2 Million Trees Project

Brisbane City Council is committed to planting two million trees across Brisbane by 2012. This is being done through large scale bushland restoration, revegetation of landfill sites, street tree plantings and greening infrastructure sites. There have been many wonderful Community Tree Planting days throughout the McDowall ward with the community coming together to help plant trees in our local streets and park areas. With the help of our local community we have been able to plant hundreds of trees right across the ward in Everton Park, Stafford Heights and Bridgeman Downs to name a few. By planting trees we are protecting Brisbanes flora and fauna, making Brisbane greener, cleaner and cooler, with healthier waterways. We are protecting the preservation of Brisbanes subtropical character and outdoor lifestyle and securing an environmental legacy to sustain Brisbane's future.

Bushland Preservation
.This Council Administration is committed to preserving bushland throughout Brisbane and is currently purchasing 500 hectares of land with significant environmental quality for the purpose of conservation and preservation. This is how the Bushland Levy is being used, in the acquisition of quality natural areas to protect Brisbanes green and sustainable environment. Council preserves land with high ecological value to protect biodiversity and encourage sustainability. Councils large conservation reserve network runs throughout Brisbane and is home to diverse wildlife and rich flora. Brisbanes urban habitat is intertwined with green areas of high ecological value, making Brisbane a clean and environmentally friendly living space.

100% Green Power

All of Brisbane City Council's electricity purchases are renewable and certified under the GreenPower scheme. This means there are no emissions from Council's electricity use.

Renewable Energy Project

Currently Council purchases GreenPower as the most cost-effective means of meeting its renewable energy target. The Renewable Energy Project proposes an alternative to this process, where Council commits to a long term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for its renewable energy needs. A key requirement of the PPA is that the renewable energy is generated within South East Queensland, which will help fast-track the construction of a renewable energy plan in the region. Advantages of this approach are:

greater price certainty for Council's electricity and renewable energy needs enhanced economic growth in the region

Methane gas conversion

Council is turning methane, a greenhouse gas from landfill sites and wastewater treatment plants, into clean energy. At the Fitzgibbon, Chandler and Rochedale landfill sites, decomposing waste is turned into methane gas. This 'waste' methane drives a combustion engine, which powers a generator and creates clean electricity. This reduces electricity consumption and also lowers the greenhouse emissions impact.

Clean Up Australia Day

Brisbane City Council has been involved in the nationwide Clean Up Australia Day for the past 20 years and works with Clean Up Australia to ensure Brisbane residents have a great experience cleaning up their local area. This year there were 503 sites registered in Brisbane with over 23,000 volunteers in total including schools and businesses.
