Applications Hydrocarbon feedstocks used in the production of ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen typically contain organic sulfur compounds which must be removed prior to any further processing. Even trace amounts of sulfur can poison the nickel and copper catalysts used in downstream processes. Desulfurization is typically accomplished by first hydrogenating the organic sulfur compounds to form hydrogen sulfide: R2S + 2H2 2RH + H2S RSH + H2 RH + H2S

Then, reacting the hydrogen sulfide with a zinc oxide adsorbent to form zinc sulfide, effectively trapping the sulfur: ZnO + H2S ZnS + H2O Features BASF Sulfur Removal Technology is a mature zinc oxide adsorbent that has been optimized to achieve maximum sulfur pickup. Higher surface area As the feed gas passes through the catalyst bed, hydrogen sulfide is irreversibly adsorbed by the active zinc oxide particles within the catalyst (see Figure 1). This reaction starts at the outer surface and proceeds to the core of the catalyst. Since diffusion of hydrogen sulfide through the matrix is a slow process, more high-activity zinc oxide sites need to be available to maximize the sulfur adsorption. More active sites translate to a faster, more complete sulfur removal. BASF Sulfur Removal Technology is designed with this in mind as it provides an optimal surface area of highly active zinc oxide for maximal sulfur pickup.

High pore volume In order for the high surface area to be quickly reachable, a network of meso- and macro-pores must exist. As transport through the smaller micropores is typically too slow to achieve full exploitation of the active zinc oxide surface area, some of the surface will inevitably be lost leading to reduced sulfur pickup. BASF Sulfur Removal Technology has one of the largest pore volumes available to maximize the usable zinc oxide surface area and provide improved single bed operation. Improved handling and mechanical stability In addition to high surface area and pore volume, BASF Sulfur Removal Technology also features higher side-crush strength. As a result, dusting and attrition due to abrasion are lessened, leading to improved handling and reduced pressure drop over the lifetime of the catalyst. In addition, the size and shape of the extrudates have been optimized to further mitigate the impact of pressure drops. Packaging 200 kg (440 lbs) in 200-liter (55-gallon) steel drums
