Armagh/Irland; gestorben am 7. Mai 1990 in Toulouse. - V: Lehrer Patrick Fee (1882-1964); M: Anne Caraher (1881-1932). - Thomas Fee wurde als zweiter Sohn der Eheleute Patrick Fee und Anne Caraher am 3. November 1923 in dem Dorf Cullyhanna, im Sden der Grafschaft Armagh geboren. Der Vater war Lehrer im benachbarten Cregganduff und verfgte auch ber ein gutes Einkommen. Von seinen eigenen Shnen Paddy und Thomas, die frh die Mutter verloren hatten, verlangte der Vater im Unterricht mehr als von anderen Kindern, und so bekamen Bildung und Wissen von Kindheit an einen hohen Stellenwert fr Thomas. Nach Abschlu der Schule nahm der junge Mann das Studium der Philosophie und Theologie am St. Patrick's College Maynooth auf, um Priester zu werden. Parallel dazu perfektionierte er auch seine Kenntnis der irischen Sprache und hrte Lehrveranstaltungen in Geschichte. Eine schwere Lungenkrankheit, die ihn beinahe das Leben gekostet htte, zwang ihn zu einer Unterbrechung der Studien. Wieder genesen, setzte er sie in Wexford fort. Das Stdtchen erwies sich aufgrund seiner Meerlage gesundheitlich vorteilhafter fr ihn; dort wurde er auch am 6. Juni 1948 fr die Dizese Armagh zum Priester geweiht. Weiterfhrende Studien fhrten Tmas Fiaich zunchst an das University College Dublin, wo er 1950 einen Abschlu in frher und mittelalterlicher irischer Geschichte erwarb, dann an die Universitt Lwen in Belgien. Hier verbesserte er seine Kenntnisse ber die Wirkungsgeschichte des irischen Mnchtums in Europa und schlo 1952 mit dem Lizenziat in Geschichte ab. - Sein profundes Wissen um die irische Sprache und Geschichte sowie die kontinentale Bedeutung des irischen Mnchtums bescherten ihm schon 1953 einen Lehrauftrag fr Neue Geschichte am St. Patrick's College Maynooth, den er dann ab 1959 als ordentlicher Professor ausbte. Seit 1954 war er Herausgeber einer lokalgeschichtlichen Zeitschrift der Dizese Armagh, des "Seanchas Ard Mhacha", worin auch die meisten seiner eigenen Arbeiten verffentlicht wurden. Ab 1970 war Fiaich, der teils die irische, teils die englische Version seines Namens benutzte, im Vorstand der Universitt. 1974 stieg er zu ihrem Prsidenten auf. - berraschend kam fr viele die Berufung Fiaichs auf den erzbischflichen Stuhl von Armagh, nachdem Kardinal Conway im Frhjahr 1977 verstorben war. Man hatte erwartet, da einer der anderen Bischfe den Stuhl St. Patricks in Armagh erhalten wrde. Stattdessen erhielt Fiaich diese wichtigste Kathedra Irlands und wurde so der erste Erzbischof seit dem 17. Jahrhundert, der selbst aus Grafschaft und Bistum Armagh stammte. Als Wappenspruch whlte Fiaich sich "Fratres in unum", und noch vor der Bischofsweihe am 2. Oktober 1977 lie er verlauten, da die irische Namensform, Toms Fiaich, whrend seines Pontifikats offiziell zu benutzen sei. Die Tatsache, da Fiaich bisher ausschlielich in der Wissenschaft ttig gewesen

war, stellte fr ihn kein Hindernis fr sein neues Amt dar, war er doch von Natur aus ein geselliger Mensch, der es verstand, auch die einfachen Leute anzusprechen. Seine auerordentliche Fhigkeit, sich Namen und Familienzusammenhnge einzuprgen und bei einer Begegnung ins Gesprch einzubringen, erleichterte den Wechsel vom Professor zum Seelsorger enorm. Selbst als Kardinal verzichtete er des fteren auf die Klerikertracht, und wenn er sich im Urlaub befand, war er durchaus auch in Hemdsrmeln anzutreffen. Auch wenn der glhende Patriot Fiaich zu Beginn seines Pontifikats erklrt hatte, er wolle kein "politischer Primas" sein, so gab er doch freimtig zu, er sehe dem Tag eines vereinigten Irland mit Freude entgegen, selbst wenn er ihn nicht mehr erleben werde. In der aufgeheizten Situation in Nordirland bargen solche uerungen nicht geringen Zndstoff. Als republikanische Gefangene in einem nordirischen Hochsicherheitsgefngnis 1981 in den Hungerstreik traten, um auf ihre schlechten Haftbedingungen aufmerksam zu machen, besuchte Fiaich die Streikenden und rief die britische Regierung zum Nachgeben in der so genannten H-Block-Kontroverse auf. Auch wenn Fiaichs Verhalten im Nordirlandkonflikt und seine offene Sympathie fr das republikanische Anliegen teilweise als unsensibel und von radikal-unionistischer Seite gar als provokativ bezeichnet wurde, so lie der Erzbischof, der 1979 von Papst Johannes Paul II. zum Kardinal kreiert worden war, keinen Zweifel an seiner Absage an die IRA: "Es ist unser Schicksal dieses Land mit unseren protestantischen Nachbarn und Brdern zu teilen. Also lat es uns nicht teilen in Auseinandersetzung und Rivalitt, sondern als Brder und Schwestern unter unserem gemeinsamen Vater." - Theologisch fhrte Fiaich den konservativen Kurs seines Vorgngers Conway fort. In seine Amtszeit fielen zwei Referenden ber Scheidung und Abtreibung, bei denen er - im ersten Fall vergeblich, im zweiten erfolgreich - fr die Beibehaltung des Status Quo warb. Fiaich starb unerwartet am 7. Mai 1990 in Toulouse, whrend er sich auf einer Bistumswallfahrt nach Lourdes befand. - Toms Fiaich galt als Experte auf dem Gebiet der Wirkungsgeschichte des irischen Mnchtums in Europa. Seine Publikationen berhren jedoch praktisch alle Epochen der irischen Kirchengeschichte. Auerdem war er ein profunder Kenner der irischen Sprache.
