Sprunt
Project Architects

Sprunt is a leading architecture
practice founded in 1988 by
Robert Sprunt with offices in
London and Johannesburg.
Bringing together Architects,
Landscape Architects and
Urban Designers, Sprunts work
is grounded in research and
analysis. Each project is
developed with imagination and
passion, creating designs that
are inspiring, efficient and
enduring.
Our proposal combines the
skills of Landscape Architects,
Architects and Artists to
undertake a variety of analysis
and consultation exercises to
explore the potential of Coram
Fields.

We will work with specialist
Archaeologists, Structural
Engineers, Quantity Surveyors,
Arboriculturalists, Cost
consultants and specialists in
City Farms to ensure a
masterplan and report that is
inspiring and also achievable.

We are proposing an open
ended and flexible process, with
the users of Coram Fields at the
heart of the process.

The following document outlines
a timeline and shows
possibilities of where this
process can lead. The site of
Coram Fields is unique and a
growing, flexible, developing
project is proposed.
Adam Thomas
Design Coordinator and Project
Manager

Artists

Fourth Wall Creations is a small
creative practice based in east
London, set up by artists Ana
Ospina and Cara Flynn in 2005.
We design and deliver high-
quality, imaginative art projects
with a strong participative
element, usually in public
spaces. Our background in
theatre design and installation
art means we have a passion
for telling stories through our art,
whatever environment we
happen to be working in.
The Team Introduction
Introduction
Corams Fields Design Timeline
The first phase would be getting
to know the site. This would
involve a period of research,
discussion and analysis of all
the work to date. We would
develop detailed specifications
and commission reports by
Structural Engineers and
Archaeology / History
consultants which would inform
all design.

We would decide on a number
of questions that we want
answered in the consultation.
These could be very practical
questions i.e. what would make
this site more fun? or more
abstract questions such as
What would you see if you were
a bird flying over Coram fields or
an ant in the grass?
From this we would develop a
series of sketch designs which
would indicate potential and
possibilities for development.
These would for the basis of the
consultation events and
temporary landscapes which
we would develop in later
stages

Consultation and interaction
would develop from this
research and discussion, with
events based around themes
They would highlight various
ways the spaces could be used.
They would not be intended as
alternatives to be chosen, but to
stimulate discussion and
feedback from all users .
Because of the timescale in the
brief, we could divide the
exercises into stages based
around the various uses of the
site.

Participation is key to our
practice and we often work with
local communities when
creating artworks, particularly on
permanent projects. Our work is
playful, exciting and surprising
as we develop our ideas in
response to the surroundings,
often challenging perceptions of
the places in which they are
located. Through our wide and
varied professional experience
we have developed a range of
valuable artistic and
organisational skills such as
design development, project
management, community
engagement and workshop
facilitation.
Postcard competition
February, there is likely to be
limited use of external play
areas, but the need for
sheltered and internal
adaptations would be
paramount. During this time,
workshops and written, drawn or
modeled ideas can be the focus.

These would be developed with
as much user and volunteer
involvement as is practicable.
They will be developed to take
into account existing
commitments of Coram Fields,
and allow for essential structural
repairs to buildings to be carried
out. The events would lead
directly to small-scale
interventions, improvements
and, most importantly, and
ongoing dialogue and exchange
of ideas.

Our aim is to retain the spirit of
previous historical designs and
uses while adding new layers of
design to suit a 21st Century
space for children.

themes/areas that we want to
propose for the future designs.
i.e. a edible growing area, a play
area, an animal area etc. Within
these areas activities exist that
deal with the consultation
aspect.
Colours and sound Divide the
space into coloured areas using
coloured floor vinyl, with a diary

Chalk graffiti
March and April will bring
periods of fine weather, and we
can use temporary installations
to explore ways of using
spaces, altering the perception
of outdoor and indoor spaces by
temporarily dividing areas up in
different ways, exploring
alternative routes and creating
new surfaces. This could be
done with lightweight structures,
ropes, paint or tape.

ConsuItation and Design testing Phase 1
Corams Fields Design Timeline
The site is dominated by huge
mature plane trees. These are a
fantastic asset of the site but
also cause problems by the
amount of light they block out.
Can we create new landscapes
which take Coram Fields up into
the tree canopy? This can start
with the ideas of tree houses
and outdoor classrooms and
extend to skyline walks with
associated elements - viewing
pods, canopy nature trails and
maybe swings and zip-wires -
this approach opens up a whole
new world of experience and
exploration
dea: We have been developing
ideas which combine play with
growing plants. We have a
planned show garden at RHS
Hampton Court Flower Show in
2014 which could possibly be
transferred to Corams Fields

We would explore a strategy for
using edible plants and
landscapes throughout the
development. This can be
incorporated into built structures
as well as nature trails and
linked to animal husbandry and
education
Plants and people dont always
co-exist happily, and the bare
soil which dominates the grass
areas of Coram Fields show that
here we need to think about
these areas carefully. Among all
the possible activities, relaxing
on the grass is a very important
part of the life of Coram Fields.
We need to work with ecology
and find out how we can create
areas for relaxation and
contemplation alongside active
play.

Creative spaces do not just
serve one function -play, rest or
study, but allow all these and
many more to interact and co-
exist.. Flexibility brings
experimentation and
exploration. The landscape is
not a defined, absolute structure
but changes, with seasons and
growth, and we can work with
this adaptability to allow for
different landscapes to be
created as they are desired.

ConsuItation and Design testing Phase 2
Corams Fields Design Timeline
Animals draw people in, and
the closer young people can get
by feeding, caring, and
nurturing, the more valuable the
experience.

We would work with city farms
and zoos to explore the best
ways of facilitating this
interaction within the
management possibilities of
Coram Fields.

Another aspect of working with
animals which would be
particularly relevant to the
history would be in rearing
young animals and the care and
commitment this involves.

This can involve elements such
as hatching eggs and raising
chicks or special feeding days.
Here, working closely with
experts such as City Farms
would benefit and inform the
process.
The hay bale maze- A maze
covering a large area of the site
made using stacked up hay
bales (referencing the farm
aspect of the site). Visitors can
explore the maze answering
questions and carrying out
activities at certain points within
the maze which are relevant to
the future plans for the site.
The Easter Holidays are
important to explore the uses of
the site out of school hours and
the different demands that this
brings. During this phase, the
exercises could be more
interactive and playful. We
would explore the possibilities
and potentials of the livestock
and facilitate interaction and
highlight the care and nurturing
ethos that is at the root of
Coram Fields.

together different elements and
functions. Lawns need to be
located where conditions are
best suited for growth of grass.

The following is for a proposal which would have to agreed at interview stage as there are many variables in the extent and level of
consultation which would inform the process. The guide prices indicate what we regard as a feasibly process which will produce the
phased costed Masterplan as set out in the brief. The cost for sub-consultants - in particular the structural engineer and the
arboricultural work - can only be ascertained with a fuller examination of the problems, and potential, associated with the site
