20. Using energy method, determine the natural frequency of the system
shown in Fig-3. The cord is inextensible and without ship.
O R

14. Determine the natural frequency of the SDOF system shown in Fig-4.
15(a). Sketch a diagram to show the variation of amplitude ratio with frequency
ratio and indicate its salient observations.
(6 marks)
(b). A 15kg mass when suspended at the bottom end of an elastic member is
observed to deflect in vertical direction by 12mm under static condition.
Determine the frequency of free vibration. Also determine the viscous
force required to make the motion aperiodic at a speed of 1m/s. (10
marks)
O R
16. A machine weighs 18 kg and is supported on springs and dashpots. The total
stiffness of the springs is 12 N/mm and damping is 0.2 Ns/m. The system is
initially at rest. If a velocity of 120 mm/s is imparted to the machine, determine
(1) the displacement and velocity of mass as a function of time.

15. Derive the equation of motion and the solution to it for a forced single degree
of freedom system.
O R
16. Derive the equation of motion of a rotating machine having an unbalance and
the solution to it. Interpret the result with the help of a diagram which shows
the variation of the ratio ((M/m)/(x/e)) with frequency ratio (e/e
n
) and indicate
its salient observations.
17. A heavy gun barrel is designed such that on firing, the barrel recoils against a
spring. A dashpot at the end of the recoiling allows the barrel to come back to
its initial position within minimum time without any vibrations. The gun barrel
has a mass of 500 kg and the stiffness of the recoiling spring is 300 N/mm. If
the gun moves out a distance of 1m on firing, determine
(a) the initial velocity of the barrel on firing,
(b) critical damping coefficient available at the dashpot and
during recoil, the time required for the barrel to return to a position of
0.5m from its maximum end position.
O R
18. A mass of 10kg is suspended from one end of a helical spring, the other end
being fixed. The stiffness of the spring is 10 N/mm. The viscous damper
attached with the mass causes the amplitude to decrease to one-tenth of the
initial value in 4 complete oscillations. If a periodic force of 150cos(50t) N is
applied at the mass in the vertical direction, determine the amplitude of the
forced vibration. Also, find the amplitude if resonance is allowed to occur.
19. A passenger car weighing 1000 kg has a stiffness of its total suspension
system as 6000 N/m. The car is to run on a road whose profile could be
approximated as wave of wave length 5m and amplitude 0.05m. Determine
1. The speed to be avoided (critical speed).
2. If the vehicle is required to run for some reason at that speed to be
avoided, the amplitude of stead state vibration at that speed assuming a
damping factor of 0.45 and
3. If the vehicle has to run at a speed of 60 km/hr, the amplitude of steady
state vibration assuming the same damping factor of 0.45 to exist.

harmonic force of 1 kN at an excitation frequency of 7 Hz. Determine:
(i) its amplitude
(ii) maximum amplitude of the machine and the corresponding
excitation frequency assuming that the excitation force remains
constant with the operating speed
(iii) optimum damping
(iv) peak amplitude and
(v) the amplitude at the excitation frequency of 7 Hz when the elastic
damper has optimum damping.
