WEDNESDAY, 16 OCTOBER

From the President of AGCAS the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services
Welcome to the Scottish Graduate Fair 2013, an event designed to help you think about your future and meet potential employers. And, whatever people might say, there are plenty of employers who are keen to talk to and recruit graduates like you. Today is a great opportunity to meet some of them. It will pay to spend some time reading through the following pages. Decide which employers interest you most. Reflect on what you have to offer. Consider what you want each employer to know about you. Think about the sorts of questions youd like to ask them. Preparation such as this will really pay off and ensure that you get the most out of your visit. You can also discover other sources of information and advice. Scottish higher education careers services have a stand here today, where you can get on-the-spot careers advice as well as learn more about the huge range of services and resources at your own institution. My association, AGCAS, is here too. Were the professional body for careers and employability professionals working with higher education students and graduates, as well as with prospective entrants to higher education. We provide training, resources and services to help keep our members well-informed and up-to-date. We also help to organise events like this one. AGCAS researches and writes a wealth of material to help you plan your future. You will be able to see examples on our stand today. You can access it all on the Prospects (www.prospects.ac.uk), TARGETjobs (www.targetjobs.co.uk) and our own (www.agcas.org.uk) websites. I hope you find the fair enjoyable and useful and that it helps you on your journey to a satisfying career.

Paul Redmond AGCAS President

making the most of the fair

Students of earlier years
Looking for work experience? Many exhibitors offer internships or placements. This enhances your CV, gives you an insight into an organisation and lets you see if you would like to join them after graduation. Competition for places is keen, so you should: Research the employers websites and opportunities on your Careers Service's website Know what you are looking for and what you can offer Introduce yourself positively and ask sensible questions

Finalists/Postgraduates
The Fair provides an ideal opportunity to plan ahead for your job search or further study. Use the event to: Find out about vacancies on offer next year Talk directly to employers to get an insight into their organisation and selection criteria Get advice from the experts on how to improve your job search techniques Meet representatives of several universities At this early stage in the year, employers will not be interviewing you for their future vacancies that comes later in the selection procedure but research done now will save you time and effort later. Your Careers Service is in regular contact with a wide range of employers. Check with them for other first semester activities which they might be organising to help you plan ahead: Employer presentations on campus Careers Information events / fairs Access to thousands of vacancies on your Careers Service's website

Graduates
To get the best out of the Fair, you need to be organised and well prepared. Be realistic. No matter how brilliant you are, no-one is going to offer you a job on the spot. Organisations with immediate vacancies use the Fair to identify suitable candidates. They then follow them up after the event. To give yourself the maximum chance of making the right impression, use the following check list: Be clear about the type of work you are seeking and why you would be good at it Use this brochure to find out which employers have relevant vacancies Find out more about the employers before you go and talk to their representatives. Check if your Careers Service has employers website addresses, brochures or DVDs Be able to explain why you are interested in their organisation and what you can offer The Fair will be busy and you will only have a short time to make an impact. Asking vague questions and being unclear about your career interests will get you nowhere. If you are sure that it is impressive, you may take along copies of your CV to give to employers but be aware that many may ask you to apply on-line Use your time with employers to find out details which may not be in their website - e.g. location of vacancies, policy on recruitment of international graduates Make a note of the name of the person you talked to it will give you a contact to follow up later

Notes for international job seekers

It helps to know what to expect at a UK graduate recruitment fair as it may be different from fairs overseas. The purpose of these events in the UK is for employers to raise awareness of graduate opportunities. They are not hiring fairs at which visitors will be offered jobs right away. Employers are happy to answer your questions, but they expect you to submit an application or a CV at a later date and go through their selection process, involving interviews and possibly psychometric tests and assessment centres. Your Careers Service can help you to prepare for all these stages of the selection process.

We advise all jobseekers to ask questions that show your genuine interest in the company and the jobs on offer. Make sure you have read the information on the company website, including the information relevant to your situation. Look at the information contained in Making the most of the Fair on page 4 on how to do this. Although you need to ask questions about opportunities for overseas graduates, asking about this straight away could suggest that this is your primary concern. Learn about the schemes under which you can apply for employment in the UK before you go. www.ukcisa.org.uk explains the options for employment in the UK. Be ready to explain these options.

Find out just how much an idea can achieve.
