ENGL 1101-062 18 November 2013 The Return: A Rhetorical Analysis Commercials are one of the biggest tactics the media uses to persuade our society. They are short in time, so we do not lose interest, they are repetitive so we will see it over and over, and they are also everywhere; there is no way we can avoid them. YouTube is a great way to share these commercials because once you watch one, you are bound to watch commercials that are similar, which YouTube conveniently has on the side of the screen. Anyone can make a video selling you something, not just big named industries. Normally, I would steer clear of videos made by people who are not creditable, but one video caught my interest. Derrick Rose is a professional basketball player who is apart of the Chicago Bulls team. He was selected first overall in the draft in 2008, when his career in the NBA started. In the 2009-2010 season, Derrick started with ankle injury, which caused him to miss the rest of the preseason. Once his ankle healed, his game had improved, allowing him to be elected into his first career All Star Game. On May 3, 2011 Derrick was named the NBA MVP (most valuable player) and joined Michael Jordan as the only players to receive MVP in the history of the Chicago Bulls team. The following year, during Game One of the first round of the playoffs, the unthinkable happened. He injured his knee in the middle of jumping and was immediately assisted off of the court. He finished the game with 23 points, 9 assists, and 9 rebounds, only playing 37 minutes. An MRI later

Wall 2 confirmed that Derrick had torn the ACL in his left knee and would not be participating in the rest of the season. Surgery was performed on May 12, 2012 and Derrick was expected to recover in 8 to 12 months. He returned to full contact practice in January 2013. Despite getting cleared to play in March, he did not appear in a game during the 2012-2013 season. A long awaited return came on October 5, 2013 during a pre-season game. He finished that game with 13 points, playing only 20 minutes. On October 16, 2013 he returned to Chicago to play for the first time, scoring 22 points against the Detroit Pistons. After the game win Derrick went on to say, I think Im way more explosive now. Like getting to the rim. I think I can take contact a little bit better. And as far as jumping-wise, I think I can jump even higher. They tested my verticalI increased it by 5 inches. Many of Derrick Roses commercials had an underlying message, just like any other commercial. At first I was using a commercial that was big on TV when Derrick Rose announced his return. Even though it contained the most important message, which was his return, the commercial was trying to sell his brand of shoes at the same time. I did not want to use any commercial that contained more than one message, which was how he was making a return to the NBA after his ACL injury. This seemed like it would be impossible but I came across a Youtube video made by a fan. Granted this limits the creditably and identity of the creator, but it was too good of a video to look past. He used clips from Derrick Roses games in the NBA to tell a story. There was only one message; Derrick Rose was a phenomenal player before his injury and came back an even better player after it. After watching the video, you will believe that Derrick Rose is a powerful player and an injury could not stop him, even if you had no idea who he was.

Wall 3 Since the video is on YouTube and not a big commercial, the audience consists of people who either are fans of Derrick Rose who want to support him, or opposers who watch the video and broadcast their opinions. The target audience would of course be fans, since it is a fan video. The video influences the audience to feel like Derrick Rose will come back a stronger force. The creator uses pathos throughout the whole video. In the first clip the audience sees when Derrick Rose gets injured. Seeing this initially makes us feel sad and hopeless because we see the pain in his face as he holds on to his knee. He follows that scene with clips of Derrick Roses best performances, which include various dunks, clutch lay-ups and a three pointer that won a game. Seeing this delivers hope to the audience that his return will be a great one. Along with the powerful footage he uses an instrumental song that is dramatic, which adds suspense. As far as ethos goes, the creator is unknown so there is no way to know if he or she is credible. The creator did use real footage of NBA games, and the NBAs credibility speaks for itself. The video is very logical because its only purpose is showing the talent of Derrick Rose. The audience is persuaded to feel that he is a great player but after watching the clips, there is no doubt about his strength. The video does not need a spokesperson telling the audience what was happening because it is implied through the clips and the commentators. When Derrick Rose went down, one commentator says Rose came down bad on his left foot, see him? Holding on to his knee, holding on to his knee and down. This phrase was used in the commercial aired on TV so whenever you hear it, you automatically should know that it relates to Derrick Rose. Sometimes less is more, and in this video simplicity is what makes it enjoyable. The NBA is a huge industry that brings in a lot of money. Fan videos like

Wall 4 this one might seem irrelevant since they are not on TV, but a lot of fans of the NBA use YouTube to watch highlights and stay up to date with their favorite players. The Derrick Rose Return video caught my interest, and I am quite certain it touched thousands of other Derrick Rose fans as well. On November 22, he tore his right knee meniscus and was advised that surgery would be required. One the same day Derrick Rose completed a successful surgery and the Chicago Bulls announced that he would be out for the season. Since Derrick Rose has numerous injuries in his past, people might lose hope in his ability to stay healthy and stay in the NBA. Advertisements after this recent injury could either be positive, like the first Return or it could be negative, by persuading people to give up on him. The choice is up to the audience.
