Reading Comprehension

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
Last Spring my wife suggested that I call in a man to look at our
lawn-mower. It had broken down the previous summer, and though I promised to
repair it, I have never got round to it. I would hear of suggestion and said that I
would fix it myself. One Saturday afternoon I hauled the machine into the garden
and had a close look at it. As far as I could see, it only needed a minor adjustment:
a turn of a screw here, a little tightening up there, a drop of oil and it would be as
good as new. Inevitably the repair job was not quite so simple. The mower firmly
refused to mow, so I decided to dismantle it and did so.
The weeks passed and the grass grew. When my wife nagged me to
do something about it, I told her that either I would have to buy a new mower or
let the grass grow. Needless to say that our house is now surrounded by a jungle.
Buried somewhere in deep grass, there is a rusting lawn-mower which I have
promised to repair one day.

1. When did the lawn-mower stop working?

2. ‘I would fix it myself’. Why did the writer think so?
3. Why did the grass grow so much?
4. Where is his lawn mower now?
5. What was his wife’s suggestion?

2. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
The healing powers of plants were demonstrated to me when I was
a boy of about ten. I had developed an acute persistent abdominal pain that did not
respond readily to hospital medication. In total desperation my mother took me to
Egya Mensa, a well-known herbalist in my home-town in the western province of
Ghana. He had earned the reputation of offering excellent help when they were
confronted with difficult cases where western medicine had failed to effect a cure.
Over the years I have come to distinguish three types of medicinal
practitioners in African Societies. The first is the herbalist, who generally enjoys
the prestige and reputation being the real traditional medical professional. The
second group represents the divine healers. Thirdly the witch-doctor, who is
credited with ability to intercept the evil deeds of a witch.
All three kinds of practitioners have managed to keep the rural and
urban populations in reasonable health. They have done well by relying on herbs
for actual treatment.
1. Why was the author taken to Egya Mensa?
2. How did Egya Mensa become a renowned herbalist?
3. How do witch-doctors treat their patients?
4. What do the three types of medicinal practitioners rely on?
5. What is the status of traditional medicinal practitioners in African
culture?

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
It is said that in modern age, newspapers are the greatest power. It
is not only for daily news that we should read newspapers but also to increase our
information and general knowledge. A person who does not know what is going
on around him or in other parts of the world is like the frog confined to a well.
There are good newspapers as well as bad newspapers. We should avoid reading
bad newspapers as they indulge in giving only sensational and often untrue
reports. We should not support newspapers which try to incite communal friction.
Therefore, instead of picking up cheap newspapers we should read standard,
impartial newspapers.

1. Why should we read newspapers?

2. Who is like the frog in a well?
3. Why should we not read bad newspapers?
4. Why should we go for impartial papers?
5. What is powerful in this modern age? Why?

4. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
Some years ago an expert on automation, Sir Leon Bagrit said that
in the future, computers would be developed which would be small enough to
carry in the pocket. Ordinary people would then be able to use them to obtain
valuable information. Computers could be plugged into a national network and be
used like radios. For instance, people going on holiday could be informed about
weather conditions; car drivers can be given alternative routes when there are
traffic jams. It will also be possible to make tiny translating machines. It is
impossible to assess the importance of a machine of this sort, for many
international misunderstandings are caused simply through our failure to
understand each other. Thus, computers are the most efficient servants man has
ever had and there is no limit to the way they can be used to improve our lives.

1. What could be the development in the field of computers?

2. What are the advantages of a computer plugging into a national
network?
