DESIGN CONCEPT
The Entertainment and Sports Center (ESC) project involves the construction of an indoor, multi-use arena at the location of the existing Downtown Plaza shopping center. The arena would accommodate sporting events and entertainment events such as professional and collegiate sports, concerts, ice shows, indoor rodeo and motor sports, trade shows, large graduations, and other indoor entertainment shows. The design concept for the ESC has evolved based on the following objectives: To create a regional destination and central gathering place; To create an iconic civic open space; To create an active entertainment and sports center district that is uniquely Sacramento; To design and build the countrys most technologically innovative and advanced entertainment venue that is capable of accommodating the Sacramento Kings and a broad array of other events in a unique and enjoyable experience for fans and performers; To develop a sustainable ESC complex that supports smart growth principles and encourages multi-modal transit options; To enhance Downtown Sacramento and connect to existing landmarks in the City; The ESC building design will generally be circular in nature with rectilinear edge buildings that create streetwalls along surrounding streets. The ESC building would be a multi-level structure clad with metal, glass and other materials to be determined. Glazing would be concentrated in a manner to allow views into the ESC concourse levels from the courtyard area, and views into the upper terrace levels from the surrounding streets. Distinctive lighting and signage would be positioned inside the facades with glazing and would be visible from inside and outside the ESC, making the facades visually distinctive and highly visible. A canopy structure composed of columns and framing would be added on terrace level to provide shade in public plaza areas. The building will be design for optimum energy efficiency through strategies such as: The use of thermal displacement ventilation and radiant strategies within the public spaces; The potential use of onsite thermal energy storage to reduce peak cooling and electrical demands; The use of low flow plumbing water fixtures throughout the building; Sustainable roofing techniques to reduce urban heat island effect, such as roof mounted pv solar panels, green roof etc; and Local plant species to reduce irrigation needs.

Finally, we are still receiving input and finalizing design accordingly. Therefore, additional information will be forthcoming as the public process concludes.
