Antwerp commemorates the centenary of the First World War

From a historical perspective Antwerp has several reasons to commemorate the beginning of World War I in 2014. As the National Rduit Antwerp briey became the temporary capital of Belgium and home to the government, parliament, the army, the royal family and diplomats. The imposing double belt of fortresses prompted a large number of refugees to travel to the city. After the fall of Antwerp they mainly ed to the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. The Peace Centre of the City and Province of Antwerp has joined forces with over fty partners in Belgium and abroad to put together an exciting cultural programme.

Antwerp will build a bridge across the Scheldt in Otober 2014

The highlight of the Antwerp 14-18 programme is the commemorative weekend on 3, 4 and 5 October with the construction of a temporary bridge across the River Scheldt, from Steen fortress to the Left Bank. One hundred years ago the Belgian army built a pontoon bridge across the Scheldt in this same location at the beginning of World War I. The bridge allowed the army to supply the National Rduit of Antwerp as well as providing for a quick evacuation. The construction of the pontoon bridge started on 2 August 1914. It was blown up upon the fall of Antwerp on 9 October 1914. In 2014 Belgian and Dutch engineer batallions will build a new Peace Bridge as a symbol of the connection between past, present and future.
