AS/A Levels are made up of six units. The first three units make up the AS Level, which is a qualification in its own right. The second three units taken in the second year of study are called A2 and need to be completed to make up the full A level. An A2 is not a qualification in its own right. City College Coventry is the biggest further education provider of A levels in the city and offers a wide range of AS and A2 programmes. In their first year, students normally choose four subjects and take their three best subjects into the second year to A2 level.

from Cruella deville to an avant garde Bride on the City College CatWalk
Hair and beauty students at City College Coventry have produced a high-energy fashion show that pushed the boundaries and demanded attention. With a theme of Equality and Diversity, designed to allow total flexibility, the students let their creative imaginations run wild as they brought to life their own designs. There were demons, unicorns, designs inspired by sweet shops, candy floss and the Arabian Knights and Cruella Daville and Rapunzel were side by side on the catwalk. The students produced every element from make-up and costumes to the integral hair ornamentation that included the dramatic wefts of hair required for the Avant Garde pieces. Speaking of her admiration for the hard work and commitment shown by all the students, course organiser Karen Walls said: The students and tutor team put in an incredible amount of time and effort in the weeks preceding the show. They worked as a unit to quickly tackle any hiccups along the way and put on a spectacular, eye-catching show and their team spirit meant they actively encouraged and supported each other. Im incredibly proud of them. The hair and beauty students collaborated with those studying performing arts, media and photography to put on the final show. Those doing media studies produced professional VTs of the catwalk show; the performing arts students choreographed and performed a series of dances designed to highlight the central creations and the photographic students took a series of stills that are now displayed throughout the College.
