Career Portal Opens Opportunities
Selkirk College is flled with students possessing the tal-
ents and skills needed in todays workforce. A new college
online service now makes it easier for employers to con-
nect with this deep pool of future employees.
Te Co-Op Education & Employment Services (CEES)
branch of Selkirk College launched the Career Portal ear-
lier this year to help students and recent graduates search
for jobs and employers to fnd the skilled individuals they
are seeking.
Te online career portal makes connecting students
and employers easy, says Brenda Smith, manager of
CEES. Te way employers are hiring and students are
searching for work has changed. Te online career portal
makes the hiring connection between student and em-
ployer much more ef cient. Tis is really an exciting step
for the college.
It took two years to implement the portal that can be
found on the Selkirk College website (selkirk.ca). Te
portal was launched as a pilot project with Selkirk co-op
education students in February. Now fully operational
and open to all students, so far 343 jobs have been posted
and more than 450 people have viewed jobs posted in the
last 30 days.
We knew there was a real need for this service, says
Smith. At Selkirk College we provide applied learning
opportunities for students and the next step is having
those students fnd related jobs. By facilitating the hiring
process, Selkirk students are fnding success in entering
the job market.
Te portal is one way Selkirk College is furthering its
strategic vision in preparing students for work and pro-
viding a skilled workforce as an integral component for
the sustainability of the communities it serves.
We have all been reading a lot about the impending
skills shortage, says Cathy Mercer, Selkirk Colleges Dir-
ector of Student and Enrollment Services. With more
than 60 relevant programs, students can study in areas
that suit their interest and when it comes time for them
to enter the workforce our new career portal has proven
itself efective in making the hiring connection between
student and employer.
When students visit the site, the portal connects them
to job postings and allows them to directly upload their
resume and cover letter to employers. With a personal-
ized student number, the portal helps keep track of the
jobs applied for and interviews secured.
Part of the employment challenge students face is
that there are actually too many places to seek jobs, says
Smith. Starting with this portal, there will be jobs related
to their felds of studies. It provides a relevant job search
for our students.
Employers who use the portal are provided access to
the site where they can directly upload job postings. Tey
then receive access to the applicants resume and cover
letter as they respond to the posting.
We really want to make sure that local employers know
about this service, Smith says of the portal. We see that
the portal is quickly becoming the fastest and best way to
connect our students to jobs. It is the employment hub.
Sekirks online career portal has teamed up with the
Going Global job search engine to provide international
work and internship opportunities for students. Tis is
another valued added for Selkirk students wishing to have
an international work experience. Trough the Going
Global database, more than 600,000 internships and job
listings are available daily from around the globe. Many
of these jobs are available for viewing via Selkirks online
career portal.
Jobs can range from a part-time electrical entry shop
helper in Castlegar to a full-time snow cat operator in
Calgary to a GIS technician in Hawaii.
Te location doesnt really matter as far as the portal
is concerned, says Smith. Its across Canada and inter-
nationally.
Te launch of the portal is part of a fve-year plan to
enhance employment services and support for Selkirk
students and graduates. Selkirks entry into this service
helps connect students and employers, making a signif-
cant contribution to the regional economy.
Selkirk Colleges CEES has been in existence for over
20 years and currently provides six core services: the
Co-op Education program, employment services, gradu-
ate services, aboriginal job opportunities, going global
internship and the TeckServ summer internship. Tis
fall, CEES is in the process of creating a physical space at
the Castlegar campus called the College to Career Centre
which will open in LLB-019 on November 14. Tis centre
will welcome current students, graduates, and potential
and existing employers.

Regional Household Hazardous
Waste Round-Ups A Huge Success
In September and October, residents of the RDCK and
RDCK Municipalities safely disposed of approximately
26,965 liters of hazardous liquids at fve HHW round-up
events held in Castlegar, Creston, Kaslo, Nakusp, and Nel-
son. Other miscellaneous items such as fre extinguish-
ers, mercury, lead and compressed gas cylinders totaling
2,987 kg were also collected at the events.
An additional 8,335 liters of paint, 1,034 kg of batteries,
4,800 kg of electronic waste and 821 kg of electrical ap
pliances were collected at no charge to the RDCK by the
Product Stewards.
Te results demonstrate that the residents of the
RDCK and Municipalities want to do the right thing and
dispose of hazardous materials safely. All the events were
very well attended and we are pleased with the volume
of materials that were collected. said Uli Wolf, General
Manager of Environmental Services. Te results strongly
demonstrate that improved services for Product Steward-
ship Programs is needed in the region.

petted. Merla is also very sweet, but tends to be more
outgoing and personable right away, compared to her
sister. You can always fnd her at the front of her kennel,
waiting to greet you and get some afection. Considering
that the girls are so close, we would love to see them go

October is the month of Halloween. The popular
holiday still unfortunately has an out-dated superstition
revolving around black cats. It is unfortunate to see lovely
little kitties being discriminated against because of the
colour of their fur, so we would like to break that ancient
folklore idea, and gently remind the public that black cats
are just as lovable as other coloured ones, and they are by
no means bad luck. Obviously at this time, we do need
to be diligent with our adoption applications for black
cats and kittens, as we want to ensure they will go to
homes where they will be loved and cared for their whole
lives, not adopted for other ulterior motives involving
Halloween activities.

Cola and Merla are two very sweet spayed sisters who came into the shelter on October 3,
2013. Their previous owner lost their housing, so the girls came to us to fnd their forever
home. While they are very similar physically, both girls being short haired black cats, their
personalities are very diferent. Cola is a quiet girl who generally lets her sister take the

Relay For Life Cancer Fundraiser
Fruitvale I.D.A Pharmacy is raising money for cancer

VISAC Gallery Exhibition
Stanley G. Triggs: Changes Upstream, opening Novem-
ber 1 at the VISAC Gallery in Trail, is an exhibit of black
and white photographs taken before and afer the con-
struction of the Libby Dam. It documents the dramatic
changes in the East Kootenay communities spread along
the Kootenay River just north of the International Border
between 1969 and 1972. Nelson-born photographer Stan-
ley G. Triggs is the former curator of the McCord Mu-
seum of Photography at McGill University. Te exhibit is
on loan from Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and
History.
Te exhibit runs until November 29. Admission is by
donation. Te Gallery is open Monday Wednesday, 10
am until 2 pm and Tursday Friday, 2 pm until 6 pm.

Camp Dinner Celebration
Come support a wild and free Jumbo Pass at a special

Te Whole Schools Exciting
Fundraising Progress
As the seasons change and we all bustle to get ready for
the winter, the parents, students and staf of Te Whole
School are still busy working hard to reach their up-
coming Build a Legacy fundraising goal. To date these
dedicated folks have already raised over $27,000 towards
the down payment needed to buy their school building.
Over $16,000 of these funds represent the huge eforts of
parents through garage sales, bakes sales and charitable
community donations. Te remaining amount represents
the generous community response from last springs Area
H - CBT Community Initiatives meeting and a signif-
cant contribution from the RDCK Community Develop-
ment Fund. While we are proud of our success so far, we
are committed to achieving our goal of $55,000 by next
spring. To this end, we are asking the community for their
continued support of upcoming events.
Everyone at the school is getting excited for our up-
coming annual Blue Moon Cofee House being held Sat-
urday, December 14 at the Passmore Hall. Come join us
for a scrumptious dinner, decadent treats and great even-
ing of delightful music while you fnd those unique gifs
amongst our beautiful holiday silent auction items.
We had a super successful 15th Annual Turkey Fund-
raiser again this fall thanks to the many community folks
who bought their delicious Tanksgiving turkeys through
