Year of Faith
Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Crisis is comingbut God is already here!
Most people get life insurance AFTER something bad happens (accident, death) because thinking about it requires the willingness to face ones own mortality and the real possibility that you may no longer be around to provide for those you love. It is sobering to think about these things but it is also good that we do. Jesuss words today about the end of the world are also sobering and good for us to hear! Why, because our life in this world comes with an expiration date. Just as life insurance is supposed to give you peace of mind in the face of lifes uncertainty, so Jesus wants us to have a sense of security and peace that comes through faith in him in a fragile world. Investing in a trusting relationship with Christ is our Eternal Life Insurance policy. The finite nature of this world and everything in it should be enough information to get us to put our faith in Someone who is more trustworthy than the promise of tomorrows sunrise, more reliable than the tectonic plates beneath the earths surface, and more merciful than the random winds of a deadly hurricane, a massive tornado or the violent waters of a monster typhoon. We do well not to wait for the crisis to seek God out. The wise seek his face now and listen for his voice today! The wise take Christ up on his invitation to follow him through the storms of life before they are upon us! Yet the crises described in the Gospel are not just the ones originating from nature and the cosmos, but those that are man-made and a reflection of a world that has grown violently hostile to the Gospel and to those who insist on professing it. The Lord exhorts us to be among those who so insists and persists in bearing witness to this Gospel and to Gods indomitable love, scandalous mercy and enduring Truth. Standing on the promise of eternity and fixing our focus on the Eternal One is the most secure path in a world that is passing away. Crisis is coming but dont be afraid because, God is already here.
