interStices

Interstices: Concept

Interstices is a sculptural memorial to honour the 283 soldiers that were cared for during the first world war at the Stamford Military Hospital. The design was derived through data mapping, with each soldier being represented as a statistic in a 3-Dimensional landscape. Being a soldier is being one unit of a system. It is for this reason that the memorial comprises 283 concrete cubes, collectively representing each of the soldiers and communicating the sad reality that masses of soldiers lives became components of a seemingly endless list of data. The name, regiment and rank of each soldier have specifically defined the location of every cube in the landscape. Constructed from cast concrete, each cube measures 200mm along each edge and is unique, with individual characteristic finishes brought on by the casting processes and the patient number of each soldier embossed on his corresponding cube.

The proposal has been designed for a specific site on the Parterre to be viewed from all angles, including views from high windows in the manor house opposite. A cast concrete plaque with a list of each soldier and his location in the landscape would be sited next to the memorial. The construction method allows for an extremely affordable, seamless design, eliminating any exposed connective elements and preventing any injury through public interaction. Interstices has been designed to feature in Dunham Massey as a visually appealing sculpture, drawing visitors in to then realise its depth and complexity upon inspection.
