As promised, the fall foliage across most of the state is spectacular this year! In just the past week the trees have completely transformed. All of the summer and autumn rains have boosted the colors into overdrive, making it one of the prettiest seasons in years. I hope you have gotten a chance to take a drive around town or go out to Thunderbird to take a look. If not, dont wait too long. The peak of the awesome colors only lasts a couple of weeks. Now down to business hunting season. Ive had countless opportunities to check out the changing scenery across the state. I have spent every single weekend since October 1 in a tree. Unfortunately the only things Ive seen while in that tree have been the leaves turning from green to yellow. This is the rst time in years that Ive gone this long in the season without seeing a decent deer. However, I have watched squirrels, skunks, coyotes, turkeys, doves, scorpions, an opossum, an armadillo and a wild pack of dogs. I really cant say that Im disappointed because even the worst day hunting is better than a day in the ofce. If youre a hunter, I hope your season has been more exciting than mine. I still have high hopes, though. After all, the month of November is very young, and we really havent had any lasting cold air yet. In November the average highs drop into the 50s and the average lows drop into the 30s. That will get the deer moving! For now, theres no bitter cold air showing up in the forecast, so you have plenty of time to get out and enjoy nature. If sitting in a tree for countless hours while the Oklahoma wind slaps you in the face is not your cup of tea, then a drive in the car will sufce. Whatever method you choose, I hope you soak it up. The leaves are already beginning to fall and its a loooong 132 days until Spring 2014!

The unique thing that sets Sergios apart from other Italian places in my experience is its catering to different diets. Whenever I think of Italian food, I think of pounds of cheese not vegan or paleo friendly. Luckily, you can invite your vegan friend or paleo-diet practitioner while you satisfy your need for mozzarella. Theres a vegan pizza at Sergios that comes with a roasted garlic and oil sauce and has all sorts of veggies loaded on top. As a substitute to spaghetti, customers can opt for carrots instead. Really, Sergios is all about making it your own way. My friend got Portobello Parmesan (their fun alternative to eggplant) and was able to choose the pasta type penne, fettuccine or angel hair. Then she was able to select a sauce among basil pesto, alfredo, spicy marinara or regular marinara. I always love customization opportunities!

A Place for Every Taste
Two weeks ago, it was a rainy Wednesday evening and a slight chill was on the air. I stared out the window at the rain rolling down the windowpane and knew that autumn had denitely arrived. Whenever everything cools down and Im forced to stay inside to burrito myself up with my 25-pound cat (what I call a purrito), evolution kicks in. My body tells me its time to carb up in anticipation of hibernation which for me involves watching a lot of Netix and not shaving. (Oh wait I do that all year.) Whats the best way to carb up? In my opinion, getting Italian food is the way to go. I knew it was time to try a new local Italian place, and Sergios called my name. Sergios is nestled on the corner of Jones and E. Gray Street. My tendency of never looking up directions and relying on my spidey senses was working well, until I suddenly saw Sergios on my left and sharply turned (and was honked at by the guy behind me). The restaurant itself looked about the size of an intimate little house. I stepped inside in anticipation of it becoming a beacon of warmth and cheesecovered bread. My friend joined me shortly after and we perused the menu while we enjoyed complimentary, melt-in-your-mouth bread. Though they have the usual appetizers, like garlic bread and calamari, our eyes settled on something a little more innovative: pasta chips. If I wasnt so curious about pasta chips, I might have gotten the gnocchi delicious potato pasta with garlic, red onions and butter. Yum. When our pasta chips came, they looked like little noodles covered in grated Parmesan cheese and parsley with warm marinara sauce for dipping. When I popped it in my mouth, it was light and crispy like the wonton soup topping at Asian restaurants. A nice beginning without being too lling. Each day at Sergios, they have a new special. That day I had Wednesdays delicious chicken marsala with juicy little mushrooms, sweet red onion and penne in a creamy and tangy marsala wine sauce. Oh yeah, and even though Im not a huge meat eater, the chicken in it was superb. It tasted like fallapart crockpot chicken. My anc commented on it when he gobbled down my leftovers! Next time Ill save it for myself.

Brownie + Cookie = Brookie

Its ofcially fall and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. We are getting ready to stuff ourselves with turkey, dressing/stufng (even though they are totally different), candied yams and all kinds of vegetable casseroles. But the thing Im most looking forward to is the dessert! Now, dont get me wrong, I love traditional pumpkin pie and pecan pie as much as the next pie lover. But in the era of Pinterest, we now have an endless resource to new and creative recipes. This cookie was inspired by all of the new chocolate and pumpkin recipes Ive been seeing everywhere. I didnt expect these recipes to be that good because I never considered pumpkin and chocolate a pair. I loved them both, but together? I didnt know about that. So I took a leap of faith and whipped up a batch of brookies and lled them with a pumpkin cream cheese lling. (A brookie = brownie + cookie.) This is a fudgy and chewy chocolate cookie. With the richness of this cookie, youll need to pair it with a not-so-rich lling. Thats where the cream cheese lling comes in. You get the subtle avors of pumpkin and spices without it over powering your brookie.

Brookie Sandwich w/ Pumpkin Cream Cheese Filling

PREP:20 MIN BAKE:15 MIN MAKES:12 SANDWICHES
Brookie: 1 C. + 1 tbsp all-purpose our C. unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tsp baking powder tsp salt 8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate 2 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 5 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature C. light brown sugar C. granulated sugar 1 C. mini chocolate chips Filling: 8 oz. cream cheese, softened C. pureed pumpkin C. brown sugar 1 C. white sugar 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice tsp vanilla

For the cookie 1. Sift together our, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside. 2. Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second increments until melted. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs and vanilla. Set aside. Cream the butter until smooth and creamy. Beat in the sugars. 3. Mix in the beaten egg/vanilla until incorporated. Add the chocolate in a steady stream and beat until combined. Add the dry ingredients on slow speed. Fold in the mini chocolate chips. 4. Chill dough for at least 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350F. Scoop about 1 tbsp of dough and roll into a slightly attened ball. Bake for about 10 minutes or until the top begins to look matte. For the lling Beat all ingredients in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Making the sandwich Using a gallon-size Ziploc bag, ll the bag and cut the tip to frost your brookie. Pipe onto the at side of the cookie. Place another cookie on top, at side down.

Role Reversal
The Oklahoma Sooners were ranked number 15 in the rst BCS standings, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders came to Norman ranked number 10 and undefeated. Ultimately the Sooners played well and took down Texas Tech, handing them their rst loss of the year 3830. Tech came into the game with the number two-ranked passing offense, and the Sooners possessed the number one-ranked passing defense. So, something had to give. I think both sides showed moments of brilliance and had success, but in the end, the Sooners made the plays to win the ball game. Now the Sooner football team has the week off to get ready to head to Waco, Texas, for the biggest game of the year. Yes, you read that correctly I said heading to Waco for the biggest game of the year. Waco, the place where visiting football teams carried more fans than the Bears to Floyd Casey Stadium, where losing seasons were expected, and where there was never any excitement for the Baylor Bear fans to get behind. Enter Robert Grifn III and his winning a Heisman Trophy while at Baylor. Now head coach Art Briles has it cooking off the Brazos River with the Baylor Bears ranked at number six in the current BCS polls. Quarterback Bryce Petty is a contender for the Heisman this year, and he has thrown for 2,453 yards with 18 touchdowns and only one interception. Lache Seastrunk has only carried the ball 96 times on the year but is still clipping along at 9.1 yards a carry. This Bears team is scary-good. The offense seems to be unstoppable. Jokes are going around the water cooler as to how many points Baylor will score this week or the next. This used to be the weekly debate with the Oklahoma football team, so it shows just how quickly things can change on the landscape of college football. Now Baylor will be favored, and I would not be surprised if Baylor is favored to beat Oklahoma by double digits. Baylor will at least be ranked number six and the Sooners will at least be ranked tenth when they meet. Waco will be hopping; yes, it is a Thursday night, but it will be the biggest game ever on a college football Thursday night. Its two top-ranked teams and a growing rivalry between the two schools. The last time the Sooners visited Baylor, it was Grifns Heisman moment snatching a victory away from the Sooners in a wild shootout. Baylor fans will be loud and Baylor fans will be crazy; people are even afraid for their teams to play Baylor. They do not want to see the team they cheer for having 500 yards of offense put up on them in the rst half. They do not want to see Baylor beat them by 30 or more. Is it that Baylor has gone the way of the Oregon Ducks and has a multitude of uniform options while Oklahoma is stuck with staunch traditionalism? All I know is, my, how the roles have reversed!

Tigers Still Eying Playoffs
Down but not out, the Norman Tigers continue to ght with everything in their being to make it to the playoffs for the fourth straight year under head coach Greg Nation. Many thought the task could be too daunting with the likes of Edmond Santa Fe, PC West and Lawton High on the schedule. Part one of the equation has been solved. The Tigers traveled to Edmond and took on the Wolves in their own den and lay a whooping on them to the tune of 2814. Now, that may not seem like a beat-down, but it was the manner in which they did it. The Tigers did not have Darius Manning playing anymore, and Dupree Young did not play the entire game. Greg Nation used sophomore Ty Smith and freshman Diante Defreeze to pace the offense. Smith rushed 23 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jakcob Dean added 111 yards rushing as well. The Tiger defense made things difcult for Keaton Torre, the young man who replaced the injured Justice Hansen. Ahead of the Tigers are the PC West Patriots at home and the Lawton High Wolverines on the road. One should be easy and the other not so much, but High need to win them both to make the playoffs.

Everything Goes Wrong for Timberwolves

Norman North came into homecoming against Putnam City North, riding an 11-game, district-winning streak. Penalties, turnovers and touchdowns being taken off the board are just a few of the setbacks that stopped the streak for the Timberwolves. Norman North outgained PC North by more than 150 yards, but it still was not enough to overcome so many mistakes. Putnam City North arrived at Harve Collins Field riding a three-game winning streak after starting the year 0-4. Bob Wilson, the legendary coach of the Panthers, brought his team in ready to ght and never give up. Norman North was in the drivers seat for the District 6A-3 and Putnam City North was still ghting to be in the playoffs. After the Panthers 31-21 victory over the Timberwolves, 6A-3 is now in a threeway tie with Edmond North, Putnam City North and Norman North. The Timberwolves offense has continued to roll all year. Homecoming seemed to sputter the Timberwolves, and John Kolar was just a bit off that night. The Timberwolves offense had only turned the ball over three times all year and did so four times against Putnam City North. Two of those turnovers were scoop and scores. In spite of this, Norman North has Moore and Lawton Ike left on the schedule and can still win the district title.

The Uniform Theory: If it aint broke, dont fix it
Ill shoot you straight. There will be plenty of people who will disagree with my views on mens fashion and those people are wrong. But you will believe me when I tell you that mens fashion is very plain and simple, in fact, just like a real man should be. One person who disagrees with my views on mens fashion is my wife. She says, Dick, you always wear the same thing. She will admit that I have a good sense of style, but she says I need to mix it up. My response to her is this: If it aint broke, dont x it. My wife is not wrong.* Outside of professional affairs (which I try to keep to a minimum, like any self-respecting man), I wear the same thing year-round. It is my uniform; it is my armor. The only seasonal change is the addition or subtraction of a jacket. I consider my personal fashion to be a science that I have been perfecting since college. It is my belief that every man has his own fashion formula, which can be reduced to these basic principles: 1) 2) 3) 4) Favorite Favorite Favorite Favorite shirt pants (i.e. jeans) shoes jacket

These principles are based on a complex philosophy: Why would you want to wear anything else? Or, to put in another way, if it aint broke, dont x it. That doesnt mean Im some kind of savage. I dont go around wearing the same dirty shirt and pants all week. I wear the same dirty shirt and pants half the week, and then I return to my closet where I keep a backup of my favorite shirt and pants, and I wear those the other half of the week. To round off the collection, I always keep a third matching copy of my favorite shirt and pants to be worn on special occasions, like birthdays, holidays, dinner parties and date nights. My wife doesnt always understand this philosophy because shes wired differently than I am, and thats her problem. But I like to think of myself as a generous husband, so I occasionally try to help her understand the concept by way of demonstration. For example, last week the bathroom sink took to dripping. Day and night, drip drip drip. No matter how much pressure I put on the handle (you will believe me when I tell you that I am a strong man), nothing would stop the monotony. Drip drip drip. I thought it would never end. Drip drip drip. My whole life, this bathroom sink was going to haunt me with drip drip drip, like Chinese water torture. The same thing, the rest of my life, day in and day out, drip drip drip. I decided to x the sink, and when my wife got home from work she yelled at me over the noise, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I had the ooding under control, but I was still very stressed out from the mess, so I threw a wrench through the wall and screamed back, IM FIXING THE SINK. She yelled, IT WASNT BROKEN! EXACTLY! I replied. Small victories. Im Richard Moorman, and thats mens fashion. *My wife is never wrong.

Thanksgiving in Norman
For some, Thanksgiving is a holiday spent gathered around the table to catch up with relatives much like something from a Norman Rockwell painting. For others, its more of a low-key event that might involve going out to dinner instead of slaving away over a hot stove. Either way, check out this comprehensive guide for the best places to eat, drink and be merry this Thanksgiving in Norman. ------------If you want to go out to eat, consider visiting Legends Restaurant on Lindsey Street. This is a great way to get your homestyle favorites without having to do any work. The menu includes roast turkey, honey mustard-glazed ham, cornbread dressing, sweet potatoes, house-made cranberry sauce and more. Seating is available at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM, and the meal is $32.95 per person ($12.95 for children 10 and under). Seating is limited, so call (405)329-8888 to get your reservations early. Louies Grill & Bar on Campus Corner will also be open on Thanksgiving Day, so if you live on campus and dont want to make the trip home, you can still get your ll of their famous Big Lou Cheeseburger. To enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal with a crowd in the comfort of your home, contact the OU Faculty House. You can pre-order a holiday feast that serves anywhere from 10-12 people with a slow roasted turkey, cornbread stufng, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, gravy and dinner rolls. Though theyre afliated with the university, youll have to drive into Oklahoma City to pick it up. Another great option is to head to Sprouts on Main Street. On Thanksgiving theyll be open from 7 AM to 4 PM, so you can either swing by to pick up a last-minute ingredient or a whole pre-made meal for one. -------------There are no classes for OU students on Thanksgiving (November 28) or the day after, so make the most of your four-day weekend at one of these fun events. The Norman Outdoor Holiday Ice Rink opens November 22 and stays open through January 5 at Marc Heitz Chevrolet. For $10 youll get skate rentals and two hours on the ice. Theyre open Monday through Friday from 12-9 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM and Sunday from 1-7 PM. OU students also get a discount each Monday from 6-9 PM. Earn that extra slice of pie by participating in the Gobble Wobble 5K on Thanksgiving morning at 8 AM. The run starts on Pickard Avenue just east of Norman High School, and you can pick from either a 5K or one-mile fun run. Registration must be completed by November 27 and it costs $30, which benets the United Way of Normans fund for those affected by the May 2013 storms. On November 29, Oklahoma native Stoney LaRue will take the stage at the Riverwind Casino at 8 PM. Tickets run from $25-$45. Also on November 29 is the OU Mens Basketball team versus the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans at the Lloyd Noble Center at 2 PM. Student tickets are just $10. Get a start on your holiday shopping at the Cleveland County Craft Fair held at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds on November 29 & 30 from 9 AM to 4 PM each day. With over 90 crafts on site, youll nd unique items of all sorts. Parking and admission are free.
