Introduction
This book is a compilation of the hard work of the students of the 2013 Summer Reading Skills and Vocabulary Development class, and a record of their work on their first projects. Students completed their first project over the Independence Day break. Students had two options for this project, each involving a different reading. Some students read a recipe and cooked it for friends, like Bonnys BBQ Chicken and Felicitass Hot Dogs. The other option was to read and respond to the Declaration of Independence, the document ratified on July 4 that announced Americans independence from Great Britain. Every student then prepared a short written report on their project. This book contains the written work of the students who completed their projects.

Festive Broccoli Erii

Ingredients: bunch of broccoli fresh cauliflower green pepper ranch salad dressing Italian seasoning ripe pitted olives garlic powder When I went shopping to get some vegetables and seasonsings with my host family, the grocery store was so crowded. My host family helped me to find foods in the store. Sometimes I asked a shop assistant about costs because I couldnt find a price tag. When I couldnt find a garlic powder was a problem. I tried to look around, but I couldnt. So I decided to buy a granulated garlic, instead. After the shopping, I started to cook a Festive Broccoli-Cauliflower Salad Recipe with my host father. I requested him to cut a big cauliflower and some carrots. While he cut, I also sliced onions and yellow peppers. After that, I decorated some various vegetables on a dish. A host father made dressing quickly. He cooked fast in any process because he used to cooking. He recommended to me adding sesame in dressing. So I put sesame into dressing. I thought it tasted better. I could dish up beautiful because all vegetables used for salad had many different color. After the cooking, my host father ate a salad at the dinner. My roommates said to me it was so good. But my host father said, Why dont you add pasta? If you do that, it will taste better. So Ill try to cook a pasta salad some other day.

Crash Jelly Jane

Ingredients: Cranberry Juice 350 mL Sprite 350 mL G2 (blue or water blue) 350 mL Shopping When I bought the stuff, I easily found everything. If you go to shopping for this recipes stuff, you can find everything at Target. And I think there is the cheapest. Cooking I had to wait few hours until every juice will be jello. It was very boring time for me. So when you cook this, you can study or watch TV, etc., on waiting time. But please dont forget them. Eaters feelings I cooked for my sharehouse owner, Jocelyn. She said, This is very healthy sweets! And its beautiful and fun! Difficulties Jello was very difficult for me to cut into the shape of a star, because it was very fragile. So I just cut few stars. If you try to cook this, you dont have to cut many stars. Because its very hard work, so maybe 6 to 8 stars are better.

Gelatin 5g each drink Water tablespoon for each 2 drinks Sugar tablespoon for each drink Extra Info If you want, you can change two points. *Cranberry juice can change to strawberry or raspberry juice. *You can cook other countrys flag. For example, for the Thai flag you dont have to cut jello. Just crash them. China flag needs red and yellow colour drinks, and you have to cut shape of star. Japan Flag just need red and clear colour drinks. But sorry, I think Mexico and Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia flags cant be cooked by this recipe. Because there has fine parts in their flags. Nevertheless, you want to cook that try to use chocolate pen. You cant write own flags design.

Grilled Link Hot Dogs with Homemade Pickle Relish Felicitas

Ingredients: bun sausage mustard ketchup

mayo red onions jalapeos

Our shopping was and cooking was fine. My friends said that the food tastes great. It was such a hard to make such tasty hot dogs. The problem was there wasnt enough hot dogs for my friends.

Barbecue Chicken Bonny

Ingredients: 10 chicken wings butter onion powder brown sugar Shopping I went to the super market to buy chicken wings, butter, onion powder, brown sugar, Worchester sauce, ketchup and prepared mustard. Cooking I put chicken wings, onion powder, brown sugar, Worchester sauce in a bowl. After 5 hours, put melted butter on seasoned chicken wings, then put chicken wings on the grill. After 5 minutes flip the grill. 7

Worchester sauce ketchup + water prepared mustard

Eaters Feelings My friends, no matter where they come from, all love my cooking. Difficulties I have no problem about shopping and cooking at all.

Red, White and Blue Kabobs Misaki

Ingredients Strawberries Bananas Blueberries Some skewers

The main reason, that why I decided to make this special kabobs for special day, is simple and easy to make. As you know, I like to eat delicious food, but Im not good at cooking. Thats why I chose this recipe which uses only 3 fruits and skewers. It was really attractive for me. I got these ingredients (exclude skewers) at Trader Joes that pretty close to our school MIIS. They have various fresh fruits and organic foods every day. First, I thought I dont need to buy large amount of food, because it was only for my roommate and me, so I got 2 bananas, 1 pack of strawberry and 1 pack of blueberry. However, I realized one serious problem while I was cutting bananas. I needed more bananas, but it was too late. I had to go out. I didnt have enough time to buy bananas. It was time to go. In addition, my roommate went out with her boyfriend. Therefore, I left a short memo to her on the refrigerator. I made fruits kabobs! Help yourself. Next day, there was a memo instead of her when I got up in the morning. Thanks Misaki. It was nice! Actually, this wasnt a cooking. I just catted and skewered fruits. Furthermore, I had a problem with bananas. It wasnt perfect dish. I got a feeling kind of 4th of July, but it was good experience. If I have a chance to make it, Ill try again with many bananas.

The Declaration of Independence Guldana

The Declaration of Independence is the historic document of freedom that had adopted by the Second Continental Congress in 4th of July 1776. This document is not only explained the reasons which led Americans to separate from the mother country. It was the first document in the history, which declared principle of the sovereignty as the basis the state system. The Declaration argues for the people right to rise up. Most part of the Declaration takes statement all kinds of accusations against the Parliament of England and the monarchy. The genuine importance of the Declaration is social philosophical part which includes three fundamental doctrines of the Enlightenment: the quality of natural rights, the social contract as a source of political power, the right to the revolutionary overthrow of the despotic government. All American people celebrate this day with full of proud sense. I asked my friend who immigrated to US 15 years ago if she believes the American Declaration of Independence is true. He replay was clearly reasoned. She told me that in her mother country it was hard to find a job or to do what you want to do. They depended on your religion, nationality, political views etc. She is really happy and pleased because now she knows how the legislation works not only in paper. Every country in the world has lows, which protect their citizenry, but The United States of America makes a reality of their signed rules. This is a result of great struggles for liberty.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. The Declaration of Independence Diana

Before telling you what the Declaration of Independence is for the American people I will tell you what it is in general. The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the 13 American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states. I am American, and this is my first time reading this important document. I think that this is the sign that our forefathers gave us to let us know that we are free thanks to the actions that some people did in honor of freedom for the future generations. The interviewee let me know that the Declaration of Independence is important for him and for almost all the Americans. Everyone should be proud of this document because it is the beginning of a great history. The Declaration of Independence is the basis of the nation as we know it. It marks the rights of the people as an independent society. We should be proud.
