Ren Magritte

When one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, 'What does that mean?'. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.

[Early Years]
He followed Impressionism, Futurism and cubism, the movements popular at that time.

1898 His mom commited suicide by drowning herself in the river. This is said to affect his painting style later in his works. 1915 Attended the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. 1918

[Surrealism Paris Years]

Rather than following previous movements, his art work began to reflect his ideas. Signed contract with Galerie la Centaure and began career as full-time artist. First exhibition held in Brussels. It was a flop. Depressed by the failure, he and his wife moved to Paris and he became involved in the surrealism group.
