The information delivered in this report is based on minutes taken by the IMC Export and Tourism fellows. It can be seen as a summary of what has been presented and discussed during the meetings in Indonesia and Thailand. Due to misunderstandings or misperceptions on the part of the participants, these minutes may be subject of errors. Therefore, any quotation from this text is discouraged.
Foreword
Understanding that for every small countrys sustained development, the export dynamics are an imperative; Republic of Austria had launched the initiative for creation of the new type of university already in the mid-1990s. This perfectly matched with the EU Lisbon strategy which by 2000 announced that Europes further development can only be achieved by departing from the industrial to post-industrial, knowledge-based economy without compromising the environment and by reconciling the economic advancement with the preservation of social security and political liberties. This new type of university the so-called universities of applied sciences, paved the way for the foundation of the IMC. The IMC Export Management program EUASAEAN NAFTA chose English as its only language of instruction, put the strong focus to other foreign languages; French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and Arabic have been introduced alongside the two obligatory practical training semesters by which students have been required to work minimum 22 weeks abroad in their respective 4th and 7th semester. Substantive focus of the Program has been on the three majors: Foreign Trade & Intl. Marketing (i), Intercultural Management (ii) and Intl. Law and Global Political Studies (iii), parallel to the three geographic focuses: on the EU, ASEAN and MERCOSUR-NAFTA. This indeed internationalized the IMC Export fellows right now there are students & graduates working and studying on literary every continent and corner of the globe. Repeatedly, by different surveys in past 7-8 years, the IMC University has been proclaimed as one of the best in the EU, and its Export program has by far the best employability score in all of Austria (by independent rankings of Industriele and Gewine magazines as well as the official State office of Employment AMS). The unemployment rate of the IMC EXP graduates in last 5 years was 1,7% only far bellow of any EU or Austrian average. Chairperson for the International Law and Global Political Studies, Prof. Bajrektarevic is an Acting Deputy Study Director, and the longest serving member of the EXP team. Besides teaching subjects of Geo-political Affairs, Sustainable Development (Institutions and Instruments of, incl. the Environmental Ethics) and the Intl. Law and Law of IOs and EU, he is extensively publishing and guest lecturing all over the globe. Finally, using his extensive diplomatic contacts, Prof. Bajrektarevic has organized some 120 round-tables and events in the past two decades; was hosting close to 100 ambassadors, dozens of ministers and state secretaries, three EU commissioners, and was drafting and
conducting over twenty study trips to the relevant International FORA in Vienna, Geneva and Paris1.
By early 2009, Prof. Bajrektarevic has conceptualized (in a close cooperation with the Austrian business, Trade Chamber, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Export graduates) a new project the so-called Employability Booster. Named the Business Focus Study Trip, this unique concept, which by its vision and passion links the best of public diplomacy and business networking, aimed to horizontalize the vision and idea, institutions and instruments of great EU and ASEAN model of life, and to compare and contrast two selected countries of a particular region in which the senior students and recent graduates will be exposed for the two-week time. Currently, the similar project is under preparation for the Central Asia and for the MERCOSUR (Latin American countries) as well as the follow up of the third BF ASEAN. The ASEAN itself is a very dynamic regional grouping which is not well represented and understood in the EU. With 580 million people and a combined GDP ( 1,1500 billion for 2009) ASEAN has a bigger economy then India, and not too far from China this is a fact which is nearly unknown in Europe. On the other side, the ASEAN has no deeper insights into the affairs of the EU. (Actually, for both groupings the deeper integration processes have

consumed so much energy that to the outside world they often look like inward looking, introverted blocks which of course neither ASEAN nor the EU wants to be.) Feeling the need to close this knowledge-gap, Prof. Bajrektarevic was aiming its first Business Focus to ASEANs vibrant and dynamic countries of Malaysia and Thailand.
In September of 2009, some 30 Export senior students and recent graduates (of 7 nationalities) have
experienced 15 remarkable days in two Asian countries residing in the heart of SEA; over 60 hours of in-house lectures and 30 hours of study/cultural outdoor visits, 40 speakers of 19 nationalities (among which 15 field experts of senior level), also 4 ambassadors, one minister, one senator, Sultan of Perlis and late Malaysian king, as well as the Kings brother - the State Secretary of Perlis in short, was an outcome of the BFA 2009 (for detailed overview, images, impressions and the particularities of the previous years programs, please refer to 160 page report http://www.scribd.com/doc/81873237/BFA-2009-Public-Diplomacy-Business-Networking ). Moreover, in late June/early July of 2010, the next group of 32 Export senior students and recent graduates (of 8 nationalities) have experienced 15 memorable days in two ASEAN countries: Indonesia and Malaysia. The score of BFA II is impressive: over 50 hours of inclass lectures have been conducted in the Diplomatic Academies of Indonesia and Malaysia as well as the HQ of ASEAN with the hospitality provided by the EU Delegation as well as the Austrian ambassadors in both countries (not to forget the courtesy visits and talks at the national Trade and Foreign ministries as well as local think-tanks). All together some 250 persons took part (including the young diplomats of both countries along the Export fellows). The BFA II group has been addressed by as many as 40 speakers of 15 nationalities (among which 25 field experts of senior level), including the ASEANs Deputy Secretary General, 4 Ministers and 6 ambassadors. The EXP fellows additionally experienced 40 hours of studycultural outdoor visits which included memorable cultural performances (including the behind-scene talks with artists as well as the visits to the country side, cultural sites and socalled home-stay) /The full account of the BFA 2010 report is obtainable under:

The vision to mobilize, expose and sensitize young fellows, to link two distant regions of the world for the good of both, to make new friendships and reaffirm old; all together the vision of inspiring, envisioning, encouraging, boosting and employing generations of young Europeans and Asians has become truth in September 2009 and again in early summer of 2010 to be repeated again early autumn of 2012. Affiliations and strong personal and professional bonds are created, they are to live and prosper. It is fair to say that the BFA 2009
and BFA 2010 participants are the young professionals who developed affiliation and strong personal and professional bonds with the ASEAN countries they visited, and these precious links are here to stay for many decades to come.
To effectively challenge the exceptionalism, ignorance and anti-intellectualism necessitates the constant efforts. This voyage is to continue eastward (CA, SEA) and westward (NAFTA, MERCOSUR), and Prof. Bajrektarevic has the sincere hope that business and governmental entities (on this or other sides of ocean) will recognize that the undertaking is not only about us, but also very much about the societies and business, and how we want to see out youth in the near future. For the third consecutive time, the Business Focus Study Trip will take place in Southeast Asia/ASEAN. From 07th to 23rd September, the IMC senior students and graduates over 30 of them will spend a week in each Indonesia/Jakarta and Thailand/Bangkok. The program will include ASEAN HQ, UN ESCAP, content intensive meetings with academia and practitioners (some 60 hours) as well as the rich intercultural exposure (some 40 hours). The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia, bordering Laos and the Kingdom of Cambodia to the east, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to the south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar to the west. Thailand is the world's 51st-largest country in terms of total area,

with an area of approximately 513,000 km2. Furthermore it is the 20th-most-populous country, with around 69.5 million people. The capital and largest city is Bangkok, which is Thailand's political, commercial, industrial and cultural hub. About 75% of the population is ethnically Thai, 14% is of Chinese origin, and 3% is ethnically Malay; the rest belong to minority groups including Mons, Khmers and various hill tribes.
Thailand is an emerging economy and considered as a newly industrialized country. After enjoying the world's highest growth rate from 1985 to 1996 averaging 12.4% annually. As such, Thailand has been one of the great development success stories, with sustained strong growth and impressive poverty reduction. In the decade that ended in 1995, the Thai economy was one of the world's fastest growing at an average rate of 8-9% per year. After recovering from the Asian Crisis of 1997-1998, the Thai economy took off again, with growth averaging about 5% per year in the period 2002-2007. Primarily due to the high rates of economic growth, poverty has been falling steadily since the late 1980s. Over the last decade, poverty has been reduced from its recent peak of 21% (a result of the 1997 crisis) to about 8% in 2009. Poverty in Thailand is primarily a rural phenomenon, with 88% of the country's 5.4 million poor living in rural areas.
However, benefits of Thailand's economic success have not been shared equally, with some regionsparticularly, the North and Northeastlagging behind the rest of the country in terms of poverty reduction. Furthermore, in 2010, Thailand's economic growth slowed because of global economic conditions and political uncertainty. However, Thailand's economic activity is gradually returning to normal, with quarterly economic growth rates now closer to the levels often seen before the global financial crisis began in 2008. As a result of sensible economic policies, Thailand continues to make progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is likely to meet most of the MDGs on an aggregate basis.
The maternal mortality and under-five mortality rates have been greatly reduced and more than 97% of the population, both in the urban and rural areas, now have access to clean water and sanitation. Nevertheless, there continue to be spatial variations with some regions and ethnic groups lagging behind, and there are some concerns about the environmental sustainability goal. http://www.worldbank.org/en/country/thailand/overview Due to Thailands progress in social and economic development the World Bank has upgraded Thailands income categorization from am lower-middle income economy to an upper-middle economy in July 2011.

Economic Forecast Real GDP in 2012 is projected to grow by 4.7 percent. It is supported mainly by household consumption and investments as part of flood rehabilitation and the governments consumption-stimulating measures. The economy is projected to grow by 5 percent in 2013 as manufacturing production fully recovers from the floods and the global economy sees a modest recovery. Exports in 2013 are expected to grow by 5.5 percent in US dollar terms, compared to only 3.6 percent in 2012. Domestic demand, particularly in investments, will continue its momentum from this year as foreign direct investment (FDI) rises sharply The main challenge in 2013 for Thailands growth continues to be the high uncertainty in global economic prospects, particularly related to the Eurozone crisis. To improve growth in the long-term, Thailand should prioritize skills development and the need to reduce inequalities in incomes and human development outcomes. Government spending could be prioritized from short-term stimulus programs and very costly ones like the paddy pledging scheme to long term development programs which targets lower income and vulnerable groups and also helps to reduce regional disparities.

Indonesia
Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia (Indonesian: Republik Indonesia Indonesian pronunciation: [rpblik ndonesia]), is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia is an archipelago comprising approximately 17,508 islands. It has 34 provinces with over 238 million people, and is the world's fourth most populous country. Indonesia is a republic, with an elected legislature and president. The nation's capital city is Jakarta. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Malaysia. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, Philippines, Australia, Palau, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Indonesia is a founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. The Indonesian economy is the world's sixteenth largest by nominal GDP and fifteenth largest by purchasing power parity.
The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade region since at least the 7th century, when Srivijaya and then later Majapahit traded with China and India. Local rulers gradually absorbed foreign cultural, religious and political models from the early centuries CE, and Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms flourished. Indonesian history has been influenced by foreign powers drawn to its natural resources. Muslim traders brought Islam, and European powers brought Christianity and fought one another to monopolize trade in the Spice Islands of Maluku during the Age of Discovery. Following three and a half centuries of Dutch colonialism, Indonesia secured its independence after World War II. Indonesia's history has since been turbulent, with challenges posed by natural disasters, corruption, separatism, a democratization process, and periods of rapid economic change.

Across its many islands, Indonesia consists of hundreds of distinct native ethnic and linguistic groups. The largestand politically dominantethnic group are the Javanese. A shared identity has developed, defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a majority Muslim population, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it. Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("Unity in Diversity" literally, "many, yet one"), articulates the diversity that shapes the country. Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness that support the world's second highest level of biodiversity. The country has abundant natural resources, yet poverty remains widespread. Economy Indonesia has a mixed economy in which both the private sector and government play significant roles. The country is the largest SEA economy and a member of the G-20 major economies. Indonesia's estimated gross domestic product (nominal), as of 2012 was US$928.274 billion with estimated nominal per capita GDP was US$3,797, and per capita GDP PPP was US$4,943 (international dollars). June 2011: At World Economic Forum on East Asia, Indonesian president said that his country will be in the top ten countries with the strongest economy within the next decade. The GDP is about $1 trillion and the debt ratio to the GDP is 26%.The industry sector is the economy's largest and accounts for 46.4% of GDP (2010), this is followed by services (37.1%) and agriculture (16.5%). However, since 2010, the service sector has employed more people than other sectors, accounting for 48.9% of the total labor force, this has been followed by agriculture (38.3%) and industry (12.8%). Agriculture, however, had been the country's largest employer for centuries.
Culture Indonesia has about 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities developed over centuries, and influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and European sources. Traditional Javanese and Balinese dances, for example, contain aspects of Hindu culture and
mythology, as do wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances. Textiles such as batik, ikat, ulos and songket are created across Indonesia in styles that vary by region. The most dominant influences on Indonesian architecture have traditionally been Indian; however, Chinese, Arab, and European architectural influences have been significant. Sports in Indonesia are generally male-orientated and spectator sports are often associated with illegal gambling.
A selection of Indonesian food, including roasted fish, nasi timbel (rice wrapped in banana leaf), sambal, fried tempeh and tofu, and sayur asem. Indonesian cuisine varies by region and is based on Chinese, European, MENA, and Indian precedents. Rice is the main staple food, served with side dishes of meat and vegetables. Spices (notably chili), coconut milk, fish and chicken are fundamental ingredients. The oldest evidence of writing in Indonesia is a series of Sanskrit inscriptions dated to the 5th century. Important figures in modern Indonesian literature include: Dutch author Multatuli, who criticized treatment of the Indonesians under Dutch colonial rule; Sumatrans Muhammad Yamin and Hamka, who were influential pre-independence nationalist writers and politicians; and proletarian writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Indonesia's most famous novelist. Many of Indonesia's peoples have strongly rooted oral traditions, which help to define and preserve their cultural identities.

Introduction ASEAN
one vision, one identity, one community
All big things start with a vision, so did our BFA study trip. It was the vision of Prof. Anis H. Bajrektarevi. For the third consecutive time Prof. Bajrektarevi brought together over 30 students of different nationalities from three continents (attached to the IMC University of Austria) a unique possibility for us to get to know to ASEAN but also to broaden our horizons, to discover truly different cultures, to mobilize ourselves, to think out of the box, to make new friendships and to form our own opinion. For all of us, this trip was an exceptional experience and for some it was much more we understood and we learned. We undertook a truly unique journey physically and mentally.
In the framework of the IMCs EXPORT Program, our professor has concepted and developed a unique program already by 2009 to link the best of public diplomacy with useful business networking. It is aid at to bring together senior students and recent graduates to contrast, compare and analyze two different countries, each of ASEAN, namely the Business Focus ASEAN BFA !!
In this world we have many vibrant and dynamic regions, which are economically successful and impressive. However, Asian countries are of particular interest for international businesses, diplomacy as well as for young professionals and students. The IMC fellows soon understood why there is a saying like this. With this report, we try to share our understanding, our experiences and our appreciation. In order to get to know the two countries as well as ASEAN a little bit more, our professor organized a lot of interesting events for us. We had a lot of speakers during these two really interesting weeks. They informed us about ASEAN, about Thailand and Indonesia in general and also heard a lot of interesting things about the Indonesian Stock Exchange for example. Some of our speakers were for example: Mr. Eduard E. Sugiri (Honorary Consul of Austria in Bandung), Mr. Wolfram Kalt (Director South Pacific Viscose), H.E. Ambassador Andreas Karabaczek, H.E. Ambassador Julian Wilson, Mr. Siswo Pramono, Mr. Imam Pambagio, H.E. Ambassador Johannes Peterlik, H.E. Ambassador David Lipman, Osama Rajkhan, Ms. Mia Mikic, and many more. And surely, one of our biggest angels and strongest advocates - H.E. Wesaka I. Puja, Director-General for the ASEAN Affairs of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, and former Indonesian Ambassador to Austria who was indispensable for the great outcome of our trip in both 2010 and again in 2012. Huge gratitude and enormous thanks to this great visionary official and humanist of little words but big deeds to all of us!!
In theory, one can always learn about certain countries, about their histories and their facts. But, in order to truly understand a country one has to experience it personally. One cannot think out of the box without hearing different opinions. Therefore this trip is probably one of the most valuable study trips for students to strengthen their own opinions, to explore and to enrich our way of thinking. For many of us this was our first trip to Asia and we were therefore very curious, we explored warm heartedness, hospitality, and cultural diversity. We met people with a completely
different background, different values and attitudes. Sometimes little things happen, which allow us to appreciate much more what we have and help us to stop complaining about things we do not have. Although each single student has its own story, background and own identity we share common beliefs that is why many of us sooner or later have experienced a cultural shock when we entered Indonesia and Thailand. A cultural shock is not a bad thing at all it just makes you thinking. Thinking what life is all about and where you see your path. A trip like this can accelerate to figure it out; at least it broadens your horizon. We are inviting you to learn more about our impressions, all the events and our guest speakers. First of all we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the person who made this trip possible Dr. Anis H. Bajrektarevi. We want to thank him for all his efforts and the time he spent preparing this trip. On Sunday, September 9th 2012 our first day on Java - we visited the geological museum of Bandung, where we saw the oldest fossil that has ever been found in history. We learned about the cradle of mankind and the development of human life. After that, we experienced our first Indonesian market and got a first valuable insight into the local
atmosphere.
After the visit of the Asian African museum we enjoyed our first traditional Indonesian meal. This is the setting where the historic Asian African Conference took place on the 18th April, 1955. This was the historic day when 29 Asian and African countries, most of whom had just liberated
themselves from colonial rule, gathered together to determine their own future. The participating countries were: Indonesia, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Cambodia, China, Cyprus, Egypt,

Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam and Yemen. This conference resulted in the Dasasila Bandung, which became the guideline for colonized countries to fight for their independence. The Dasasila Bandung also included the fundamental principles for promoting world peace and international cooperation. Moreover, the conference came up with a 10 Point declaration, the Bandung declaration, which became the cornerstone for the Non-Aligned Movement.
In the conference room where the Bandung conference was held we could find the Garuda Pancasila, which is installed above the stage. The Garuda, which means the eagle in Bahasa Indonesian, has the national motto: "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika", gripped by its legs, which means Unity in Diversity and represents the around 360 people that live in Indonesia. The shield represents the five principles of Indonesias philosophy, the belief in one supreme god (star), the Just and civilized humanity (chain), the unity of Indonesia (tree), democracy (bull) and Social Justice for the entire people of Indonesia (rice and cotton). The number of feathers symbolizes the date of the Indonesian Proclamation of Independence on August, 17th 1945. The well-organized excursion
continued with a Bamboo Afternoon Performance and we got familiar with the Angklung which is a popular instrument in the region. It is made of two bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. This spectacle was highly interactive and we were encouraged to participate. It was amazing to see the joy in the kids eyes while performing. In the very end we got to know an Indonesian who is holding the World Record in playing the Angklung with 8 000 people. He even told us

that he plans to break his own record next year in Beijing when playing with 15 000 people. In the evening we were invited to the Peak Restaurant by the Indonesian Consul. The restaurant was located at the highest point of whole Bandung, from where we had an impressive panorama view over the city and enjoyed once more a wonderful Indonesian buffet. The consule (name?) welcomed us very warmly and we got the unique opportunity to discuss our expectations and first impressions of Asia with his Excellency himself.
Each and every one enjoyed this outstanding evening. The atmosphere was a rather informal one and we immediately felt at ease. On top of that, it enabled us to socialize with other Indonesians while listening to a very good live-band. What a wonderful start into this years BFA trip!

10th of September 2012 South Pacific Viscose (LENZING Group)
Company visit at South Pacific Viscose The sound of viscose production To gain firsthand business experience we visited one company each in Indonesia and Thailand. For our first whole-day company visit, we were given the opportunity to visit South Pacific Viscose (SPV) located in Purwarkarta which is about a two-hours drive away from Jakarta. The company is one of the worlds largest viscose producers and an affiliate of the Upper-Austrian Lenzing Group. We left our residence in Bandung early in the morning. While our bus driver and his crew were plagued as usual with interminable traffic jams and narrow roads we had the chance to catch a little glimpse of the fauna and countryside of Java. After an exciting ride we finally arrived at around 10 a.m. at the premises of SPV where we were warmly welcomed by the management team led by CEO Dr. Wolfram Kalt. The visit began with an insightful presentation of SPV in general. Plant executives Mr. Knoglinger and Mr. Bachknig jointly provided us with a comprehensive overview about the company itself, its history as well as an explanation on the manufacturing, use and application of its products. Essentially, SPV is considered to be one of the largest Austrian foreign direct investments: more than 750 millions Euros have been invested during the past 30 years. The company was actually founded by Indian competitors but later taken over by the Lenzing group. Today the company is run under Austrian management and employs a workforce of 1,800 people. Basically, viscose is used as a substitute for natural fibers such as organic cotton or silk. Buyers are mostly to be found in the textile and non-woven industry (e.g. medicine, skin & body care products). SPV views itself as a commodity business which means that raw materials are the determinant components in the final price. The most important ones needed for manufacturing viscose fiber are pulp, caustic soda, carbon disulfide, sulfuric acid, finish oils and others. In addition to that, it was very inspiring to hear and see how SPV addresses the challenge of meeting the huge demand for energy resources required for its production process: For instance, for producing electricity the company may rely on two own power plants with five coalBusiness Focus ASEAN 2012 Page 24 of 137
fired vessels. Moreover, viscose production requires huge amounts of water which the company pumps from the nearby Jatiluhur dam. For later use in production, the company further operates an own water-treatment plants with a second one nearly completed. The world market for viscose fiber is currently estimated to amount for 5 million tons per year. SPVs current largest investment is the construction of a fifth production line which will increase its total annual capacity to 310,000 tons. The investment is worth USD 130 million and is partly supported by the Indonesian government. Together with its other global affiliates Lenzing aims to reach a production output of 1.2 million tons per year. Mr. Knoglinger also portrayed some of key industries that SPV serves and mentioned that the main quality criteria for viscose fiber is its running performance when used in later production. After the presentations we were split into two groups and went off on a factory tour to learn more about the production process. We were very interested to witness closely the various steps literally from a sheet of pulp to a finished product ready for dispatch. The facilities we saw seemed all very well organized, highly automated and technologically advanced. The tour also increased our awareness for the high environmental protection and security standards SPV uses in its production. The factory tour was followed by an excellent buffet in the guest reception room. Over dinner, we were able to socialize with the management of SPV. It was interesting to hear about Indonesia from a different perspective and we also learnt a great deal about the living arrangements in the country. Since foreign work assignments entail huge challenges especially for the families, SPV offers its expatriates a village to life with own residences, swimming pool, indoor gym, kindergarten and soccer and tennis courts. The programme then continued with detailed briefings of the management board members: Mr. Wolfram Kalt, Mr. Johann Knoglinger, Mr. Rudi Kern, Mr. Deden Rusfiandi, Mr. Gernot Salcher and Mr. Mohammad Chowdhury reflected on their specific duties at SPV. Key topics in their presentations included SPVs specific business model, the individual career paths of Lenzing expatriates, typical day-to-day activities in the different departments and an analysis on the dynamics and challenges of business development in Indonesia. By this, it became crystal clear to
all of us why Lenzing is consistently outperforming its competitors. After each leader gave his speech we had the chance to participate in a question and answer session. One question which was posed for instance referred to the most important challenges SPV is currently facing. In response to this, Mr. Kalt pointed out that, although basic education has reached a reasonably satisfactory level, higher education is not enough developed in Indonesia. Consequently, SPV finds it difficult to recruit specialists and executive personnel. Other obstacles mentioned were the inadequate access route to the company or constraints related to the further extension of the SPVs premises arising from illegal settlers within the catchment area of the company. The final part of this multi-facet company visit was dedicated to handing over of our presents to Mr. Kalt and his team. After all, with the distance to the home country being more than 10,000 km, our handed-over sweets and delicacies were joyfully received. Summarizing we had an insightful day at SPV and would sincerely express our gratitude for the time and effort SPV has dedicated to our visit.

PT Bursa Efek Indonesia In the morning of the 12th of September we enjoyed the unique and outstanding
opportunity to visit Bursa Efek Indonesia, the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The first
approximately 20 minutes we were given the chance to look around the facility and to see how a stock exchange looks from the inside. Frankly spoken, quite impressive. After that, a presentation of a stock exchange
employee was delivered to our group, which mainly consisted of Indonesian economic facts. Very interesting points such as the enormous economic growth Indonesia by 2050 will be the 7th largest economy in the world, far bigger than Italy or South Korea or the very decent demographic situation within the country Golden Age; by 2020, 180 Million working people with the average age of 35 years, meaning a very young and educated workforce, were explained in the presentation.
Another major topic has been of course the financial hardship and its following recession during 2007-2009. Interestingly enough, Indonesian economy has not been influenced at all, which can definitely be considered as a strong signal to further growth. What we also learned was that the country has quite surprisingly in regard of its vast commodity resources, a trade deficit, which is merely caused by great imports of capital goods. Our analyst though stated that by 2020 a trade plus could occur. Further explained by the employee, Indonesia should be kept in mind as a great place for Foreign Direct Investment, due to the fact that the country has the largest economy with the highest growth but also the lowest debt in South East Asia.
The problem of the Bursa Efek though is that foreign investors hold higher proportions of stock ownerships than Indonesians approximately only 400,000 local investors. To tackle this troubled issue, the Indonesian Stock Exchange is educating citizens about finance and stocks, merely in schools and universities.
Another issue to work on is the fact that only very few companies are listed, the majority in the finance and mining sector, although on the one hand the economy is growing on an extremely fast-paced and on the other hand the total net income of listed companies rose significantly during the last couple of years.
To sum it up, it has been an unforgettable experience to visit Indonesia Stock Exchange and to get first insights into how stock trade is managed and conducted.

In the afternoon our group departed for the ASEAN Secretariat where an interactive session with the ASEAN Deputy General was scheduled. During this meeting we got a deeper insight into the history, duties and vision of the ASEAN community and we were invited to ask questions.
The ASEAN Secretariat was founded in Bangkok in 1967 by the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN. Its basic function is to provide greater efficiency in the coordination of the ASEAN organs and for more effective implementation of its projects and activities. The Secretariats vision is that by 2015, it will be the center of a strong and confident
ASEAN community that is globally respected for acting in full compliance with its Charter and in the best interest of its people.
The aims and purposes of ASEAN include accelerating the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors I the spirit of equality and partnership, in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of ASEAN. It also tries to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and in adherence to the principles of the UN Charter. In addition, it wants to promote active collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields. Furthermore, the Secretariat wants to collaborate more effectively for the greater utilization of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade, the improvement of transportation and communication facilities and the raising of the living standards of their peoples. Another goal is to promote Southeast Asian studies and to maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organizations that have similar aims and purposes and explore all avenues for even closer cooperation among themselves.
The current ASEAN member states include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. This discussion round was a great opportunity to gain deeper insights in the work and goals of the ASEAN community and also to talk directly to the people involved!

Joint networking buffet The evening was closed with an invitation to a joint networking dinner at the residence of Dr. Andreas Karabaczek, the Austrian ambassador to Indonesia.
During this interesting evening we got the chance to improve our intercultural relations with some of the young diplomats, members of the ministry of foreign affairs, employees of South Pacific Viscose and of course, the ambassador himself. We really enjoyed talking to people from all over Jakarta and the atmosphere was really relaxing, mind-opening and accompanied by excellent Austrian food, what we highly appreciated. Many thanks to Dr. Karabaczek for the invitation!

SMECO Indonesia Company is a business entity under The Ministry of Cooperative and SME with the main duty to promote and market Indonesian cooperatives, small and medium enterprises products.
The head of the marketing division of SMESCO Indonesia was giving a
presentation about the innovative idea of the facilitation of Indonesian SME exports.
In order to understand the importance of this project, some background information was provided. More than 99,9% out of 51 million business units in Indonesia is SME (including micro businesses), which contributes with a percentage of 53% to Indonesias GDP. Obviously, there are severe problems SMEs are facing: lack of capital, managerial skills and market access. Therefore, the government established
a business unit in March 2007, SMESCO Indonesia Company, to help SMEs to promote and market their products based on a B to B and a B to C approach.
The activities are carried out in the SME Tower, a promotion center in Jakarta, which provides facilities for exhibitions as well as permanent retail showcase for unique, top quality Indonesian products at the so- called UKM Gallery. Besides, there is a permanent display for the 33 Indonesian provinces where their best products are presented in the Paviliun Provinsi. Furthermore, Kuliner UKM provides modern retail management training to empower SMEs. For instance, in October 2012 a workshop about food packaging techniques will be organized. Due to financing reasons, some of the building areas have to be rented out to external companies, as SMEs do not have to pay for the display of their products.
Nowadays, 1200 enterprises are involved in the program, whereas this number is constantly increasing. After two years of operating SMESCO all types of companies are represented, also bigger ones, as the project is very successful and very often brings a huge development.
The application process is a rather easy; sellers from the Indonesian provinces bring their products to SMESCO where the quality of the product is assessed and evaluated. In most if the cases products are changed to make them more attractive for customers, so to say packaging, for

As already mentioned above, the participation for producers is free of charge. Therefore, the consumer has to face higher prices than offered by competitors (about 30% higher). Nevertheless, SMESCO guarantees high quality, application of human rights principles in the manufacturing process and fair trade policies.
To conclude it can be stated that SMESCO Indonesia is a very successful pilot project with a promising outlook for the future, offering nice high- quality products from all over the country in a quiet and pleasant atmosphere and is definitely worth a visit.
Presentation at Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia)
The Indonesian Champer of Commerce and Industry, Kadin Indonesia, is the only business organization established by law and can descried as an umbrella organization of 33 regional branches throughout the country. It counts 175 business associations, works in cooperation with the government and serves the business community. Kadin Indonesia is privately financed through membership fees, different services it provides, for example trade origin certificates and donations or funding from members. Participation is not obligatory for Indonesian businesses.

seen as an economy of considerable size (approximately 847.000 billions of US dollars GDP), whereas the middle class is rising rapidly. During the last 11 years, the GDP per capita has doubled, from 2000 US dollars to more than 4000 US dollars from the year 2000 until 2011. Oliver Oehms states that 10% of the population earns more than 30% of the nations household. In his opinion, consumption can be seen as the driver of the economy. Besides, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is an important issue when it comes to the economic performance of Indonesia. FDI is growing due to the improved investment climate, strong macroeconomic fundamentals and availability of qualified manpower. In 2011, the total investment was 19,5 billion US dollars, whereas 30% out of that are joint projects, 26% have its origin in Singapore, 21% in Asia
(excluding Singapore) and 14% is contributed by Europe. The remaining 9% come from Africa and the Americas.
The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry supports foreign investors and businesses as it is an active partner in reform, it contributes as an Economic Roadmap to the government and in 2009 it has started a Business Support Desk serving international and domestic investors, traders and sourcing companies.

14th of September 2012 University of Indonesia Interactive Session with the students of the Faculty of Economy Visit to Taman Mini Indonesia
The program for our last day in Jakarta, before travelling further on to Bangkok, started again with a bus trip. Traffic turned out to be quite good and therefore we reached within 90 minutes the first destination of our todays agenda, the campus of the University of Indonesia in Depok.
Interactive Session with the Students of the Faculty of Economy, University of Indonesia Depok is a small city in the outskirts of South Jakarta. The campus is huge! It comprises an area of about 320 hectare, and it is also known as the green campus. There are four ecosystem components on the campus, which are:
Physical building and green landscape buffer of 170 ha, Water ecosystem of 30 ha (including 6 lakes), City forest area of 100 ha, and Supporting facilities and infrastructure, including environment buffer of 12 ha.
More than 33,000 students and more than 7,300 staff are regularly using the facilities provided at the campus.
After we had reached the building of the Faculty of Economy, our hosts provided us with a warm welcome followed by a short introduction about the University of Indonesia given by Agita Nalsalia, the Secretary General of the Management Student Society. In order to exchange our different experiences easily, Agita asked us to mingle by simply exchanging our seats. Lively conversations among students sitting next to each other immediately emerged. Following this first get together we enjoyed three amazing presentations held by our hosts. In his first presentation Muhammad Fadel provided us with a Short Introduction to Indonesian Economy. The growth figures he presented to us pointed all into one direction upwards. An interesting information was that Micro Enterprises contribute with around 33% to Indonesias GDP, they employ 91% of the countrys workforce, and they count for about 98% of Indonesias enterprises. Mardhutilla Amalia was then talking about Indonesias Young Entrepreneurs. He provided us with three success stories of former students who are meanwhile running successful businesses. He also presented us the latest trends for businesses, which start to develop from profit oriented to green businesses and now to social oriented businesses. Finally, Jayu Piamudya dealt in her presentation Indeed, we need people: Students for Society with various community development programs that have been established by students to support different groups of Indonesias population. After this comprehensive information and a short Q&A session we enjoyed another 45 minutes with our new friends on the campus and a lot of picture being taken.

Visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) On our way back to Jakarta we visited Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), which is a large cultural based recreational area. The journey through the park provides you with an insight to Indonesias manifold culture. The idea to build a small -scale Indonesia goes back to the former first lady of Indonesia, Siti Hartinah, and was publicly presented at a convention in 1970. Two years later, in 1972, the Harapan Kita Foundation started the Indonesian Miniature Project. In total the TMII comprises 14 museums: PurmaBhakti Pertiwi Museum, Soldier Museum, Indonesian stamps Museum, Pusaka Museum, Transportation Museum, Electricity & New Energy Museum, Telecommunication Museum, Penerangan Museum, Sports Museum, Asmat Museum, Komodo Zoological Museum and Reptile Park, Insects Museum, Research & Technology Information Center, Oil & Gas Museum, East Timor Museum and finally the Indonesia Museum. Pavilions in the park feature the different provinces of the archipelago, their different architecture, and they also show traditional household appliances, clothes, art, and handicraft. Taman Mini also provides information about the various ethnic groups and the differences in lifestyles. We had also a ride with the cable car inside the park, which conveys the dimension of Indonesia from a birds eye view. During your ride you can follow a reconstruction of the archipelago in a large lake beneath the cable car.

Invitation for dinner, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Indonesian Embassy in Austria The third official part of todays program was a very pleasant invitation for dinner hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Indonesian Embassy in Austria. We had been cordially invited to the roof terrace of Plaza Semanggi where we not only enjoyed our last dinner in Indonesia but had also time for further small talk with Ibu Miranda from the Indonesian Embassy and Pak Ito from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The great view and the illuminated skyscrapers in the immediate vicinity provided also the atmosphere to reflect the impressions one had gathered in the past 7 days being guest in this fascinating country.

17th of September 2012 Company visit at HFELE Thailand Networking dinner with Austrian expats C&C restaurant
On Monday, 17th September the official part in our 2nd host country started with a company visit at Hfele Thailand. It is the German-based group that manufactures and supplies hinges, drawer systems, architectural hardware, and other related fittings for the joinery, furniture, interior fitting, and hardware supply industries. We left the hotel at 9am and the right hand of the CEO, Mr. Frank Heyer (Supply Chain Director), welcomed our group at 10am at the Hfele Logisitcs Center, Bangkok. Together with his assistant, Ms. Buppha Samgkam, he showed us around the modern logistic facility where Hfele employs 200 employees. All the essential steps of the logistics processes were explained in detail: incoming articles, storing, picking operations, packaging, sending.
The highlight was the demonstration of a picking operation. High-end forklifts are picking requested items from the more than 3,000 articles that are stored in the highest wracking system (17m) in Thailand. To optimize the precision of the forklifts
the machines operate on a special floor. Cables that are integrated into that floor keep the forklifts in line and ensure safety and precision. Students were invited to take a ride with the forklift to experience a picking operation close to the action! Mr. Heyer explained that Hfele keeps 27mio Euros of stock. Interesting fact: One of our competitive advantages is that we carry a lot of extra stock. That is very important for our business, because unlike Europeans, Thais do not plan much ahead. Here we are going the extra mile, and it pays off! Due to the healthy growth during the last years, two extra warehouses had to be rented. Hfele is currently planning on enlarging the logistics and warehousing facilities. Mr. Heyer explained that there is still enough space for an enlargement on the property where the logistic center is located. The tour ended with refreshments in the entrance area at 11:20am. Before the second part of our Hfele visit, which was going to take place at the Headquarter, we were invited to a typical Thai Restaurant by the company.
At 1pm we arrived at Hfele Thailands headquarters in Bangkok. This building does not only serve as headquarters, but also as a modern designer showroom.
The next topic on the agenda was a company presentation by Mr. Heyer. We learned about the history of Hfele that started as a small hardware shop in Germany in 1923. After WWII internationalization began and Hfele expanded successfully to todays 35 fully owned subsidiaries around the globe. A lot of us were surprised to hear that Hfele Thailand is the largest subsidiary in Asia, much larger than the Hfele operations in China and India. Thailand is the Asia-Hub for Hfele!, Mr. Heyer explained. Hfele Thailand was founded in 1994; long before the Chinese or Indian subsidiaries, because Hfele was facing legal issues concerning ownership in these countries. Supplying 700 dealers in Thailand through its own delivery department, Hfele Thailand expects to achieve a turnover of 70mio Euros in 2012. Besides company history and key figures we learned about the sales process and sales channels of Hfele in Thailand, important cultural differences, market growth potential, marketing strategy and tools, CSR projects and HR specifics in Thailand. Directly after the presentation we had a very interesting Q & A session. The visit ended with a family picture in front of the Hfele Thailand headquarters at 3.30pm. All in all the presentation was very valuable for us to get a feeling about doing business in Thailand. It was a pleasure listening to Mr. Heyer, who is an extremely competent and knowledgeable expert on doing successful business in Thailand. The atmosphere during the whole day was very casual and interactive, which made it easy to ask a lot of questions. Some good news at the end: Mr. Heyer informed us about the possibility of doing internships at Hfele Thailand. With the words We are always looking for new talent, he encouraged us to send applications for internships directly to Hfele Thailand or to the German headquarters.

The further topics covered during this exciting day of speeches and workshops were the development of the economies in the ASEAN/South-Asian Pacific area and the macroeconomic policies applied as well as some details about how the ASEAN community works together within their common vision. Furthermore, we discussed different statistics and economical numbers in the following workshop. After a strengthening lunch, we could follow a presentation inviting us to invest in the ASEAN area and explaining the details of foreign direct investment and trade in the ASEAN countries, which was highly interesting to our fellow students of export-oriented management. Additionally, we were presented with the current and future developments of transnational railway and highway networks in Asia and ASEAN. This was especially interesting to fellows who were thinking about investing or building up business in or with Asian countries. We departed from ESCAP after taking a wonderful family photo in and in front of the UN building and drove to a harbor at the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. From there, we started our river boat cruise down and up the river, including a fantastic dinner and local food, to celebrate the 100th event organized under the premises of Prof. Anis Bajrektarevic, Chair International Law and Global Political Studies at the IMC FH Krems.

20th of September 2012 Day-long excursion WWII Cemetery WWII Museum River Kwai Bridge Kwai Railroad ride Floating-house Lunch Bamboo rafting Elephant trekking/riding Waterfalls This day was dedicated to a day-long excursion to experience some of Thailands nature and history. An organized guided tour was planned to give the BFA 2012 participants an insight into the countrys natural, cultural as well as historical perspective outside of the borders of its capital city, Bangkok. The first stop was the WWII Museum in Kanchanaburi and we agreed to meet at 6:30am in the lobby of the hotel. One of the first cultural lesson we learned, was that people in Asia think of time and in particular punctuality a little bit different than the people in the West. All participants were ready to go on time but we had to wait for all three organized minivan buses to arrive. Despite a still very early-morning pickup, everyone seemed excited and somewhat awake after discovering Bangkoks nightlife. Most were looking forward to a day of history and adventure ahead. The pickup van took us straight to Kanchanaburi, Thailand's third largest province, and famed for its World War II historical sites and breathtaking scenery.
Kanchanaburi and the WW2 Museum Kanchanaburi is definitely a good way to escape the busy life of Bangkok with field, forest and stream. It is a spot for people who want to experience a soft version of trekking. Our plan included activities like elephant rides, short hikes and bamboo rafting. The town is located in a very fertile valley, where one can see a lot of sugarcane fields. Apart from outdoor activities we did we also learned that this place is very well known for its Buddhist temple caves where worshippers gather to pray.

Our first stop was at the WW2 Museum which is a collection of a lot of WW2 war stories in photographs and instruments. It is located on the bank of Kwai river nearby the bridge on the river Kwai.
River Kwai Bridge Before lunch we went to the see the famous River Kwai Bridge and its surrounding area. This bridge was made famous by its dramatic story behind it but all in all is not as impressive as it is said to be. The bridge was first built in 1943 and the materials for it were brought from Java by the Imperial Japanese Army. The bridge was bombed a few times in 1945 and was rebuilt after the war. We took a long walk on the bridge back and forth and some of us also went to some neighboring Chinese temples which were just located nearby the bridge.
Bamboo rafting Bamboo rafting was another activity we did that they. We were divided in two groups, so when the first group went rafting the other one was elephant riding. Before going on the boat, each of us was equipped with a life jacket. Afterwards, when everyone was seated the exciting journey on the river started. This activity was really fun and we were lucky that the sun was shining. Thus, during the boat trip we could enjoy the nice view and we were even allowed to jump into the water. Approximately half an hour later we returned to our starting point and we were heading to the cute elephants.

Elephant riding and the waterfall Elephant riding was also a very nice
experience. We were always riding in pairs on an elephant and some of the riders let us ride alone while they took some pictures of us. Others could even sit on the elephants head. The round we made was pretty great as there were ups and downs which felt really exciting while crossing them, when sitting on these gorgeous animals. When we arrived back again we were heading to our next stop, namely to the waterfall. As we arrived at the waterfall we were really impressed by its beauty. Each of us was enjoying that wonderful view and taking a lot of great pictures. Apart from this we could go
swimming and climb up to stand directly under the waterfall. It was a really a great
experience.

Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs On Friday 21st September in the morning we departed to the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We were welcomed by the Director-General for European Affairs, Mr. Sarun Charoensuwan.
Then a highly interesting speech by Mr. Phanpob followed, giving insights about the relationship between ASEAN and the EU. He also pointed out some differences between these two ideas. Firstly he stressed that ASEAN should be seen beyond its 10 member countries as it also has to deal with challenges outside of ASEAN. Even though the 2015 targets will serve an important milestone it will not bring as much freedom as is enjoyed in EU at the moment (e.g. free movement of people will only apply to 7 professions and different languages cause a further barrier for those). While the EU has a clear regulatory bodies, the ASEAN change drivers are joint ideas and intent. Bilateral trade is already established between the EU and ASEAN countries, but Mr. Phanpob points out that an EU-ASEAN FTA would be of more
value. Furthermore, we learned that creating jobs would be difficult due to the lacking commission.
Still, the greatest challenge of ASEAN will be the integration of the 10 different countries, especially as some are more prosperous than others. Therefore, the People-to-People initiative was established. The following discussion dealt with topic like food security and how the essential integration should take place. After having more informal exchange with staff members of the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a family photo we enjoyed a free afternoon. Some of our group discovered the city center with the markets and palaces; others relaxed with a Thaimassage or went shopping. In the evening, most of us met for dinner to exchange experiences and make plans for the next day.

During that time I was travelling to Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. Additionally I spent one month in Beijing and Xian for a summer school. What I expect from the BFA 2012 is to further extend my knowledge of language, culture and the economy of SEA. Certainly the chance of meeting people and getting to know organizations that I would have never had the chance to know so well under different circumstances is the driving factor behind my motivation to join this study trip. I matriculated at the University of Economics in Vienna in March 2010. In September 2010 I started to study Export-oriented Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Krems where I will acquire a Bachelors Degree in 2013. During an exchange semester in 2011 I studied at the Universidad Panamericana in Guadalajara, Mexico. In addition to my commercial studies I had the opportunity of gaining three month of internship experience in the accountancy department of the Austrian headquarter of the multi-national Wrth Group. In 2012 I completed an internship in France, working in a business development company as an International Project Manager Assistant. I gained practical experience in conducting market research, product marketing, setting up and handling sales operations for US companies that aim to enter the European market. In 2010 I spent six months in Mexico, working as a volunteer for the organization EDURA. The objective of this organization is to provide education and opportunities to rural areas in Guerrero, Mexico to avoid rural depopulation and to save the culture of the people living in these underdeveloped areas. After attending High School I obtained my A-Levels at a technical school in the field of mechanical and plant engineering in 2005. Since I am interested in globalization and economics I focused on an international education at the International University of Applied Sciences IMC Krems. 2010 I graduated from the Export-Oriented Management Program with the focus on International Management & Business and Intercultural Management. In my third year I had the opportunity to study at the UDEM Universidad de Monterrey in Mexico, later in Canada at the Wilfried Laurier University. Currently, I am enrolled in the Masters Program Banking and Finance in Vienna. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE Besides my theoretical education I gained some hands-on experience while I was working in Great Britain, Germany and Vienna. During my studies I did an internship with ATEC-PPS in Vienna, who used to be an EPC Contractor of cogeneration and gas-steam power plants. Within the departmet of Sales & Marketing I contributed to the tendering process, contract drafting, wrote press releases of the current site in Turkey and elaborated a worldwide energy analysis. During my placement in the UK I worked with Fischer Connectors to not only connect the world but implement an ERP system. I was in charge of the internal and external communication of KPIs in the course of Lean Manufacturing and conducted a variety of market analysis. In 2011, I contributed to the development of the business model of a start-up called clearkarma.com. Besides I have been working in Sales as a Sales Controller with a Swedish organisation. EDUCATION In June 2010 I graduated from the Hertha Firnberg Schulen, where I attended the International Career Promotionprogramme, a project initiated by the European Union to foster the potential of linguistically talented, committed and performance oriented students. I chose the study branch of Sales and Catering Management with emphasis on international communication in business a class that ideally combined English and French with current economic and business matters. Coaching, E-learning and intensive communication and presentation training but also English as aworking language were among the core benefits of my education. LANGUAGES At school I had English as language of instruction, just like at the IMC. In 2007 went to Chile for a semester, one year after that I did an internship in France, at the Cote dAzur. The 3rd semester of my studies I spent in Madrid. Furthermore, I study Russian at the IMC.
EXPECTATIONS/NUMBER OF STAYS IN ASIA Unfortunately, I have not been to Asia yet, but I am already very much looking forward to get in touch with the many diverse cultures, languages and traditions. I think the Ambassador Series was a strong motivation to join this study trip. I am looking forward to learn about the economic interrelations and gather information of the political situation. Moreover, it will be interesting to learn how Europe and the European Union are seen in the rest of the world.

EXPECTATIONS/NUMBER OF STAYS IN ASIA I am attending the BFA for the second consecutive time as it provides young professionals the viable information on the economic situation of the region. The BFAs unique setup offers a content rich software of how to do business there as well as the intercultural know -how and political sensing. SEA and Malaysia are of particular interest to me as I did my internship at the Austrian Embassy in Malaysia (directly assisting the State visit of President Fischer in fall of 2010). In addition, the current events in SEA depict a very dynamic situation which is very interesting for the students to get accurate first-hand insights from experienced people who actually live and work in the region and thus have a greater understanding of the situation. This makes me feel that this program in South-East Asia constitutes a great benefit for all the participants.

EXPECTATIONS/NUMBER OF STAYS IN ASIA: I have never been in Asia so far, but have been fascinated by it for years. Therefore I am always seeking contact with exchange students/colleagues from this area to get an insight in their way of living and culture. I now want to deepen my understanding of the different cultures in Asia and furthermore learn more about the relationship between Asia and Austria/Europe. Anis H. Bajrektarevic (1964, Sarajevo) Former legal practitioner and the president of Young Lawyers Association of BiH Bar (late 80s). Former MFA official and career diplomat (early 90s). Research Fellow at the Institute for Modern Political-history analyses, Dr. Bruno Kreisky Foundation (19951998). Legal and Political Advisor for CEE at the Vienna-based Political Academy, Dr. Karl Renner (1997 2000). From February 1996 to December 2001, he served as a Senior Legal Officer and Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Vienna (ICMPD Liaison unit with Governments and IOs) at the Vienna based HQ of the Intergovernmental Organization ICMPD (International Centre for Migration Policy Development). Between 1994 and 2002, he additionally served on a consultancy basis following entities: the Foreign Policy Institute of the Johns Hopkins SAIS Washington; the Malaysian Trade Chamber; the Council of Europe, Directorate of Legal Affairs Strasbourg; and the American Bar Association CEELI /ALC Washington. Consultancies also include the capacity of Expert of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe /OSCE EEA/ for 200405; elected Specialist for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Geneva (UN ECE) 200708 and the ongoing capacity of the Corps Diplomatique advisor. Attached to the IMC University, Department of Export EU NAFTAASEAN, apart from teaching subjects of Geo-political Affairs, Intl. Strategies (incl. Sustainable Development and Environmental Ethics) and the Intl. Law and Law of IOs and EU, since September 2002 he serves as a Chairman for the International Law and Global Political Studies and from early 2006 as the Acting Deputy Director of Studies. The Oxford Academy of Total Intelligence entrusts him as its Advisory Board member, the NY-based GHIR (Geopolitics, History & Intl. Relations) and Canada-based GoE (Geopolitics of Energy) Journals as their Editorial Advisory Board member. He is also the Board member of the following foreign policy think-tanks: the Rome-based Geopolitica, the Athens-based RIEAS, and Ljubljana-based IFIMES. Prof. Bajrektarevic is the author of dozens ILAW/JHA and SDrelated presentations, publications, speeches, seminars, research colloquiums as well as of numerous public events (round tables & study trips, etc.). Against the background:
Prof. Dr. Anis H. Bajrektarevic serves as the chairman of International Law and Global Political Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Krems, Austria, and is the longest serving member of the EXP team. He himself teaches the Geopolitical Affairs; International Strategies (Sustainable Development); and International Public Law, Relations and Intl. & EU Institutions. Since the first EXP generation of 1999, every cohort of students (without exception) was taking all of his courses.
Students are encouraged to participate and establish an individual and comprehensive opinion on political, economic, legal and social science issues. The study of Human Development, Institutions and Instruments as well as the relation of state, individuals and international organizations to public law are major components of the curricular.
The IMC EXPORT Study Program encourages the development of foreign languages and hosts international events/visits and guest lectures which engage students in discussions and help develop their intellectual competence. Prof. Bajrektarevic has solely organized and chaired over hundred such events (nearly half of it in Geneva and Paris).
Students of the course International Public Law and Institutions have had the chance to visit more than 20 International FORAs during their study trip/s to Vienna, Geneva and Paris (Study-trip being itself unique undertaking in whole of Austria). The trips encourage the intellectual exchange between international organizations and universities. Students learn about international institutions by directly observing multilateral cooperation in three major European cities. This unique opportunity gives the students a practical approach and understanding of structure and procedures within international organizations. The newly developed concept by the Chairman Bajrektarevic is so-called Business Focus employability booster integrated seminar, in which fellows spend 2 weeks contrasting two different countries be it of Central Asia, ASAEAN or MERCOSUR countries. The BFA 2009 has successfully gathered 30 fellows of 7 nationalities being addressed by 40 speakers of 19 nationalities among which 4 ambassadors, senator, minister, late Malaysian king, and other high ranking experts. The BFA 2010 has gathered 32 fellows of 8 nationalities, being addressed by 42 speakers of 16 nationalities among which Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN, 4 ministers and 6 ambassadors with the venue at the respective Diplomatic Academies of Indonesia and Malaysia.

The IMC EXPORT Chair for IL&GPS has been encouraging and supporting students and graduates as to gain working experience at a number of international organizations such as the UNCTAD, UN ODC, UNIDO, UN OOSA, and various UN Regional Economic Commissions, as well as the HQ of ASEAN, NATO, SAARC and EU Parliament, Representations of the European Commission/ Delegation of EU (in Europe, CA and in Asia). Many students have spent their practical semesters working for the in diplomatic representations of Austrian, but also S. Korea, EU and the US be it Mission in Geneva, Vienna, NY, Brussels or bilateral representations on essentially every continent, including the Representations of the EU, Austrian and German Chambers of Commerce as well as the European Parliament.
