Hotter summers. Colder winters. Its hard to know what to expect as
our climate continually changes. But with a First Tunnels polytunnel
you can make the growing season last right through the yearcome
rain or shine, heat-wave or big freeze! And by creating your own
microclimate, you can even grow crops out of season, or fruits and
vegetables not usually
found on these shores.
Well, were the first name
on your list when it comes
to dealing with people
who really understand
polytunnels inside out!
Home is the tiny
Lancashire village
of Barrowford where
weve assembled
a close-knit team of skilled
professionals who take an enormous pride
in the quality and versatility of our products.
But were enthusiasts too, and by regularly using our own
products weve introduced lots of improvements and innovations. We
even have our own allotment for some seriously hands-on gardening.
As for our happy customers...some of the names may surprise you.
As well as amateur gardeners and commercial growers, we also supply
major government organisations, HM Prisons, NHS Trusts, schools
and celebs like Alan Titchmarsh, Bob Flowerdew, and River Cottage
chef Hugh Fearnley
Whittingstall.
Ask any First Tunnels customer and theyll tell you how
hard we work to deliver a top quality product.
But now its official!
Were delighted to announce that along with only
1% of UK companies weve achieved all the requirements
of ISO9001 and have now been awarded this
internationally recognised accreditationgiving you the
added reassurance of buying from a company that meets
the worlds most exacting quality standards.
Were proud to introduce the First Tunnels Construction
team. Ten dedicated polytunnel construction experts who
have been there and built that. With over 100 years
experience between them, they have a wealth of
polytunnel construction knowledge and are more than
happy to share tips and advice with any of our customers.
We dont just keep this expertise to ourselves...we have
a team of construction wizards available at the end
of a phone to talk you through anything youre not
100% sure about even at weekends.
Dont be confused by the terms Domestic and Commercial. All
First Tunnels polytunnels are made to the same exacting quality
standards... we simply call the bigger models Commercial.
But whether youre growing for fun...or growing for
profit...the choice of domestic or commercial is entirely yours.

We have a number of types of polythene covers and even net. Each type
of polythene has been developed for specific environments...no matter what you
are growing or where you are locating your polytunnel, we have a cover to suit
your needs and location. Plus all our polythene covers
are guaranteed for 5 years. See page 6
Double, single, hinged or sliding, opening inwards
or outwards. Complete polythene, or a combination
of polythene and net, maybe you would prefer louvre?
There are lots of door options available for your
polytunnel. Find out whats best for you with our simple
side by side comparison. See page 8-9
This is a really important part of any polytunnel. The way your
structure is secured into the ground will determine its strength
and longevity. But not all polytunnels are built on soil or turf,
so we have 2 types of fixing - one for soft earth and one for solid
surfaces like concrete or timber. See page 12 for more details.
Base rails are the way to get a skin tight cover on your polytunnel.
Whether you choose timber or aluminium is very much a personal
preference and no doubt will be influenced by the location and
ground surface. Base rails also eliminate the need to trench the cover
of your polytunnel, saving you hours of back breaking toil.
See which type of base rail you need on page 13
When growing inside a polytunnel youll
never be troubled by the wind and rain, which
is great for you and most of the time good
for your plants too. However during the summer
months it can get very hot inside a polytunnel
and then irrigation is essential. See page 10
Maximising the usable space inside your polytunnel
is easy with crops bars and the
twin support brace. Crop bars will
increase your growing space
significantly, allowing you to create
2 tier growing. The twin support
brace dramatically increases
the strength of a polytunnel.

Super Clear Polythene
This UVI/EVA Polytunnel cover
is designed specifically for
the low light levels common
in the UK and allows an
impressive 95% light
transmission for more of the
spectrum used by plants.
By scattering this light it also
reduces the shadows created
by the structure, reducing
the competition for light, so crops grow more evenly.

Thermal Anti-Fog Polythene
The added UVA and UVB filters
on this UVI/EVA Polytunnel cover
dramatically reduce the fogging
or water droplets that form on
the inside of covers when water
condensation occurs, minimising
the risk of water dripping onto
plants and causing damaging
fungal disease. An infra-red
additive also reduces the speed at which heat
dissipates out through the cover, achieving up to 20%
fuel-saving in heated Polytunnels and helping the even
scatter of light. 720 Gauge (180 Micron) is guaranteed

Anti HotSpot Tape
Every First Tunnels Polytunnel comes
complete with Anti HotSpot Tape
because we know how important it
is to the life of your polythene cover.
Where the cover touches the frame,
hot spots occur which can eventually cause heat damage to the
polythene. We always use Anti HotSpot tape when constructing. This
special self-adhesive foam comes in rolls or Polytunnel size-specific
kits. The tape also helps your cover glide over the frameadding
at least a year to its lifespan.

The polythene cover we provide with our polytunnels
is very strong...and very reliable. However, no matter
how robust and hard-wearing it may be, no-one would
expect it to outlive the tubular framework on which it
sits. And sometimes, accidents or unforeseen events
can take their toll too.
So, from time to time, youll need to replace the cover
with a new one. The good news is that weve made
this process really easy, first by following the simple
instructions below, and then by watching our step-by-step
video guide
www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v28
1. Decide the width of cover required by measuring
one entire hoop of the framefrom ground to
ground (C). Now add another 2m for trenching,
or an extra 1m if fitting to a rail.
2. Choose which
of our four standard widths
is the right one for you 7.3m, 9.2m, 11.1m or 14m
3. Decide the length of polythene required by
measuring the entire length of your Polytunnel (A).
Then add twice its height (B) to cover both ends
too. Remember, a few extra metres may be required
for doors, louvres, etc.
4. Now simply decide on the kind of cover you need
from the options detailed and then place your order.
Couldnt be simpler.

Hinged Doors
When you opt for conventional hinged doors you can choose during
construction whether they open outwards or inwards.
Space permitting, outward opening doors mean you can use every
inch of internal space for cultivation or storage. Alternatively, if outside
access space is restricted, or youre concerned that open doors might
be prone to heavy gusts of wind, you can hinge the doors to open internally.
Either way youll find some really useful
video guides on www.polytunnels.co.uk
Double Louvre Upgrade
On our Commercial models, you can
opt to replace the double doors at
one end of your Polytunnel with
a double louvre insteadgiving you
another fully adjustable source
of ventilation.
The Door-drop spike
Both sliding and hinged doors are important in controlling
ventilation. And to improve this even further, we now fit a special
Door-drop spike system which allows you to secure the doors in
a closed position, or open in a position of your choice. With the
option of leaving the doors anything from an inch apart up to
fully open, you have a huge amount of control over the amount
of air that flows inand out! On hinged doors (when opened
outwards) theyre also ideal for helping prevent the risk of damage
from sudden gusts of wind. See this innovative mechanism in action...

Sliding Doors
If polytunnels are a brilliant invention, then the introduction
of sliding doors is the icing on the cake!
First Tunnels has developed a range
of sliding and hinged doors that are
available for all our domestic and
commercial models. But what makes
sliding doors now the most popular
choice by far?
Lets start with the space they save. No more restricting
access space outside, or reducing cultivation space inside.
Sliding doors free up invaluable groundspace to turn to your
immediate advantage.
Then theres ventilation because you can slide the doors open
to leave any gap of your choice, giving you even more control
of airflow in and out of your polytunnel.
And finally, theres safety and security. With the best will in the
world, serious gusts of wind can damage
a hinged door left open. But sliding doors sit
securely on the doorframe, flush to the polytunnel,
and out of harms waywith the added security
of a drop spike which will lock it firmly to the
ground, open or closed.
To see just how easy they are to fit from new
or to upgrade from existing hinged doors

guide on www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v58

Your first big decision when choosing a Polytunnel is almost
alwaysWhat size is ideal?. But with First Tunnels theres
another important factor to take into consideration
Which doors do I want?. It might not sound like something
to give a lot of thought to, but the choices you make will
definitely affect your day-to-day
Polytunnel management.
First Tunnels provides a timber, hinged door for each end as
part of your polytunnel kit. These doors, like all our polytunnel
doors, are made from impressively heavy grades of timber,
specially treated for outstanding longevity and performance.
They will provide you with ease of access and the extra versatility
required to control ventilation too.
There are occasions where a hinged door is not ideal, perhaps
a sliding, wide or even a double door would be better suited
to your needs? See our sliding door in operation...

A Polytunnel means you take over
from Mother Nature when it comes
to controlling the elements. Which
also means youre entirely responsible for irrigationsomething
that can be very time consuming. Unless, that is, you let
First Tunnels give you a helping hand.
Irrigation is an option for all sizes of Polytunnel but for bigger
Polytunnels especially, our advice is to forget about watering
cans and hose pipes. Theyre hard work. Theyre wasteful.
And saturating everything once a dayespecially in hot weather
is far from being an ideal practice. Instead, we recommend
you install an overhead irrigation system. Not only will it make
your life a whole lot easier, but youll be amazed how quickly
it will pay for itself in terms of saved time, saved money
(especially if your water is metered) and improved productivity.
Dont just take our word for it...

The First Tunnels system features 30cm downtubes
incorporating a weight to make sure it hangs true, and an
anti-drip device with stable sprayer which keeps the spray lines
primed and ready for instant start-up.
Flexible LDPE pipes distribute water throughout the structure,
making it easy to add further lines at any time. And, for the
bigger Commercial tunnels, a Twinline or Tripleline Overhead
option is available, allowing you to water in sections
a particularly useful feature, especially when water pressure
is low.

ANCHOR I NG
Contrary to popular myth, Polytunnels do not blow away. In fact, when they are properly constructed and anchored they are
incredibly stable and securethe kind of permanent structures Commercial growers depend on. Where the land is soft and
co-operative, anchor plates can be used in conjunction with trenching to provide a seriously robust fix. If you wish to eliminate the
need for a trench and are considering base rails then anchor plates are a necessity and not 'optional'. For our very large structures,
over and above 26ft wide, we recommend concreting in the foundations as opposed to using anchor plates.
TRENCHI NG v BASE RAI LS
When the ground is soft and co-operative, the traditional way
to secure a polytunnel cover is to dig a deep trench around the
entire perimeter and bury the ends of the cover. This will keep
it taught and firmly in place.
However, there are drawbacks. First this can be backbreaking
work. Second, when you want to replace the cover you have
to repeat the same exercise all over again. And third, sometimes
the ground is hard standing and trenching is simply out of the
question.
The good news is that First Tunnel base rails do the job equally
well, in a fraction of the time, and with only a fraction of the
effort. And we offer a choice of timber or aluminium.
ALUMI NI UM
BASE RAI LS
Where a truly long-life solution
is required, aluminium base rails
are ideal. Our special aluminium
extrusion is clamped to the base
of the structure and PVC infills are used to hold the cover firmly in
place. Because nails are not required, this method is kinder to the
polythene and infills can easily be removed and reused. Again,
as with the timber base rails, anchor plates will also be required
to keep the Polytunnel secure and in place.
If extreme weather conditions are likely
to batter your Polytunnel on a regular
basis, you may want to embed your
foundation tubes in concrete.
Alternatively you can simply use our special anchor plates.
Designed to fit over the foundation tube before the framework is
slotted into place, they are clamped at ground level to add extra
weight and security. Theyre quick and easy to fit and highly
effective at preventing the framework from liftingor sinking.
See Spares and Parts page 56-57 for prices.
B AS E R AI L S
If youre siting your Polytunnel on concrete, flags or timber sleepers
youll need to add a combination of base rails and base plates.
The base rails are used to keep the
cover taught while the plates are
designed to create feet for the
framework which can then be
screwed to the ground. Triangular
and square plates are supplied,
depending on the tube diameter
of the framework.
See Spares and Parts page 56-57 for prices.
TI MBER BASE RAI LS
First Tunnels Timber Base Rails
are used to run around the
entire structure, the Polythene
is then attached to this and
the height of the rail is adjusted
to achieve a skin-tight covera much easier option than
re-trenching each time you replace a cover. Of course, trenching
also anchors the Polytunnel so if a base rail is being used
instead, anchor plates will also be required to weigh down the
framework and secure the Polytunnel firmly to the ground.

All growing environments need the right ventilation because too
much warmth and humidity can be just as damaging as too little.
With a First Tunnels Polytunnel, weve made it as quick, easy and
convenient as possible to decide the amount of air that flows
giving you the same degree of control you have over all the elements.
Controlled ventilation also makes a Polytunnel the ideal environment
for housing livestock.
Side Ventilation
This is accomplished by replacing the part of the
cover nearest the ground with 50% shade ventilation
net...a simple operation achieved by attaching
a timber or aluminium side rail part way up the side of the
Polytunnel and then attaching the net to it. The bottom of the net
will either need trenching or fixing to a base rail.
Side Ventilation Cover Screens
Where timber side and base rails have been used, there
is the option to fit a screen
which can be progressively lowered
to adjust the flow of air, allowing you
to fully control the ventilation of plant
foliage while still protecting the root
system from wind chill.
This system cannot be used in conjunction with Aluminium Base
and Side Rails.
To order these options,
see the relevant size table.
For example the 8x10ft side
ventilation kit see page 21.

To order crop bars
for all available hoops
on a specific polytunnel,
see the relevant size table.

crop bar kit see page 46.
Crop Bars
Crop bars are the secret of true
versatility in your Polytunnel. Made
of galvanised steel, they are fixed
across the hoops at head height and can then be used to suspend
wires, canes, net or hanging baskets. Crop bars also help
strengthen the structure, providing extra protection against
heavy winds on particularly exposed sites.
Crop bar kits are supplied with enough crop bars to fit every
hoop of your Polytunnel excluding the two end hoops.
Our crop bars are made for use exclusively on the First Tunnels
range. However we can make crop bars in any size, to suit other
makes of Polytunnel, see p57 or visit www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/Tube
and use the online tube design to specify exactly what you want.

6. Irrigation
Time saving ways to water
your crops...whether youre
there or not depends on
the system you choose.
First things firstyou need to decide what size and type of Polytunnel is right for you.
Sometimes, available space will dictate the best or only practical option. But where
space isnt such an issue, the size and cover of the tunnel you choose will need careful
consideration.
To help you make the right choice, this brochure takes you through all the sizes and types
of cover, explaining the relative strengths and benefits. Have a good read. Take a long look
at the site you intend using. Measure. Measure again. Mull things over. Then return to the brochure.
Nows the time to check out the accessories, all of which will either prolong the life of your Polytunnel,
or help you get the most out of every inch of space.
Going green
Everything you need to know about your polytunnel can be found at a glance in the green panel...
all the key features and sizes. Want to know technical specifics... well these are further down the page.

Base Rails make a world of difference
Depending on site conditions, digging a trench
around the perimeter of your Polytunnel can
be backbreaking work. The quick and easy
alternative is to fix the polythene cover to
a Timber or Aluminium Base Rail which is fitted
with clamps around the entire structure. This
tensioning facility is then adjusted to achieve
a drum-tight cover and is a much easier option
than re-trenching when its time to replace
a cover.
www.firsttunnels.co.uk/v25
Anchor Plates
When a polytunnel is sited on soft ground,
anchor plates are used to prevent the framework
from lifting and sinking, as an alternative
to concreting the foundation tubes in place.
Anchor Plates are essential on Polytunnels fitted
with Base rails.
Base Plates
If you are sitting your polytunnel on a hard base
such as concrete or timber sleepers, you will
need a combination of Base Plates and Base
Rails. Base Plates are designed to create feet
for the framework which are then screwed to
the ground and Base Rails applied for the cover
to be fixed.

OR DE R I NG I S E AS Y. . .
Simply select the size of polytunnel with your
preferred cover option. Remember this is
a complete polytunnel kit, see page 4-5 for
full details of what comes as a part of our
complete kit.
This style of polytunnel will require trenching.
To attach the cover to your polytunnel a trench
about 40cm deep will need to be dug around
the outer perimeter of your polytunnel.
Dont under estimate how long, and tiring,
digging your trench can be. We always
recommend base rails, see our optional extras
below for lots of other really useful additions
to your polytunnel.

You need a Timber Side Ventilation kit in
order to have a Ventilation Screen.
If you select an Aluminium Side Ventilation
kit you CANNOT add a Ventilation Screen.
Want even more growing space...Crop Bars
easily increase your growing potential.
Consider the Twin Support Brace if you
suspect your polytunnel will be subjected
to high winds.
Staging is great for storage and can also
be used to increase the growing space.
Ground cover is a must. Polytunnels
encourage all plants to grow faster,
even weeds.

Anchor Plates
When a polytunnel is sited on soft ground, anchor
plates are used to prevent the framework from
lifting and sinking, as an alternative to concreting
the foundation tubes in place. Anchor Plates are
essential on Polytunnels fitted with Base rails.
Base Plates
If you are sitting your polytunnel on a hard base
such as concrete or timber sleepers, you will need
a combination of Base Plates and Base Rails.
Base Plates are designed to create feet for the
framework which are then screwed to the ground
and Base Rails applied for the cover to be fixed.
Base Rails make a world of difference
Depending on site conditions, digging a trench
around the perimeter of your Polytunnel can
be backbreaking work. The quick and easy
alternative is to fix the polythene cover to
a Timber or Aluminium Base Rail which is fitted
with clamps around the entire structure. This
tensioning facility is then adjusted to achieve
a drum-tight cover and is a much easier option
than re-trenching when its time to replace
a cover.

Despite the unpredictable British weather, come rain or shine
our climate seems particularly well suited to the cultivation
of fruitespecially juicy berries and cherries. But even the most
abundant of crops can be rendered useless in a matter of days,
if theyre not properly protected
from hungry invaders.
Heading the list of culprits are
our feathered friends, most
of which are extremely partial
to feasting on the fruits of
your labour. So keeping them
entirely at bay is definitely the order of the day.
Rising to the challenge is the First Tunnels Fruit Cage. Available
in a range of sizes to suit everything from low growing bushes to the
loftier heights of a cherry tree, these premium fruit cages are
constructed from the finest galvanised tubular steel and covered in
netting. So, whether youre protecting from flocks of smaller birds,
the unwanted attention of pigeonseven the pest threat of butterflies...
the strong (17x17mm) polypropylene side mesh and the super light
double knitted roof mesh (18x18mm) are more than up to the job.
Doors can be fitted at any point on the fruit cage perimeter.
Building your cage is quick and easy. Every accessory you could
need is readily available. And the finished construction will be strong,
durable and ready to guard your fruityear after year.

Horticultural fleece creates an excellent microclimate and because
its a thin, pliable fabric it can be used as a floating protective
layer for early crops and other delicate plants, preventing damage
from cold winds and frosts. It also protects against insects and
birds. The level of protection can be increased during very cold
weather by adding multiple layers. Because the fleece allows light,
air and water through, the microclimate it creates around developing
plants allows them to grow faster than unprotected crops.
Fleece is often used for cloches, within mini polytunnels, cold frames,
even lining greenhouses and protecting turf. 18g/m

stone barns, metal buildings and wooden structures.
But a considerably lower-cost alternative is the
modest Polytunnel.
What you might call a First Tunnels Sheep Shelter
(we know it as a Polytunnel adapted for sheep).
But whichever way you say it, this will quickly prove
to be an invaluable part of your day-to-day
animal husbandry.
During the colder, wetter months its easier and
more enjoyable to care for sheep that are housed.
The protection a Sheep Shelter provides can
improve the whole flocks welfare, reduce stress
and increase the survival rates of lambs. Whilst
a Sheep Shelter really comes into its own during
the cold, wet weather of late winter and early
spring it can also be useful dry storage throughout
the rest of the year. Something which can make
a significant difference to your profitability.
Designed for ease of stock management and
maintaining the ongoing good health of the
herd. You can choose the size of Polytunnel that
best suits your flocks requirements, then well
custom build your Sheep Shelter. Things to
consider are...bespoke wider doors, heavy
duty opening ventilation, you name it, we
can incorporate it.
Theres a choice of polythene covers designed
to reduce the light transmission and ultimately
control the heat. And a side ventilation
system with reinforced net panels suitable for
animal husbandry will help minimise the
levels of stress.
Simply tell us your precise requirements,
and well take it from there. Estimates of cost are
absolutely FREEwith no obligation.

Quality instructions
To help our customers we have produced FREE, detailed
downloadable construction guides for all the First Tunnels
products, covering everything from the initial setting out
to ensuring the tension on your polythene cover is drum tight.
Weve spent a great deal of time fine tuning our instructions...
speaking to our customers, getting input about where they need
more detail, then working with our construction team to ensure
our guides are thorough and clear. Weve even drafted in teams
of complete polytunnel novices to test and provide feedback on
the construction guides.
As a result, each and every step of constructing your
polytunnel is covered in great detail with written step-by-step
instructions supported by a series of easy to follow diagrams.
Then to help you see how this comes together in real life,
weve filmed everything and created a huge online library
of Construction videos.

How easy are they to construct?
Make no mistake, constructing a polytunnel is not a little project
to amuse you on an idle Sunday afternoon. A 12ft x 25ft can be
constructed in a day by knowledgeable constructors but it would
be prudent to pencil in two days for a virgin constructor. The
flip side is that if you can put together a piece of flat-pack furniture,
you should have no real trouble with a polytunnel.
First Tunnels supplies over 3000 polytunnels a year and the vast majority
of those customers erect their own polytunnel. Many are complete
novices who, without any difficulty, have constructed their polytunnel
thanks to the comprehensive and detailed instructions we have
produced working with our dedicated team of constructors.
If you do experience problems
with your polytunnel construction
or just need a little bit
of technical support, visit
www.polytunnels.co.uk
our dedicated polytunnel
construction site. Youll find
numerous videos - typically
they show the methods used
to assemble things like doors,
hoops, foundations and, most
importantly, how to achieve
a drum tight cover. And dont worry if you have lost
or damaged your instructions. You can download ALL our polytunnel
construction guides for FREE from this site too!
Alternatively you can use the Construction Helpline 01282 601253
9am-5pm Monday to Friday and 07801 601253 at the weekend
(please note this service is NOT available over the Christmas period
and Bank Holidays). This allows you to talk directly to
one of our constructors, ask their expert opinion, get the
answer and complete your polytunnel.
www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v11
What orientation is best?
If you are lucky and have a choice, and you are prone to heavy
winds, then we would advise positioning the polytunnel where
it will have the most protection, ie next to a wall, hedge, tree-line,
etc. If this isnt possible
it is advisable to position
the length of the polytunnel
into the prevailing wind.
From a growing perspective
it is generally accepted
that a North to South
orientation will generate
slightly lower temperatures
than East to West where
the sun tracks across
the long side of the
polytunnel.
ww.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v22
What happens if I tear the Polythene?
Dont worry, we have a solution. Polythene Repair Tape is a flexible
long lasting translucent tape designed to
effectively repair accidental damage or tears in
polythene covers on polytunnels. Repair tape
is available in three widths to suit most
applications and is hardly noticeable when
applied. www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v63
Can Polytunnels be moved or extended?
The climate of make do and mend has led
many gardeners to wise up to the fact that
IT IS possible to extend, refurbish, or even
relocate polytunnels in a bid to maximise
growing space. Whether you are modifying
or extending an existing Polytunnel, we would
suggest this is best done when your cover
needs replacing as it is not recommended
that the polythene is reused.
What are all the different
Polythene Covers and how
long do they last?
We have a number of Polythene
films available, each with their own
special features to help you achieve
the right environment for your needs,
see page 6 for full details. Like every
other aspect of a First Tunnels product,
the film we specify has been tested
to last and comes with our 5 year
guarantee (against UV degradation).
In fact many of our films have lasted
closer to 10 years!
www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v62
Can Polytunnels be heated?
Yes. The polythene is designed to withstand both hot and cold
environments. See our range of Heaters on page 54. If you are
considering heating a polytunnel then why not consider using
a mini polytunnel to protect tender plants inside your already existing
polytunnel, like double glazing. This method saves on
your heating costs. Discover more about mini polytunnels
on page 51. www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v81
What can I grow in my Polytunnel?
Anything and everything. Today the polytunnel is used to protect
80% of soft fruit things like tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries and
blackberries...Polytunnels also protect onions, potatoes, peppers,
cucumbers, melons, lettuce, beans and flowers. The list is endless.
Over the years all types of plants (flowers and
vegetables) have been grown with outstanding
results, a large percentage of championship plants
have been grown under polythene. Our guides
have been written exclusively for First Tunnels by
Mark Gatter and Andy McKee. Download your
FREE growing guides...www.firsttunnels.co.uk/guides
Are Polytunnels Organic?
The vast majority of people would argue that the
environmental benefits of using a polytunnel hugely outweigh the
environmental costs of its production. Using a polytunnel will
significantly reduce the quantity of fruit and vegetables you need
to buy, avoiding the associated food miles, energy costs and
packaging.
All the timber we use is sourced from the UK from sustainable
forests and has full FSC accreditation. A polytunnel cover should
last for around five years, which makes it a fairly small part of the
plastic consumption of a Westerner. The cover can be recycled
and be made into smaller covers for cloches and cold frames
and a host of other applications around the garden.
Many champions of the Organic and Self Sufficiency movement
own Polytunnels. Buy a polytunnel and enjoy all the extra food it
lets you produce - then start totting up the environmental savings.
How much does a replacement cover cost?
How to fit a replacement cover?
If your polythene cover has passed its
prime, you have inherited a frame
or maybe bought a second hand
structure, a replacement cover will soon
get your polytunnel back in business.
Working out how much polythene you
will need is simple with the easy to use
calculator on our website. Just tap in
the length and height of your polytunnel,
plus the distance over the hoop and
the smart online calculator will work
out the rest - in feet or metres.
On average, a replacement cover for
a 10ft x 15ft polytunnel would cost in the region of 50,
cut to fit with no waste and no cutting charge.
www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v69
Fitting the cover is just as easy. Watch the online video for more
details and remember, if you get stuck, or just want the reassurance
that youre doing the right thing, we have our Construction
Helpline where you can talk to one of our professional
Construction team. www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v28
What are the planning regulations for Polytunnels?
In general you do not need planning permission for sheds,
greenhouses, summerhouses or polytunnels. However you will need
to apply for planning permission if
the polytunnel is nearer to any road
than the nearest part of the house,
unless theres at least 20m between
the polytunnel and a road. You cant
build over 3m high (or more than 4m
if it has a pitched roof).
A pitched roof has its ridge at the centre,
and both sides slope down at the
same angle - this accurately describes
a polytunnel roof.
Take extra care if your site has a listed
building or resides in a conservation area,
national park, or area of outstanding
natural beauty. There are further
restrictions to planning in these cases.
If you are thinking of ordering a large commercial
sized structure, or more than one, or you have
any worries at all, have a word with your local
planning department.

are covered in detailed text descriptions in our construction guides and on our Facebook pages. So if youd like to know anything more
about anything you read about here, just visit us online...

What type of doors are available?
Your first big decision when choosing a Polytunnel is almost
always...What size is ideal?. But with First Tunnels theres another
important factor to take into consideration...Which doors do I want?.
First Tunnels provides
a hinged door for each
end...as standard.
This means optimum
ease of access and
extra versatility when it
comes to controlling
ventilation. In addition
to hinged doors, First
Tunnels also offers
sliding doors.
Weve spent a long
time arriving at
the ideal timber
thickness for doors,
door frames and base
rails. And every inch of it is treated with
TANALITHE to help preserve its strength, shape and rigidity.
No shortcuts. Just the best materials for the job, carefully selected
to perform perfectly. Naturally were also conscious of the
environment and the impact of using natural materials, thats why all
our wood is fully FSC accredited.
So...what are the benefits of Sliding Doors?
Controlling your polytunnel ventilation is a breeze with sliding
doors. They can quickly and easily be adjusted and firmly fixed
in place. The ground bolt system lets you control the exact amount
of airflow you need. And because they slide across the end
of your polytunnel theres no chance of the wind slamming them
shut...giving you peace of mind when little fingers are about.
Theyre space saving too giving you more room to grow. Perfect!
www.FirstTunnels.co.uk/v34
We also understand that some customers have access to a supply
of timber or may prefer to design their own size and type of door.
If this is the case then you also have the
option of excluding the timber door frame
and doors and receiving a discount.
Strong hoops
Having made polytunnels for over 20
years, we know exactly the gauge
of steel hoop to use for each size
of tunnel. Obviously, the bigger
the polytunnel, the more weight it
has to supportbut it doesnt
need to be over-engineered or
unnecessarily costly.
We specify as standard hoops
which are more than up to the
task in most normal situations.
Of course, some polytunnels are sited
in particularly exposed and windy places. So where your
polytunnel may be subjected to extreme conditions, you can upgrade
- for example a 10 or 12ft polytunnel - to 35mm hoops. Our
hoops come as a 3 or 4 piece system where each joint is supported
by a Joint Brace. Hoops fitted with joint braces are stronger than
the traditional 2 piece that some of our competitiors offer. A 2 piece
hoop configuration can increase the cost to you through transportation
(bigger pieces) and makes the construction process much harder
as you need a bigger space within which to construct.
Construction manual
We believe in quality - quality instructions for a quality
product. So youll find our printed Construction Guides are
equally comprehensive and easy to follow...and theyre an
invaluable guide and reference when youre in the thick of
things on-site. The Construction Guides will take you
through every element of your polytunnel construction step
by step, complete with quick reference (QR) codes for anyone
with a smart phone to view the videos on-site.
And remember, if you get stuck, we have the Construction
Helpline, where you can speak to one of our team
of professional constructors.
And then we have our
Tunnel Vision pages. This
part of the First Tunnels
site is filled with loads of
polytunnel knowledge...
everything from tips on ordering
to expert advice from some of
the professional gardeners who
already use our tunnels.

Dont just take our word for it...
We believe we make the best polytunnels you can buy. But
dont just take our word for it. We sell polytunnels to NHS
Trusts, schools, major government organisations and loads
of household name celebs in the gardening and food
business...people like Alan Titchmarsh, Bob Flowerdew
and River Cottage chef Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall. We also
work closely with the leading experts in polytunnel gardening
Mark Gatter, Andy McKee and Paul Peacock. To find out
what they think of First Tunnels...check out our website,
Facebook, Twitter and the blog.
What are you waiting for...
As we all look to minimise costs and maximise savings, in
a drive to live well for less, the humble polytunnel has a lot more
to offer than you might think.
Growing your own is probably the most effective and rewarding
way to save money on your household shop. Plus...it improves
your familys health - through exercise and delivering your
5-a-day of fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year.
Using a polytunnel also means you can grow quicker and yield
more, so its a win win.
Finally its a hobby that
helps you and your
family stay fit, eat
healthily and most
important...
SAVES YOU MONEY!

Super strong covers
Knowing your cover can stand up to the worst the British weather
can throw at it is priceless. Thats why First Tunnels uses polythene
sourced from experts in Southern Spain. Its tough and strong,
thats why we guarantee it for
a full 5 years (against UV
degradation)...though its not
uncommon for our covers
to last closer to 10 years. All you have to do is decide which is the
best cover option for you.

OK, all polytunnels are constructed in much the same way, using a semi-circular metal frame covered in polythene. Youve decided
on the size that best suits your needs, but youre confused about where to buy it from. Various companies promoting what, initially
looks like the same thing, but at differing prices. So heres what to do...put in some time researching the products and the companies
to make sure you get the right product for you.
When comparing Polytunnel manufacturers, although the end product will essentially do the same job, the quality, durability and
value for money is really important. Before taking the plunge, take the time to read through the construction manual. A well-informed
construction manual is a good indication that the supplier knows their stuff!
Check the tech specs - we strongly advise checking things like the steel diameter, hoop spacing, timber thickness and the Polythene
thickness (gauge/micron) which should also come with a guarantee - beware these can vary dramatically! Delve into the nitty gritty
to check the quality and design of fixtures and fittings, the nuts and bolts that will hold the structure together, and even check the
aftercare service.
They do say you get what you pay for - check that doors and door frames are included in the overall price, not a cheeky additional
extra! Some companies offer only rollup doors or even dummy doors as a cheaper alternative.
All these clever tricks can make a Polytunnel look cheaper in the first instance.
But its always a good idea to check company reviews and social media, find out whos
taking about them and why?
Finally, a little bit of reassurance from us. We believe our Polytunnels are excellent value
for money and are happy to offer a like for like price match...and thats a promise!

How will my Polytunnel be delivered?
A 12ft x 25ft Polytunnel order typically consists of around 10 items
and weighs 160kg in total. Of course, this can vary depending
on your choice of additional options. Naturally, smaller structures
weigh less, while a large Commercial structure could weigh as
much as a ton.
