Having done that, whoever
gets into the seat of power should
be looking after our interests
and in this instance and this
scandal, they havent been doing
that.
Equally, the system was at
fault because it should have been
vetted a lot more closely.
Another Winterton resident,
who did not wish to be named,
added: He shouldnt have been
so daft and it serves him right.
He deserves all he gets.
He is a man who should have
been leading by example.
At the hearing, Morleys bar-
rister James Sturman QC told
Mr Justice Saunders that his cli-
ent accepted a jail term was
likely.
He added: We know it is not a
question of if but how long.
But he urged the judge to take
into account Morleys lifetime
of public service.
Reviewing lawyer for the
Crown Prosecution Service,
Simon Clements, said: Elliot
Morley has admitted his dishon-
esty.
In doing so, he has accepted
that his repeated and fraudulent
claims for one mortgage that had
been paid off and his excessive
claims for another were not legit-
imate in any way.
Morley had claimed he was
unaware the mortgage had been
paid off.
For most of us, paying off the
mortgage is a red letter day and
members of the public have
found it difficult to comprehend
his explanation that he was not
aware that had happened.
The parliamentary expenses
system exists to assist the pub-
lics representatives in carrying
out their duties, but Mr Morley
used it to line his own pockets
with just over 30,000 more
than an average households
annual income.
Such behaviour is blatantly
dishonest and cannot be
excused.
Morley had previously
appealed to the Court of Appeal
and the Supreme Court in a bid
to escape a trial, claiming he was
protected by the right of Par-
liamentary Privilege.
Campaign director at the Tax-
Payers Alliance Emma Boon
said: Thanks to Morley taking
so long to make an admission of
guilt, taxpayers have had to suf-
fer the insult not only of him
stealing fromthem, but dragging
out an expensive prosecution.
This guilty plea is one more
small step towards Parliament
regaining public trust.
Taxpayers will now expect a
jail term for Morley, in line with
sentences for other MPs.
Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin was
unavailable for comment after
yesterdays hearing.

This is small step towards Parliament regaining trust
One of three former MPs to have charges brought
ELLIOT Morley
becomes the latest
former MP to admit or
be found guilty of
charges brought in the
wake of the expenses
scandal.
Ex-Labour MP David
Chaytor admitted
claiming almost 13,000
in interest payments
for a mortgage he had
already repaid.
He pleaded guilty on
December 3 last year to
false accounting in
relation to
Parliamentary
expenses claims and
was sentenced to 18
months imprisonment
on January 7 this year.
He went on to lose an
appeal against the
sentence last month.
The first MP to stand
trial in relation to the
expenses scandal was
ex-Labour backbencher
Jim Devine.
He was found guilty
by a jury at Southwark
Crown Court on two
charges of false
accounting for claims
totalling 8,385 but was
cleared of one other
count relating to a
claim for cleaning
work. He was jailed for
16 months on March 30.
Eric Illsley became
the first sitting MP to
be convicted on
charges relating to
expenses when he
pleaded guilty to
around 14,500-worth of
claims he was not
entitled to on his
second home in
London.
The then-Labour MP
for Barnsley Central
quit his post before he
was sent to prison for
12 months by a judge at
Southwark Crown
Court on February 10.

Dressed in a dark suit and tie,
a sombre-faced Morley only
spoke to confirm his name and
address and entered guilty
pleas to the charges.
Silence met this
announcement.
There was then a dignified
hush in the court and a
discussion between the lawyers
about the next hearing.
It was confirmed that the
parties would come to an
agreement on May 12 about the
timing of the sentencing
hearing.
The court session lasted for
about half-an-hour.
The two charges against
Morley had been confirmed in
London by the Director of
Public Prosecutions, Keir
Starmer QC, at an earlier
magistrates hearing.
Morley was the fourth
MP to face charges
relating to the expenses
scandal that has rocked
Westminster.
Three other Labour MPs
are now serving prison
terms.
Morley will discover if he
faces a similar outcome at a
sentencing hearing that will be
scheduled following
pre-sentencing and mitigation
reports due after May 12.
After the hearing, which was
held in front of Mr Justice John
Saunders, Morley refused to
comment to a throng of
reporters and cameramen.
But he did agree to pause to
have his picture taken as he left
the court by Tower Bridge.
The former MP came out of
the front door of the crown
court with his lawyer.
Some photographers asked
the lawyer to stand aside to get
him on his own.
A few reporters shouted
questions such as do you
expect to go to jail? and are
you sorry?.
At that point, his lawyer said
there would be no statement.
A grim-faced Morley then
made his way with the lawyer to
the underground car park
immediately below the court
house.
Now he can do nothing but
await his fate.
