Introduction to Designing and Manufacturing Acid Stains

Rushing things will only create costly mistakes. Safety is always the most important factor when manufacturing a product. This is an addition to the manual; When making acid stains, it is not necessary to add the acid until later and even after you have placed the product in a bottle so long as you leave room for the acid. One thing you will notice is The acid stain within the bottle will change after adding the acid. Once you get the hang of it, you can mix in larger quantities for faster production. I do it all the time.

e use several Metallic Salts to make our stains. As you know acid staining is rapidly gaining popularity in commercial and residential locations.. The stains that we design will not chip, peel or fade. When properly sealed and polished, our stains will provide lasting beauty for a long time with little maintenance needed.).

Concrete Make-up is essential in results from an acid stain. An average mix design would be 40%

rock or gravel, 10-12% Portland cement, 20-26% Sand, 12-16% Water, 3-8% air entrainment.

What to mix first?

Mixing Hydrochloric Acid with water and metal salts can be tricky. Always make sure you have a well ventilated work area. Make sure there are that there no items around that would not be compatible with your new project. There is a point of mixing where it doesnt matter how much salt you place in the mix. You can however put too little. The stronger you would like a mix, the heavier you make it based on dilution plans

Safety

Always make sure you start with clean packaging and mixing tools. Have plenty of water nearby. . The first item in is always WATER.
Its time to mix.

MAKING COFFEE STAIN: This Stain carries many names. This is a popular stain
that generates highs and lows of brown and black. Were going to base everything we mix on a one gallon mixture. We start with one gallon and break it down into ounces. 128 ounces are in one gallon.
The mixes were going to use will be strong enough to dilute.

Use a large mouth container for mixing

like a pickle jug.

First always put one half gallon water, this gives you

room for adding acid and

salts and mixing up the solution.

The pour in 10 ounces of Hydrochloric Acid and mix up. Remember, no metal
objects. This mixture can be cut.

Now put in 7 tbsp of Sodium Dichromate, 7 tbsp of Ferrous Chloride or Ferrous

Sulfate, and 14 tbsp of manganese chloride. (This mix assumes you plan on diluting on the job and making more than one gallon with this gallon.) Let this set for 10 minutes and shake it up.

Using a funnel, transfer contents to a small top gallon jug. Assuming you have a
capture vat for run-off, top the jug off with water and wash the outside of the jug

and replace the lid..

You now have Coffee.

Making Stains Stronger Acid stains seem to loose their punch when shelved for a long period of time. If you require a stronger stain, just add more hydrochloric acid, keeping in mind that too much will etch deeper into the surface of your concrete slab.

MAKING BURNT UMBER: Pour in the water, pour in the hydrochloric

acidlets do Burnt Umber . 6 tbsp of Sodium Dichromate, 10 tbsp of Manganese Chloride, 3 tbsp of Ferric Chloride, 6 tbsp of Ferrous Chloride or Ferrous Sulfate. Let set for 10 minute and shake up. Transfer to small mouth container and top off. You may have settlement in your mixing jug. If so mix with a small amount of water and pour in before topping off.

MAKING BLACK LEATHER: Black Leather is a fairly easy stain to

make and is surprising in liquid appearance.

Start with the basic water and acid one half gallon of water and 10 ounces of
hydrochloric acid. Add 6 tbsp of Sodium Dichromate and then add 14 tbsp of Manganese Chloride and 2 tbsp of Ferrous Sulfate. Allow to set for 10 minutes before mixing. After transferring contents to a small mouth jug add a small amount of water to mixing jug and left over settlement and then transfer to small mouth container. Cap off with water.

Handling the Containers When I mix in gallon sizes, during transfer from jug to jug, I
do not place a cap on just yet. During transfer your gloves will get nasty. This will transfer to the cap and jug. When transfers are complete if doing more than one, wash the bottle off making sure to get the threads and bottom too. Wash your gloves at this point and with clean gloves place the caps onto the jugs. When finished making stain, wipe down the jugs with dry rags or cloth. Using a marker mark each jug to let you know whats in it. Some satins look alike in liquid appearance.
