H!k"lea embarks on a world wide voyage

The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) was created to study Hawaiis old culture, past, and legacy. PVS built two voyaging canoes: the H!k"lea and the Hawai'iloa. The H!k"lea was built to bring back the culture of the ancient Hawaiian and Polynesians.
One of the H!k"lea's most well known voyages was in 1976, from Tahiti to Hawaii. The H!k"lea is sailed only by ancient Polynesian techniques for navigation. The H!k"lea has traveled to Tahiti, Micronesia, Polynesia, Japan, Canada, and the United States. The purpose of the H!k"lea was to bring back ancient culture and to discover how the Hawaiians lived then, how they navigated and how they traveled to many of the islands in the Pacic. One of the H!k"lea's journeys was to one of the most remote island in the world, Rapa Nui. Another purpose of the journey is to inspire people to achieve their hopes. The H!k"lea is headed for another journey, a grand one, a worldwide voyage. The idea started in 1992, when one of the crew members met some friends who were astronauts. One of the friends talked about when in space, Earth looks like an island, just like Hawaii. Then, in 2007, during the voyage to Satawal, the worldwide voyage became a step closer to happening. On May 29th, 2013, the H!k"lea set sail on the journey, expecting to come back in 2017. On the worldwide voyage, the H!k"lea will travel to twenty-eight countries,

and will stop at 85 international ports. The H!k"lea will sail for about four years at the cost of 30 million dollars. As Nainoa Thompson said: "During this voyage, H!k"lea is carrying the hopes, aspirations, and dreams of the many people who cared for her and touched her. We hope that this voyage inspires us and creates opportunities for us to be a community that's dened not by (continued on page 3)

Hokuleaa with Ms.L-M.

by Colin Yeo Have you heard about a canoe named the H!k"lea? Well, it's more than just a canoe. It's a piece of evidence that proves that the Polynesians could sail from Hawaii to Tahiti without the aid of instruments such as charts, clocks, and compasses. %The Hokule'a was built in the spring of 1975, and sailed its rst voyage in the year of 1976. After that rst voyage, it made 7 other voyages. The H!k"lea was about 14 feet wide from one outer edge to the other, and about 62 feet long. I interviewed an eighth grade teacher, Mrs. LymanMersereau, to learn more information about the H!k"lea. But you might ask, why her? And thats true. There are many people on the Punahou campus who have been on the H!k"lea. I chose Mrs. LM because she helped build the H!k"lea in 1974.

My interview with Mrs. LymanMersereau not only inspired me to take more risks, but it showed me how determination and hard work can take you a long way. In this case, Mrs. Lyman-Mersereaus rst journey failed, but she and the crew were determined to make the journey, and on their second attempt, they succeeded. By choosing to go on this journey Mrs. LymanMersereau showed great courage and a sense of adventure. She is a true inspiration to us all.

Why did you decide to embark on this journey on the H!k"lea? When I nished college in 1974 and heard about this event from my brother about sailing this double hulled canoe from Hawaii to Tahiti, I wanted a little adventure. I helped build H!k"lea because I wanted to be part of the rst crew. Our rst journey ended up with the H!k"lea face down and us in the water. After a couple hours, a rescue helicopter came and got us out of the water, and about a week or two later, we gave the journey another attempt. Did you encounter any challenges on the H!k"lea? I was seasick for the rst four days, and ended up skipping all meals for the rst four days and nights. I thought I was the only one who was seasick, but it turns out that everyone was a bit seasick. They just weren't as bad off as I was. %There was also a lot of rough water as we set out on our voyage, which was a partial cause of our seasickness. What was daily life on the H!k"lea' like? Once we set our course, the canoe pretty much sailed herself. We would just have to set the sail and steering blades to sail in the direction we were going. The crew was divided into watch times, and there were about seven people on a watch. I would usually help our cook get our food out from the storage. Our diet consisted of freeze dried Chicken Ala King and freeze dried Beef Stroganoff and fresh sh when we caught it. The head cook at Punahou at the time, Tita Lyons, prepared all the meals we took on the voyage. Crewmembers read or wrote in their journals. I brought my guitar and played a lot. Meal time was always the highlight of the day especially if we caught a sh.

Understanding Syrias Problem

by Elizabeth Leyshon Middle schoolers throughout the United States have been wondering what is really happening in Syria, and what is the cause of this international outrage? %%% If we want to understand we must look to Syria's past to understand why this civil war is going on. You can't just ask yourself what is happening. Instead, you have to ask yourself what has happened. Over time Syrians have made many foes and allies, their allies including some neighboring Middle Eastern countries. Their foes include France, which in the early 1900's over took Syria and divided it unevenly, causing many people of different religions to be forced together. When France abandoned Syria in 1946, Syria was displaced and had no leader, so from 1958 till 1961 it was joined with Egypt and the UAR; (United Arab Republic). But Syria's growing dissatisfaction with the Egyptian domination made Syria leave their partnership with the UAR, causing another period in instability for Syria. In 1963, the Arab Social Resurrection (Baath) Party, along

with Arab nationalists, took rm control of Syria. This time was known as the Baath Revolution, and then Hafez al Assad took the assumption of power. Assad was pronounced president 1971; his presidency lasted for thirty years, until he died in 2000. His son Bashar al Assad ran for president. He ran unopposed and was quickly elected as president. In the thirty years of Hafez' presidency, he had outlawed any opposing political party. The Syrian government also blocked and censored many global websites with local appeal, such as Facebook and Youtube. In 2011 peaceful protesters began to protest, inspired by recent

protests in Egypt and Tunisia. The government has been accused of opposing these protests and quietly killing activists and protesters. The protests then escalated to not only the activists, but their families, also. Eventually, civilians started to re at the government in return, until it turned into a civil war. This civil war has been going on for two years and is still going on today. The reason why we are hearing about it in the news more than ever now is because the government has allegedly used chemical weapons against its own people. More recently Russia and the US have worked out their disputes. Russia has agreed to stop providing weapons for the Syrians, if the US doesnt launch an attack on Syria. The US and Russia have also worked out a few steps to try to convince the Syrian government to hand over the chemical weapons they are accused of having. Some American people think that even if Syria does hand over the weapons, it will do no good in stopping the civil war. But, at least there will be easy sleeping knowing we dont have the threat of chemical weapons.

Jeans, right now in style are skinny jeans that either have prints or colors on them, jeansmeaning pants that go down to your ankle, but if you dont want to wear long jeans you could wear long shorts that go just above your knees. For accessories, in school I have noticed that the types of jewelry that are popular are simple pieces like shell bangles. Bangles are wire bracelets usually complemented with a shell or maybe a sea glass piece. On the other hand we have watches. One of the most in style watches is, we all know, Nixons. Nixon watches come in all styles. Fanart is an artists own thing, except it is based off something real. But what if it was banned? What if it was banned along with other fanmade materials? The act to declare fanmade material illegal was called SOPA Fanart is usually made by online artists. Most artists draw them digitally yet some choose to make them hand drawn. SOPA is just the record industries trying to make money. Its not really about piracy, and it goes way too far. graphite. Erasers help erase pencil markings by lifting the graphite from the paper. As the pencil moves, the graphite from the pencil sticks onto the small particles of paper ber. Erasers are made out of petroleum-based rubber compounds. This is because the polymer that the eraser is made up of is stickier than the paper. Furthermore, the graphite is then absorbed by the eraser, and POOF,say goodbye to those pencil marks! What kinds of erasers work best? Its hard to name a branded eraser that works the best though, there are certain tricks you can use to gure out which ones wont be

White vinyl erasers erase in a cleaner way than the standard-issue pink vinyl eraser. This is because they are made of a softer vinyl. Kneaded erasers are moldable and soften when you knead them. They are one of the softer types o f e ra s e r s , a s t h ey e a s i l y obliterate graphite, charcoal, and lead. This is because kneaded erasers are stic ky enough to remove the graphite with ease. Before t here were rubber erasers, people used pieces of bread to discard pencil markings. This is because rolled up pieces of white bread were able to erase portions of the graphite. What if rubber was never introduced and everyone just used pieces of bread to erase markings? It might seem a bit strange, but hey, its convenient: an eraser and a snack! Pencil erasers are not the only erasers now, and for certain not all of them are made of rubber. For example, in most digital art programs (such as Photoshop), it is most likely to nd an eraser tool that removes markings from the

Do you know how tall you will be? Predicting Growth

by Clarise Huang Have you ever wondered how tall you will be? For a lot of us, we hope that we keep growing until we reach our desired height. There are many components that might determine how tall a person may be: genes, malnutrition, and sleep. There are also many abnormalities or diseases which can affect or change a person's height. You may want to know how tall you'll be, and there are ways to guess, but you wont know your final height until you reach it. Factors of Growth

You probably have been told that 8 hours of sleep is the proper amount of sleep you should get. That is true, but your posture while you sleep is also important. While you sleep, you should lie straight without curving your body. This helps your body grow properly.

Taller people have a greater risk of getting cancer. Although, shorter people have more of a risk at getting a heart disease. Abnormally tall people don't tend to live as long as most people. Robert Wadlow, tallest person in the world, 8 feet and 11 inches tall, died at age 22. Also, at the end of the day, you could be up to an inch shorter than you were in the morning. Taller people tend to be more successful in many things, in most sports you have an advantage

Injuries involving growth plates, depending on the severity, can stunt or alter growth. Common injuries that affect growth are around the wrist and ankle. Abnormalities More than 50 bone diseases can affect your height and growth. Achondroplasia is the most common one. Achondroplasia is a disease that makes the child's arms and length short compared to their proportions. There are some treatments for height gain, although, they are usually expensive and painful. They can also create some other health issues, like allergies, diabetes, cholesterol, liver disorder, or increased tissue stiffness.
