Case Study – Fortis Investmenst and Fortis Bank, Brussels, Belgium Calypso and
Murex OTC Derivatives platform implementation and Conversion Project

Issue: Trade processing revaluation and post cash flow to Fortis position-keeping systems for
Inflation Swaps, Volume Swaps, Loans CDX, Interest Rate Swaps, Credit Default Swaps,
Swaptions, Cross-Currency Swaps and gather historical market data for end-of-day positions,
vaR calculations and out of the box Calypso reporting (delta buckets, Vega buckets….).
Connecting Calypso to all Fortis upstream and downstream systems, designing, implementing
interfaces from a business analysis requirements perspective, to include ThinkFolio for swaps
(CDS, IRS, CCS and Total Return Swaps, Minerva (Latent Zero) for bonds, equities and FX.
Define risk management: mainly Market Risk functionality for initial phase, then Credit Risk
as currently company wide credit risk done in a separate database aggregating various
systems output.

Define workflow for all products for daily trading in Calypso and Decalog (Portfolio
Management System), ThinkFolio (OMS) and DTCC (matching). Integrate Calypso and Murex
to T-Zero and SwapsWire to be used for trade pre-matching. Define specifications for
Calypso/Murex slice of Fortis production database for demo and “proof of concept” at the
operational view. Ensure that work with counterparty and novational fail process remains
intact with integration with Calypso and Murex and that the original trade remains, that new
deals, and unwinds have operational transparency.

First implement highest volume (in descending order): IRS, CDS, Inflation swaps, swaptions,
then volume Swaps, Loans CDX, and CDO tranches.

Approach: Detailed gap analysis undertaken to determine where Calypso and Murex vendor
“implementation templates” failed to meet the growing needs of Fortis Investments for TRS,
IRS, CDS, and CCX front, middle and back office specific. Vetted out some issues with TRS on
equity futures, modelised as futures for Risk purpose and TRS on commodities that were
(modelised for Risk, and not yet used in trade processing.
Developed some bank loan support in an earlier version (should be better supported now in
the product current version): pricer & GUI. Develioped specifications for Calypso and Murex
for Fortis Investments integration with Market Data, Fund Accounting, payments and pricing
publications for true STP of all derivatives and all trades.

2
Result: Recommended much care should be given to workflow definition prior to true
implementation of Calypso or Murex, making sure that it will not be too expensive to maintain
afterwards, as standard Calypso workflow “out of the box” is simplistic and not usable
directly. Calypso task station: was not allowing to capture all exceptions. In-house Fortis
application may have to be developed with Fortis tools and team tools to monitor Calypso
exceptions.

Recommended stricter discipline to regression testing before new Calypso release/patch or

change of configuration for Fortis Investments Asset Management, which is very crucial and
important, particularly during the first phase of the project.
