Timber Framing Defined

P B

rior to 1840 all structures on the National Register were timber frame construction, a process in which timbers are cut, joined, braced & fastened with

wooden pegs to form an interlocking of beams. This type of construction was born out of necessity. Our forefathers utilized the resources available to build a home long ago, they felled the trees, hewed the timbers & joined them with a mortise & tenon & trunnels. It was a perfect union of resources & energy. asic joining techniques, such as the mortise & tenon, evolved between 200 & 500 B. C. in Japan & Europe. The process has been refined over the centuries &

adapted to modern living. This age old process creates an infrastructure that is timeless in design, but may be fashioned to suit contemporary sensibilities. Timber framing is quality construction that will maintain its beauty & strength for generations to come.

ften potential owners begin collecting items for use in their home even before construction begins. I recommend that potential home builders, who may have

just the beginning of ideas for their home, not collect a hodgepodge of stuff, but rather collect hardware, stone, brick, slate, marble for their home these things will last while they continue to develop ideas & plans for their dream home.

oday, far too many people have lost the capacity to dream. From our perspective, we must identify the dreamers with the wherewithal to make a plan. While they

may not be ready to break ground today, starting the process takes them a step closer. We will still be here when theyre ready, whether its five years or ten years from now.

Dreaming Creek raised this 18,000 square foot timber frame combination barn ~ guest lodge in upstate New York. The challenge? To complete this spectacular structure within the clients limited time frame.

The complexity of the frame, along with gathering the necessary timbers for a project of this magnitude, combined with the distressing application applied to each individual timber put Dreaming Creeks team to the ultimate timber frame test.

Community involvement was essential for the raising of early timber frames. Modern technology may have diminished the necessity of hand raising, but many still choose to hand raise portions of their project to capture the spirit of teamwork.

Before the bents were raised, church members and crew alike inscribed thoughts, messages and prayers on the timbers so they could become a permanent part of the structure

This team building exercise brought together an entire Utah church community of 275 who helped the Dreaming Creek crew raise their church bent by bent.

B ILOXI , M ISSISSIPPI

August, 2003 found one of Dreaming Creeks crews on site halfway between Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi. The jobsite for this waterfront project was on a creek leading into an area called Big Lake, a part of the Back Bay of Biloxi.

Dreaming Creek designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed, a heavy timber frame structure to this home on the waters edge.

The addition was a twostory structure ~ the first floor featured a two-story great room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, wet bar, and bath; the second floor contained a large master bedroom, bath, walk-in closet, & computer room.

The exterior of the addition was sheathed in structural insulated panels. The addition was designed and engineered to withstand wind conditions as high as a Category 3 hurricane.

The project was an addition to an existing home & was built on pilings. The extra heavy pilings as well as galvanized steel I-beams supported the structure from below.

August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina slammed into Biloxi, MS as a devastating Category 3 storm. As news of the horrible destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, began to come in, everyone at Dreaming Creek was concerned about the well-being of our clients. We sent them an e-mail and received the following message a couple of days later with a description of the damage they sustained as well as the photos on these two pages.

[...thanks for the note, say hello to everyone involved in my project for us. Unfortunately, the old house that we attached the timber frame to is completely gone to the slab (above). Fortunately the timber frame is still standing but gutted on the first floor... The master bedroom (right) and master bath came through all right as did the two decks on the back of the house.]

[We had a 25' storm surge come through at our location along with the 145 mph winds. Also, the frame outside of the master bedroom has been open to the weather for a month now]

[I am only one of three houses out of 50 along the water that has anything still standing and the only one that will be able to rebuild. All of the houses on my cul-de-sac are only slabs] Dreaming Creek responded first by establishing our Chief Operating Officer, as the main point of contact for the client. All requests for assistance are sent to him and he assigns the appropriate Dreaming Creek team members to respond to the requests.

Word of the needs also went to the Dreaming Creeks consulting timber frame engineer who has offered his assistance in re-evaluating any engineering questions that may become necessary. Our beamery is ready to fabricate any timbers that may be needed in getting the project back into shape for the client. Bob Shortridge, our founder and president, has coordinated with the owners to visit the building site to offer his assistance in evaluating the structure.

We are proud of our company and our products and know that this example stands as a testimony to the strength and beauty of timber frame construction. More importantly, it stands as an example of doing the right thing in a time of crisis. And for that we are most proud.

TIMBER FRAMING

A. Timber Species: Douglas fir, White Oak, or Southern Yellow Pine at Fabricator's option.
NOTE: Or use a specific species or a blend of woods. We also have available most wood species that are conducive to timber framework. Black Walnut, Cherry, Cypress, Cedar, and Hickory are among the most popular. Talk with Dreaming Creek about other timber species options that are suitable with timber framing.)

B. Timber Grade: For the species used, comply with following grade (or grades if more than one specified at Fabricator's option), for beams, stringers, posts and other members as shown: C. Moisture Content: No minimum moisture content applies
(NOTE: Very often, the timber moisture content should not be an issue, as traditional timber framing allows green timbers. If you use either Douglas fir or SYP for the project, limiting moisture to 19 % is often acceptable. For other wood species, higher moisture content are acceptable as most other timber species cannot be kiln dried. If the project is for dry, arid climates, or timber to glass connections are required, lower moisture content timbers may be needed. Contact Dreaming Creek for Details.) WWPA Grade: No. 2 V (stress rated or betterminimum) SPIB Grade: No. 2 SR (stress rated or better - minimum)

D. Dressing: Provide timber, which has been dressed on 4 sides at mill, prior to grading. Comply with grade sizes.

E. End Seal: Manufacturer's standard transparent colorless wood sealer, which is effective in retarding the transmission of moisture at cross-grain cuts. F. Penetrating Sealer: Manufacturer's standard translucent penetrating wood sealer, which will not interfere with application of wood stain, transparent finish or paint finish as indicated for the work.

(NOTE: Generally the S4S nominal timber size is " undersized from the full dimension, and does not sync to Kiln Dried lumber dimensions, I.E: A S4S 14" timber would be 13-.)

G. Connectors, Anchors, and Accessories: Fabricate from structural-steel shapes, plates, and bars complying with ASTM A 36, steel bars complying with ASTM A 575, and hot-rolled steel sheet complying with ASTM A 570. Hot-dip galvanize each assembly and fastener after fabrication to comply with ASTM A 123 or ASTM A 153. 2.03 SOLID WOOD DECKING A. Grade for Solid Wood Roof Decking: Where standard tongued-and-grooved or double tongued-and-grooved roof decking of solid wood (not laminated) is indicated, provide the following grade of units, of the pattern indicated, in required species:

87
Grade: (Specify Grade requirements)

A. Moisture Content: Except as otherwise indicated, provide wood decking fabricated from lumber of 19% moisture content or better. B. Pattern and Dressing, Solid Matched Decking: Standard pattern of the type indicated, surfaced on top and bottom. C. Fasteners: Provide nail size, type, and at locations recommended by AITC for the thickness and type deck used. 2.04 FABRICATION, TIMBER FRAMING A. Design of Members: Member sizes and shapes as shown shall be based on specified allowable stresses, and loadings required under the your local Building Code. Architect will be sole judge of whether requested modifications result in equivalent strengths.
B. Camber: Fabricate horizontal and inclined members (units of less than 12/12 slope) with natural convex bow (crown) up, so as to provide camber in the work. C. Fabricate members by cutting and restoring exposed surfaces to match specified surfacing. Predrilled for fasteners and assembly of units wherever feasible. D. Machine finish exposed surfaces to remove planing chatter or surfacing marks. E. Shop Fabrication: Where treatment of timberwork is indicated, fabricate members (cutting, drilling, surfacing and sanding) prior to treatment, to the greatest extent possible. F. End-Cut Sealing: Immediately after end-cutting each member to final length, and after wood treatment (if any), apply a saturation coat of end sealer to ends and other cross-cut surfaces, keeping surfaces 'flood-coated' for not less than 10 minutes. G. Seal Coat: After complete fabrication and surfacing of each unit and end-cut sealing, apply saturation coat of penetrating sealer on surfaces of each unit, except for treated wood where the treatment has included a water repellent. (NOTE: Air or kiln dried material may be required depending on application and use).

2.05 FABRICATION, WOOD DECKING

Heavy Timber Truss Designs

F O R U S E W I T H C O N V E N T I O N A L B U I L D I N G S YST E M S
Timber Frame residential and commercial projects have typically focused on an all-ornothing approach. Dreaming Creek provides heavy timber trusses specifically designed to be used in conjunction with conventional building materials. This hybrid approach opens up a world of possibilities for both new construction and addition projects. Beautiful exposed timbers and soaring spaces can now create unique features that will add distinction to any building project. Even our simple truss design can add a grand touch to any home or addition project. Consider the visual impact of exposed timbers in sizes ranging from 6 by 10 inch to 10 by 16 inch and larger. Refer to the photographs on our web site for a visual representation. Dreaming Creek uses traditional timber frame joinery techniques. This centuries old construction practice uses wooden pegs to secure the timber joints. If, by design, steel fasteners are required, they are generally concealed within the timbers leaving no exposed metal to detract from the woods natural beauty. The only standard exception to hidden steel is when we need to use a steel tension rod to offset horizontal thrust. Even then, the steel can be an attractive feature. All wood members are always pre-fitted at our beamery to insure joinery accuracy. When overall size allows, the trusses are shipped pre-assembled, for quick on-site erection. If a truss must be shipped disassembled, we provide predrilled holes for trunnel installation. Trunnels are oak pegs or tree nails. A finish of tung oil is normally applied as the final step before shipment. These timber frame products can be used for both interior and exterior enhancements to any structure. When using timber for exterior usage, a wood suitable for weather exposure should be used. Good choices in natural woods include White Oak, Cypress, and Cedar. Additionally, we can have exterior timbers pressure-treated for added protection. Ridge purlins are timber pieces that fit between the trusses and are located at the very peak of the roof. The ridge purlin can facilitate construction of conventional roof systems built over the truss. The ridge purlin is required for use with structural panel roof applications. In addition to just providing trusses, we also can create a traditional timber frame for an accent room. This would usually include floor to ceiling posts, connecting girts, intermediate purlins and more. We can work with existing floor plans or create something unique with our custom design services.

TRUSS DESCRIPTIONS
SIMPLE TRUSS/QUEEN POST/KING POST These truss designs all utilize the basic triangle approach to truss framing. Bottom chords are continuous, with top chords rafters set to the required pitch of the roof line. The King Post type truss design is especially suited to both lower pitches and long spans. Because of the typical continuous bottom chord requirement, maximum span is about 46 feet. SCISSORS TRUSS The Scissors truss is an economical design and can free-span large spaces. Weve designed a Scissors Truss that will span more than 70 feet. Scissors truss designs
DREAMING CREEK ARCHITECTURAL BINDER 2010

142

TRADITIONAL & BARREL HAMMER BEAM TRUSS The traditional 2-step and 3-step Hammer Beam truss creates an elegant, spacious interior image for areas such as great rooms, master suites, family rooms, gathering rooms and the like. No center support posts are required. These trusses feature O-gee end profiles on the hammer beam, pendant options on the hammer post as well as gun stocking of the supporting posts and full chamfering of the entire truss.
The Barrel Hammer Beam truss uses curved braces to create a unique interior image. The curves are often designed to echo half round and elliptical window elements or used alone to accent specific interior area. *In addition to the illustrated trusses, other variations are often done! If you have a unique idea or have found a design that you like, give us a call.

WOOD SPECIES When selecting a wood species, there are many quality species that work well with timber framing.
Standard Choices Are: Oak & Southern Yellow Pine Wood Species Upgrades Include: Douglas Fir, Cherry, Walnut, Redwood, Cypress, and Cedar, just to name a few

SPANS & SPACING Span limitsor the overall length of the truss, is determined by many factors. Snow and wind loads, specific truss style, pitch of the roof, timber sizes and other conditions all play a part. Truss styles with continuous bottom chords are usually limited by the maximum timber length that a sawmill can actually produce. Usually this is about 45 feet, but there are exceptions even to this rule. Other truss designs such as the Hammer Beam and Scissors Truss can span distances up to 70 feet. Spacingor the distance between each truss, again depends on the same factors mentioned above. Normally, on-center truss spacing of 4,6,8,12,16 feet and beyond are common-place. Keep in mind that the further apart the trusses are placed from one another, the more roof load each truss must carry. Therefore, the individual timber sizes of the truss must be increased to gain the required strength to carry the additional roof load. Call us for your specific requirements. OPTIONS TO CONSIDER
