Sometimes, low-tech solar devices are much better than high-tech ones for home use, as they not only tend to be cheaper to make, but will also last much longer before any repairs or maintenance are necessary.

And even better, they can be built in part from repurposed or recycled components, which is something you dont see very often in new solar devices.

This solar space heater design uses old soda cans to increase the surface area for heat transfer inside of it, and in its most basic design, uses no external power to move the air.

Double-glazed glass or polycarbonate panels make up the front of the device, allowing the suns rays to enter it while restricting heat loss to the outside air, and the box is also insulated for more efficiency.

When exposed to the sun, the air inside the solar heater begins to warm, and as it does, it rises to the top of the box and can be ported directly into the house.

For more control over the system, small fans and thermostats can be added, added, so that warm air enters the house only after the temperature reaches a desired range, and installing adjustable air registers at the outlet lets the system appear almost invisible from inside the living space.

Andrew Trachtman Ursinus College The only way I could even remotely see it running anything at all would take a lot more effort and you'd probably put in more money making it than you would ever get back. Since it takes heat, I would imagine trying to use it to generate steam might be almost viable since the steam could be used to produce energy. Personal opinion though, I might be thinking too low tech here, though a fair number of power generators in some way go back to steam. Andrew Trachtman you could conduct the pipe to a straight upward pipe with small computer fans in them, fans can be used for power generation too if wired differently, so 10 in sequence, it would probably generate some eletricity too, and its quite hard to generate steam of the sun, you would probably have to use a lens to focus the energy on one spot to generate enough heat there, but since u generate steam u need a nice pressurised chamber too, and for that you will need a thicker wall, and if u have a thicker wall, it would conduct energy way slower then such a thin aluminium can :) steam would be no idea for this diy idea :P Reply Like October 9 at 12:37am View 1 more Justine Bradley Works at Australian Music and Entertainment Scene thanks David that is a great idea...now to find someone who drinks from aluminium cans!
