Brief synopsis of events regarding AAL11 /UAL 175 *

Note, this came to commission as part of FAA massive delivery in response to subpoena
action. It is apparently a version of the draft chronology referred to by Mike McCormick

1237 BOS supervisor advises Area C supervisor possible hijack last known Alt FL290
BOS LAX B767 no communications AALl 1.

1238 Area C supervisor calls RKA CPC to inquire about AALl 1 position and is advised
is a confirmed hijack.

1239 Conference call with ATSCC and BOS/military discussing AALl 1 situation.

1239 ZNY R42 had initiated a track on primary target heading southbound.

1240 STMC calls American Airlines who verifies they believed the crew may not be in
control of aircraft.

1240 CPC sector 42 asks USA aircraft to look for the AALl 1 flight.

1241 UAL175 initial contact ZNY sector 42.

1241 UAL175 advises heard suspicious transmission after departure from BOS and
waited to make contact with NY Center to advise.

1242 CPC R42 contacts IGN CPC advises of UAL 175 transmission.

1242 STMC points out American primary to TRACON.

1243 ZNY ATM went to ZNY Area B and asked if OS and OMIC was aware of AALl 1.
OS was aware and initiating coordination with sectors. OMIC was aware and initiating
coordination with ATCSCC.

1244 ZNY ATM informed by Area B OSIC, Area B CIC, that R42 never had
communication with AALl 1. ZNY ATM called N90 OMIC to warn them to look for
primary target in vicinity of Hudson River southbound toward Manhattan.

1244 ZNY ATM Received text page from Ron Ruggeri concerning a confirmed hijack in
progress, AALl 1, BOS to LAX. Last known altitude FL290, transponder off, primary
target turned southbound vicinity of ALB.

1244 USA aircraft advises receiving ELT on 121.5 briefly and gone.

1245 UAL aircraft advises received ELT but faint.

1245 ZNY ATM asks Area B OS & CIC to coordinate for fighter intercept on hijack
aircraft.

1245 STMC points out American primary to ZDC ARTCC.

1250 An aircraft on sec 42 frequency advises he sees smoke over by World Trade
Center.

1251 UAL175 asked to recycle transponder by CPC 42.

1252 UAL175 is called by CPC 42.

1252 DAL is asked if he reads NY and gets a response.

1252 CPC 42 asks IGN CPC to check for UAL175 on his frequency.

1253 CPC 42 told negative by IGN CPC on UAL175.

1253 CPC42 calls CPC 10 asks if he sees UAL175 and advises him to watch for beacon
code 3321 we don't know who he is or what he is doing.

1254 CPC 42 asks UAL175 if he reads NY.

1254 ZNY ATM observes target on R42 and R55 display heading toward NYC. ZNY
ATM attempts several phone calls to AEA ATD to warn of another hijack and probable
second attack on WTC. N90 OMIC informs ZNY ATM that EWR ATCT reports an
aircraft crashed in the World Trade Center. ZNY ATM warns N90 that more is going on
and that there is more than one hijack. Additional hijack may be headed toward NYC.

1254 USA aircraft advises CPC 42 that a commuter aircraft was believed to have hit
World Trade Center and asks if that 76 is still in the air.

1255 ZNY ATM sends QA Manager to watch CNN to get idea of WTC impact and
update on UAL 175.

1301 CIC Area B advises OMIC UAL175/ 3321 code in sector 42 heading towards NY.

1303 ZNY watches UAL 175 target disappear on ZNY R55.

1303 ZNY is advised aircraft hit WTC.

1304 ZNY OMIC directs STMCs to stop all traffic into NYARTCC.

1304 ZNY MLS notifies ZNY ATM that military aircraft are scrambled and requests
current location of aircraft. ZNY ATM notifies him that the aircraft appears to have

crashed in the same location. ZNY AATM notified ATM that second aircraft crashed into
WTC with live pictures on CNN.

1305 ZNY ATM directs OMIC to declare ATC 0.

1305 All international oceanic traffic within ZNY was told to divert to alternate
destinations.

1305 ZNY ATM holds quick meeting with all managers and AF and notifies them of
hijack and collisions. Security is immediately elevated, the front gates were closed,
visitor were escorted and positive ID checks instituted.

1310 ZNY ATM briefs all OSICs in a round up of hijack activity, ATC 0 and elevated
security. ZNY ATM requires enhanced alert and requires immediate report of unusual
activity to MLS & OMIC for possible intercept.

1315 ZNY ATM directed to attend national TELCON.
