Vayashev: And He Dwelled Beresheet 37:1-40:23 Haftarah: Amos 2:6-3:8 Brit: Acts 7:9-16

First, let us establish a bit of background before we plunge into this weeks Parsha. In Beresheet (Genesis) Chapter 28:4 when Isaac gives Jacob the blessing of the birthrightwe read, And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land
1

wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham. And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother. (Gen 28:4-5 KJV) It is also a truth that much of this portion is symbolically prophetic of our Messiah, and ourselves as will be seen shortly; but take special noticeas we explore these verses were always reading about walking in a certain, returning to a certain place to dwell with our Heavenly Father in communion with Him. We read, Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Canaan. (Gen 37:1 NAS) Our lead character for the last few portions is now in his old age, and we find him living as a sojourner, like his fatheraware of the fact that all of his youthful ambitions spent wandering, seeking to obtain things that may give the appearance of satisfaction and status are but futile pursuits, as man himself is but a vapor. He understands now that this journey is an opportunity on this side of eternity to learn how to live a life of faith in our Creator, trusting in His plan to have a covenantal relationship with His people, and all who would come to Him so that He could not just dwell amongbut in us as well.

I am looking for Messiahand I am desperate to see The Hand of my Heavenly Father, and His character at work in His people. My hope is that we will be able to recognize these patterns and typically commonplace symbols that The Father continually places out in front of us reveal Himself, to draw us back to Him, and to gain a heart-knowledge if you will so we can be changed as we pursue His Teaching together. And it is here in this opening verse of this portion that we observe YisraEl, or Yaakob, now transformed more into the beloved Patriarch we as his descendants have come to admire and respect. It says he lived in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Canaan. The word here for lived, or dwelled is where we get the name of our portionVayeshev. The root word of such is from Strongs# H3427 and it is Yashab-as to sit down as to judge, to dwell, to abide. Again notice the 2-letter root word found in our parshas title Shub, which means to turn, or to return The shin is a picture of two front teeth represented as Pressing, and the bet is a picture of the tent. Combined pictographically it means to Press to the tent, as a place of dwelling as the place that is returned to. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance,
3

obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (Heb 11:8-10 KJV) There the word we read in the Greek for dwelling is taken from Strongs# G2730

!"#$%!!& : Kat-oy-keh-o from G2596 and

G3611; to house permanently, i.e. reside (lit. or fig.) dwell, properly signifies to settle down in a dwelling. Besides its literal sense, it is used of the indwelling of the totality of the attributes and powers of the Godhead in Christ; ref. Col 1:19; 2:9, and Eph. 3:17. ! ! ! For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; (Col 1:19 KJV) For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. (Col 2:9 KJV) That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (Eph 3:17 KJV)

If we trace the word to its root in Strongs# G3611, we read

$"!!& : oy-keh-o; to occupy a house, i.e. reside, to

cohabit. To inhabit as ones abode. It is used (1) of God as dwelling in light, 1 Tim. 6:16; (2) of the indwelling of the Spirit of God in the believer, Rom. 8:9, 11, or of the church, 1 Cor. 3:16. ! But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (Rom 8:911 KJV)

It is most interesting to note that a search of the Concordance to the Septuagint proves that the word used for Christ dwelling in our hearts, by faithis the exact same word used for Jacob dwelling in the land of his father Isaac. Jacobhas learned to walk by faith! Our man Yaakob, in the sunset of his lifeafter having wrestled and coming to the end of himself, has learned to walk in the same path that his father Isaac walked, who walked in the way of his father Abraham, who walked in the way of all of

their FatherYHWH. In fact, couldnt we read Genesis 37:1 to also say, Jacob settled and was firm in the ways of his Fathers journeys. Whats more is we are tied to that Land of Promisethe land that had promised in the beginning to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacoband soon to Joseph. But the land or eretz as it is spoken in Hebrew, is an integral part of the life of a believerconsider, what was it that The Father required of Adam to do in the garden before the fall? And what did he command Adam to do when escorted out of the gardenafter having refused to address the dreadful condition of his own heart, it can be understood that tending the land is a clear picture of tending to our heart! It is to be cultivated and tended so that it will be good soil, and receive the Good Seed to bring forth and bear fruit that provide life to bring glory to and to sustain man! As we read in Luke 8:11-15
1

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
12

They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
13

And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
14

But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
15

The word for Land is taken from Strongs# H776

!" #" $: eh-rets: from an unused root prob. Mean. To be

firm; the earthland, country, ground. Land is divided up into fragments by tribe or nations.

#!: The 2-letter root word from eretz, or land, is Retz

and it means To Crush, as a Potsherd, and as a desire. Broken pieces of pottery were commonly used as writing tablets as they were inexpensive and durable. The potsherds were commonly used to send messages from one person to another, usually carried by runners. Interestingly, the land finds its origin in the same word used for potsherd, to crush, and desire. It is here we recognize
7

the connection between our heartand GODs eretz, a blessed potsherdbroken but redeemed for the express purpose that HE will faithfully inscribe HIS message, HIS Teaching UPON OUR HEART.

! Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; (Isa 42:5-6 KJV) ! I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. (Isa 45:12 KJV) ! O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. (Psa 104:24 KJV) ! Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; (Eph 3:8 KJV) ! But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Phi 4:19 KJV) ! To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: (Col 1:27 KJV) ! Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. (Heb 11:26 KJV)
8

! And my personal favorite That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory , to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in yo ur hearts by faith ; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love , May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled w ith all the fulness of God (Eph 3:18 - 19 KJV) (Eph 3:16 - 17 KJV) One of the reasons we appreciate Jacob so much is, because havent we, like him in his youth and into adulthood, have to learn through experience that for all his hustle, all his guile and deception was for naughtand good thing too! How tragic it is to be the one with a thorny heart, who only after the opportunity had died, realized we were responsible for choking the one beautiful thing that could truly bring life to our orphaned heart. Thank GOD we serve a Creator who doesnt abide faraway in the outer depths of the cosmos, light years away but rather loved us so much, that HE would offer HIS ONLY

SONto die, for us, so that we could be restored back into sweet redemption...with HIM.

This Torah portion has everything to do with the heart and thankfully Jacob is now walking with YHWH, trusting His Promisestending his heart like Adam did in the garden before the fall as we read in Genesis 3:8 Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. (Gen 2:15 NAS)
In the Hebrew the phrase we read there for Cultivate and Keep is

Perhaps you can hear the root words there, they are abad, and shema; of their list of meanings I appreciate abads meaning to till, and to plow. Of the word Shema, we understand from the Shema prayer, as it means to keep watch, to guard, and to preserve.

Gan Eden
Gan =
meaning Garden, Protection:

The pictograph (gimel) is a picture of a foot and means to walk with an extended meaning to gather. The n(nun) is a picture of sprouting seed. Combined these mean a gathering of seeds. A garden is a place for growing crops and is often surrounded by a rock wall or hedge to protect it from grazing animals. *Remember-The Seed is the Word of GOD. Where* does The Seed go?

Eden=

Comes from S#5727 or adan, meaning to soft, or pleasant, to delight themselves; Delight, pleasure. Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. (Psa 37:4-5 NAS) The word in Hebrew for Delight used in Psalm 37:4 is from Strongs#6026 to be soft or pliable, (fig.) effeminate or luxurious delight; delicate. Do you recognize any similarity between this Hebrew word and the one just above for Eden in the Ancient pictographic text? They share a common twoletter root wordAyin Nun

!" =

The pictograph combined means eye of continuance. The

nomadic agriculturist carefully watches over his livestock and crops by keeping a close eye on them. It was common to construct a shelter consisting of a roof on four posts, as a shelter from the glare of the sun. If we examine our word Eden, we have an eye of continuance on what? The central Hebrew letter in Eden is a DaletWho is THE DOOR? YESHUA!!! Which is why read in Psalm 37:4 that if we Delight ourselves in THE LORD, which is our Messiah Yeshua, then He will give us the desires of our heart. What would those be? The Fruit born as a result of staying rooted in, cultivating, watching over and preserving the WORD of GODthese are the unsearchable riches we read about about in Ephesians 3:16-17 found in the heart that is rooted in Christ! Again, these are the word pictures The Father has chosen to reveal His Love and Plan for man. ! Jeremiah 16:19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. ! Ezekiel 20:18 But I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:

! Proverbs 22:28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. ! Proverbs 23:10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: ! John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. ! John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. This is why YHWH promises a specific piece of property, as it represents a heart that is set apart from idols, from filth, from vain tradition, from mixed forms of worshipit represents a good fruitful heart protected by the landmarks/boundaries set by YHWH as prescribed for us in His Torah, who is YESHUA in you The hope of Glory (Col. 1:27)

Let us now read Beresheet (Genesis 37:2-11):

In verse 2 we read that Joseph brought to his father an evil report of his brothers. Notice however the wording here in Hebrew

Et-dibatam raah
13

! H1681 %, /, . dibba!h from H1680 slander: defaming, evil report, infamy, slander. In other words, Joseph did not bring just an evil report back about his brothers, but he brought back an evil, slanderous report. Its the exact same type of report the 10 spies brought back after Moshe had sent them to spy out the land. ! And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. ! 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Num 13:32-33 KJV) ! And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, ! 37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD. (Num 14:36-37 KJV) An evil report doesnt have to be false
14

! What is the heart behind it ! There is a difference between being a watchman and being a slanderer ! The ten spies came back with an evil report, they reported the facts as seen without faith ! They undercut the character of the land ! They lowered faith in YHWH ! If were cutting down the character of a brother or sister to gain favor w/someone (even ourselves) check your motives ! So be careful the words you speak. Evil speaking reveals whats already in your heart ! For his mouth speaks what overflows from his heart. (Luk 6:45 CJB) ! 26 Anyone who thinks he is religiously observant but does not control his tongue is deceiving himself, and his observance counts for nothing. ! So here we see Joseph, Jacobs heir apparent, seventeen and finely appareled in his Coat of Many Colors. Aside from the slanderous reports Joseph brought
18

his father, he walked about in a special coat Jacob had made him. The significance of the coat is not necessarily found in the fact that Jacob made Joseph a coat and not one for his brotheralthough Scripture does not express it, it is possible the brothers may have had one as well. But the significance lie in what the coat represented. ! 18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. (2Sa 13:18 KJV) ! (Jdg 5:30 KJV) ! 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. ! And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
21

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: (Luk 15:20-22 KJV)

In a small study, we find the word used here for best in the Greek comes from Strongs #4413:

'(##$) protos {pro'-tos} Meaning: 1) first in

time or place 1a) in any succession of things or persons 2) first in rank 2a) influence, honour 2b) chief 2c) principal 3) first, at the first . As just seen in Luke 15:22, speaking of the Best Robe. Protos is the same root word found in Matthew 1:25 ! Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. (Mat 1:24-25 KJV) The word here in this verse for firstborn comes from Strongs#4416:

'(&#$#$!$) prototokos {pro-tot-ok'-os}

Josephs Coat of Many colors established him as Jacobs FIRSTBORNbut Joseph was not the firstborn, who was? Reuben! So why didnt Reuben have the coat of many colors? We read ! It was while Isra'el was living in that land that Re'uven went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine, and Isra'el heard about it. Ya'akov had twelve sons. (Gen 35:22 CJB) For historical reference, what we read in the book of Yasher, tells us that when Rachel died, Jacob mourned over her deeply, as Rachel was his first-love. But when he turned for comfort over his loss he instead to chose to go into Bilhahs tent, Rachels handmaidrather than go into Leahs tentwho is mother of Reuben. So Reuben lost the birthright the day he committed such an act of rebellion and Israel knew it. ! Here is the history of Ya'akov. When Yosef was seventeen years old he used to pasture the flock with his brothers, even though he was still a boy. (Gen 37:2 CJB) Several rabbinic scholars argue this point, but the Hebrew bears it out to mean that because Scripture makes reference to Joseph being 17, and still a boyit indicates that he behaved much like a boy stillacting immaturely, fixing his hair and adorning his eyes. Similarly, Sforno
21

highlights his immaturity: he brought slanderous reorts about his brothers to his father without realizing the possible dire consequences.(Onkelos Targum, footnote p.247). So here we have a framework to operate within, some contextbut before we proceed I want to point out that Joseph is argued by most to be a prefigure of Messiah some argue there are up to exactly 100 parallels between Josephs life and the Messiah. Let us touch on just a few, the following have been borrowed from our helpful teacher Mr. Arthur W. Pink: ! The Meaning of his Name. It is significant that he had two namesJoseph, and Zaphnath-paaneah (41:45) which the rabbis translate Revealer of Secrets. The latter name was given to him by Pharaoh in acknowledgment of the Divine wisdom which was in him. Thus, Joseph may be said to be his human name and his Divine name. So also, the one whom Joseph foreshadowed has a double nameJesus being His human name, Christ signifying the Anounted of GOD, or , again, we have his double name in Son of Man which speaks of His humanity, and Son of God which tells of His Deity. Joseph means adder, the first Adam was the great subtractor, the last Adam is the great Adder through the one, men became lost; by the other, all who believe are saved. Josephs
22

second name means Revealer of secrets. How strikingly this foreshadowed Christ, of whom it was said in the days of His infancy, Behold this Child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken againthat the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Luke 2:3435) ! By occupation Joseph was a shepherd, feeding the flock. (Gen. 37:2). No figure of Christ is more beautiful than this: our favorite Psalm (the 23rd), as both were sent to find the Lost Sheep of Israel! ! Joseph is hated because of his Words. They hated him and could not speak peaceably to him. And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words. Yeshua said But now ye seek to kill Me, a man that hath told the truth, which I have heard of God (John 8:40). ! Joseph was sent by his father. Come, I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I (Gen. 37:12, 13). Yeshua said Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins (John 4:10). ! Joseph was conspired against. And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him (Gen. 37:18).
23

Speaking of Yeshua, Then the Pharisees went out and held a council against Him, how they might destroy Him (Matt. 12:14). ! Joseph is sold. They drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites (Gen 37:28). Is it not exceedingly striking to note that from among the twelve sons of Jacob Judah should be the one to make this horrible bargain, just as from the 12 apostles Judas (the Anglecized form of the Greek equivalent of Judah) was the one to sell the LORD. This is by far not an exhaustive list, and many of these for the sake of time have been pared back to make for quicker reading. Suffice it to say Joseph is a forerunner of Messiah. ! And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? (Gen 37:15 KJV)

%& 0, & 1 = ta`ah {taw-aw'} Meaning: 1) to err, wander,

go astray, stagger 1a) (Qal) to err 1a1) to wander about (physically) 1a2) of intoxication 1a3) of sin (ethically) 1a4) wandering (of the mind). Where was Joseph? Wandering in the field

24

The field is a picture of living outside the camp, outside the tent, outside the safety of Torahand it says Joseph was wandering (of the mind perhaps?) in the field. The man there tells him they went to Dothan, so Joseph proceeds toward Dothantending to the needs of the flock. We read of the brothers conspiring to kill Joseph but instead Reuben talks them out of it, and they decide to cast him into a well without watersymbolic of a tombas Yeshua was in the earth in the tomb. They lift Joseph out and sell him per Yehudahs suggestion for 20 pieces of silver. Reuben comes back, tears his outer garmentthey devise the plan to take the tip of Josephs coat and to dip it in blood of an animal and give it to Jacob. They tell Jacob: !
