Stage: One Rationale: This lesson concludes the planting of a bean experiment which started 4 weeks earlier.

Children will learn how to conclude a scientific method. Outcomes and Indicators: Old syllabus: Outcome: (Earth and its surroundings) - ES S1.6 Identifies and describes ways in which people and other living things depend on earth and its environment. Indicator:
-

observes, asks questions and records what happens to plants when they are deprived of a requirement, eg water, air, sunlight and nutrients.

Outcome: (living things) LT S1.3 - identifies and describes ways in which living things grow and change. Indicator:
-

measures and records, over a four week period, the length of bean plants using informal units.

Learning process outcome: Using technology - UT S1.9 - Selects and uses a range of equipment, computer based technology, materials and other resources to undertake an investigation or design task. Indicator:
-

with teacher assistance, downloads images from a digital camera for publication (Board of Studies NSW, 2006).

New syllabus Outcome: (living world): describes external features, changes in and growth of living things ST1-10LW Indicator: record the changes in growth of a common plant or animal, using informal units, provided tables and digital technologies as appropriate. Observe and record some of the changes a common plant or animal shows during its life, using and appropriate digital technology (Board of Studies NSW, 2012). Link to Other KLAs: English

Key Scientific Knowledge [KSK]: In order for plants to grow they need soil, sunlight, oxygen and water (The hidden villa classroom, 2010). To conclude an experiment you need to discuss if your prediction was correct and what new knowledge has come about. Prior Learning: The children would have learnt what a hypothesis is and would have made predictions. List of Resources: Lesson Overview: 1. Firstly the teacher will explain to the children that they will observe their plant for the last time. 2. The teacher will tell the children to go and take a photo and record the final result of their experiment in the books. 3. With assistance the photo will be printed and pasted on each childs poster. 4. There will be a class discussion about what the children have learnt. Questions the teacher will ask are was your hypothesis correct? What did you learn about plants and what they need to grow? Discuss that plants need oxygen, sunlight, soil and water. These questions will be written on the board. 5. The children will then engage in an interactive smart board game relating to what happens to plants when they are deprived of something needed to grow. The poster will have the photos of their plants over the 4 week period. 7. The teacher will explain how to write a conclusion to their experiment. 8. The children will then be told to write a conclusion in their science books with the questions still on the board to guide them. Modifications Support: for children who are having trouble writing up their conclusion, their partner in the experiment can assist them. Digital camera Poster Glue Scissors Science books
