Design
Design The vacuum circuit-breaker HVX follows the proven principle of insulator-type switch design, meaning that the pole section is fastened to the drive housing in two places. The multifunctionally designed pole section not only serves as an insulator between the poles and to the ground, but also incorporates all support and protection functions.

Components
Description The new vacuum circuit-breaker generation has optimised drive kinematics thanks to the use of state-ofart vacuum interrupters. Method of operation: The energy for a complete operating cycle can be stored in the helical spring. Cam discs control the closing and opening movements of the vacuum interrupters. After closing, the spring charging can be continued, which saves the energy for a complete auto-reclosing cycle.
Drive unit Essential features Single-shaft system with single helical spring for closing (ON) and opening (OFF) Optimum adaptation to the small contact travel of the vacuum interrupters Minimum energy reqirement
The drive is supplied in both standard models as hand-operated spring mechanism FH 2-01 or as motorised spring mechanism FK 2-01. Appropriate interlocks preclude faulty operation. Besides the local mechanical actuation of the tripping elements by hand, electric remote control or primary relay actuation of the drives is also possible.
Manual charging of spring drive with crank Approximately 15 revolutions are required for one switching cycle C0.

Pole section The supporting component of the complete pole section is the pole housing of multifunction design. It serves amongst other things as a mechanical support for the upper and lower terminal contacts which support the vacuum interrupter free from mechanical stress. There are thus no bridges of insulating material between the phases. We were able to minimise the number of single parts by integrating a large number of functions in the pole housing.

Description of secondary equipment Releases Auxiliary release (Shunt release) The solenoid of the auxiliary release is excited via auxiliary energy supply and tripping contact can be initiated by hand, via an independent switch, an overcurrent release or an undervoltage release. When connected to A.C. supply, the coil is supplied with voltage via a rectifier installed in the drive housing. After tripping has been accomplished, the solenoid is de-energised. Indirect overcurrent release (CT operated) Indirect overcurrent releases are used to trip switching devices automatically in case of short-circuits and overcurrent. When the protective system reacts, the release is excited by the transformer current, causing the switch to be tripped. These releases are supplied for transformer secondary currents of 0.5 A, 1 A and 5 A. Under-voltage release Under-voltage releases are permanently applied to auxiliary voltage. When the auxiliary circuit is interrupted or the voltage drops excessively, the switching device is tripped without delay.
Auxiliary switches Auxiliary switches Auxiliary switches are always actuated directly from the switch shaft via a linkage, i.e. their position always coincides with that of the main contacts. Circuit-breakers are equipped with an 8-pole auxiliary switch. Additional auxiliary switches can be fitted on request.
Relays Anti-pumping relays If the circuit-breaker is constantly subject to simultaneous ON and OFF commands, it will return to its OFF position after being switched ON. It remains in this OFF position until the ON command is issued anew. This prevents the switch from being continually switched ON and OFF (=pumping).
Electronic pulse stretcher The electronic pulse stretcher, type C27 900, extends the impulse duration to 50 ms and offers the following advantages: - suitable for wiper contact impulse signals > 1 ms - independent of input voltage, i.e. 24 V 240 V AC/DC - independent of climatic and environmental influences - constant reproduction of wiping impulse - potential-free wiping impulse - easy retrofitting, i.e. no intervention in the circuit-breakers mechanical system
Operations counter To count the number of operations of the breaker, a counter has been integrated. The service life or the service cycles can be determined based on the number of operation cycles.
Push switches The p.s. are snap-action switches which are mounted to the drive. Push switches are actuated by cams or various other elements and are therefore not positively depending on the position of the switching device. They are wired up to the terminal strip or on request supplied with a connector (with plug and socket). Coding with pins in the LV connector prevents racking in and closing in panels where it is not intended for, e.g. because of small current carrying capacity.

Applications Rated short-circuit-breaking current and part-load currents To determine the switching capacity of the various circuit-breaker types, extensive switching test series were performed in high-capacity test laboratories in Germany and abroad. The tests not only focused on registration of the breaking current and the recovery voltage by oscillographs, but also on determination of other essential physical data, such as arc power, arc voltage and time-way diagrams. These data give access to extensive findings as regards optimum dimensioning or continuous technical improvements.

If contact separation in case of short-circuit in a circuit-breaker is effected during the decaying DC component of the initial symmetrical short-circuit current, the switching device must withstand a current whose peak value is increased by the value of the DC component as shown in the diagrams on the left. Alternating currents with a DC component impose a higher load on the interrupting chambers. The suitability was proven in the case of switches with short opening times in the scope of particular tests.
dead time of 0.2 to 0.3 sec. Our switches allow such short dead times between opening and closing, meaning that system operation is practically not affected. If the shortcircuit is still on when the system is switched ON again, it is finally eliminated by a subsequent breaking operation. Due to vacuum being used as dielectric, the vacuum circuit-breaker enables performing an essentially higher number of switching operations in quick succession than in the case of all the other switching principles which are being used at present.

Switching of unloaded cables and overhead lines In case of short circuits to ground, isolated neutral systems may feature 1.4 times the phase recovery voltage in the initial quenching phase, besides the physical processes which are in principle identical to those for single capacitors.
A very large number of system disturbances are short-circuits due to an arc on overhead lines, as may be caused by thunderstorms, storms or animals, for example. Such disturbances are mostly transitory and after switching off the short-circuit current, they feature a quick dielectric recovery so that the system can be switched ON again after a

Switching under phase opposition conditions The conditions within the system which on principle prevail during phase opposition are shown in the single-pole block diagram. The recovery voltage is particularly high due to the asynchronous voltage characteristic of the two power supply units.
Switching of capacitances (no-load operation of cables and overhead lines) W U i UC L C t Peak value of the recovery voltage Rated voltage Breaking current of overhead lines or cables Voltage over cable capacitance Inductance Capacitance of overhead line or cable Time
Switching of off-load transformers The chopped current is very low (3 to 5 A), due to the materials selected for our circuit-breakers. The overvoltages to be expected on switching off-load transformers are below the values which can occur with switches following other principles; thus, overvoltage limitation measures are normally not necessary.

Switching off short-circuit currents with very high initial rates of rise of the transient recovery voltage When switching off short-circuit currents with the fault location directly downstream of high inductances (e.g. transformers), the initial rates of rise of the transient recovery voltage may substantially exceed the values specified by DIN VDE 0670 or IEC 60056. On breaking, rates of rise of several kV/s may occur. Mastering extremely high rates of rise under transient conditions is one of the vacuum circuit-breakers special feature.
Switching of motors and inductances with air gap When switching off low-power highvoltage motors while starting up or at standstill, switching surges occur due to the single-phase chopping procedure which is specific for vacuum circuit-breakers. Due to the operating principle of vacuum circuit-breakers, irrespective of type or
brand, all must be provided with a surge voltage protection via the ZnO surge arresters which are particularly suited for such cases.
13
Standards The HVX vacuum circuit-breakers meet the following standards: - IEC 60 056 - IEC 60 694 - EN 60 056 - EN 60 694
Tests Vacuum circuit-breakers have proved their value in extensive testing series in the type testing process according to the applicable standards and during development. The tests were performed in internal high-capacity test laboratories and in neutral institutions, such as IPH and KEMA. The switching devices reliability, operating safety and mechanical function was subjected to continuous tests.

Insulating level (tested according to IEC 60 694 or EN 60 694) HVX vacuum circuit-breakers are suited for installation at high altitudes. They can be used in buildings with a low thermal insulation or low thermal capacity, with heating or cooling, without temperature monitoring. The heating or cooling may fail over several days. The specified insulating level values are referred to sea level (altitude: 0 m). In case of installation higher than 1000 m, the reduction of the insulation level must be taken into consideration via the altitude correction factor (ka = correction factor).
Thus, the following applies for the selection of devices and switchgear: Rated withstand voltage to be selected 1) Required rated withstand voltage 1) ka It is however intended to determine the real insulation level at the place of installation - the withstand voltage -, the reduction of the insulation level from the altitude of 0 m must be taken into account as follows: Withstand voltage 2) = ka rated withstand voltage of the device chosen. The following definition is made: Rated....withstand voltage 1) = rated value according to VDE, IEC etc. referred to sea level. ....withstand voltage 2) = real value at the altitude in question. Altitude correction factor ka according to IEC 60 694 or EN 60 694.
