RELIABILITY CENTRED MAINTENANCE

WHAT IS MAINTENANCE RELIABILITY CENTRED

Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) is a method for developing and selecting maintenance strategies and design alternatives, based on operational, economic and safety/ environmental criteria. Maintenance strategies can be identified as follows: Condition-based maintenance Time-based maintenance Corrective maintenance First line maintenance Functional testing
Maintenance Maintenance

RCM allows maintenance planning to optimise operational expenditure considerations, and to combine this with safety and environmental considerations. In addition, RCM can form the basis for addressing operational organisational issues.

DNVS RCM PROCESS

DNVs Reliability Centred Maintenance process is flexible so that it can be tailor-made to your needs. The key is that after preparation, the work is conducted in meetings with the clients experienced operating and maintenance staff. Typical steps in a RCM exercise are: Familiarisation with the operations, maintenance activities, available data and company risk criteria Data collection in particular maintenance costs and experienced failures Screening as a result of which systems with trivial operational, safety or environmental risk are excluded from further assessment Detailed analysis of remaining systems, based on the principles of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis in order to determine maintenance strategies Identification of maintenance tasks, and grouping of maintenance tasks
Plant Review and Identification of Systems Planning & Preparation of Analysis, Definition of Risk Criteria Data Collection Screening on Criticality and Risk Functional Breakdown: Identification of Equipment and (Sub) Functional Failures Identification of Failure Modes and Causes Risk Evaluation Selection of Maintenance Strategies Description of Maintenance Activities Grouping of Tasks and Job Packing

The keystone of RCM is to develop maintenance tasks and frequencies for performing them, using the functional redundancies designed into many systems. With RCM, maintenance tasks and task frequencies are developed recognising how each equipment item contributes to maintaining a system function. RCM is based on a systematic approach towards analysing system functions, failures of these functions and prevention of these failures.

MAIN BENEFITS OF USING RCM

One of the key benefits of introducing RCM is the potential to rationalise maintenance and inspection activities, leading to an optimisation of operational expenditure. This can be achieved through a shift from reactive to proactive maintenance and a reduced scope of work during shutdowns, leading to a reduction in plant downtime. RCM is a comprehensive and systematic approach, and it allows full utilisation of operating experience through active involvement of operating staff. RCM can therefore help share and transfer best maintenance practices across company assets.

The RCM activities could be part of a more comprehensive approach towards optimising operational expenditure. Asset Operations is a complex process in which reliability, maintenance, safety and environmental issues are addressed, and related to business objectives and compliance requirements. DNV can also support this process: through management and technical consultancy services, as well as providing dedicated methodologies and tools, other than RCM: e.g. Risk Based Inspection (RBI) and Reliability Availability and Maintainability (RAM) analyses.

DET NORSKE VERITAS

RCM ASSISTANT
RCM assistant is a computer program designed to support the RCM analysis work and help to optimise the preventive maintenance activities. The computer program contains a library of default sub-functions and failure modes to support the RCM process. Because the program is based on the Microsoft Access database structure, the results can be used as direct input to various maintenance data management tools.

WHY DNV
Det Norske Veritas is acknowledged as a world leader in the application of risk assessment and reliability techniques -including RBI and RCM- in a wide range of industries. The benefits of using DNV for RCM services are: DNV has a comprehensive and systematic yet flexible approach to maintenance planning Maintenance plans are optimised to safety, environment and profitability of operations Full utilisation of your companys operational experience, through active involvement of your own operational staff A cost-effective two-tier approach is adopted: screening brings focus, detailed analysis gives depth Use of dedicated software to undertake the necessary RCM work as well as supporting analyses of risk and reliability: e.g. RCM assistant for RCM, and RAMA for RAM analyses Use of qualified staff. RCM facilitators have been subject to a comprehensive training programme Dedicated specialist RCM skills for ship machinery and rotating equipment DNV can provide company training courses in RCM

Risk matrices for production loss, repair costs, safety and environment can be used to facilitate the maintenance optimisation process.

GLOBAL NETWORK WITH LOCAL RESOURCE CENTRES

DNV can provide global service delivery through locally available competent resources. DNV has a network of offices to support its clients. Offices in the Norway, UK, Benelux, USA, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia can provide local offshore and onshore services to assist in your quest for maintenance optimisation.
