Tommy Lee T.L. Osborn (December 23, 1923 – February 14, 2013) was an American Pentecostal televangelist, singer, author and teacher whose Christian ministry was based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In six decades as a preacher, Osborn hosted the religious television program Good News Today.

Biography

Tommy Lee Osborn was born on December 23, 1923, on the small family potato farm, in Grady County, Oklahoma. He was the seventh and youngest son of thirteen children, born to Charles Richard Osborn (1883–1966) and his wife Mary (née Brown) (1885–1951). His father, also a seventh son, was a nonpracticing traditional Baptist, That's supposed to mean something, Osborn once commented, adding Turns out, it did mean something. His parents were musicians, as were several of his brothers and sisters, and Tommy Lee started making music at a very young age. Growing up in the latter half of the 1920s, he saw his large family struggling through the depression years. In 1930, when Osborn was six years old, his father moved the family to Skedee, Oklahoma, in search of another, more profitable farm. At a church in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, he met future televangelist Oral Roberts, who would become his lifelong friend for over 70 years, until Roberts's death in 2009. Osborn frequently went with Roberts to help with evangelical meetings. Roberts did most of the preaching, Osborn did everything else, including playing the accordion and the piano for the musical part of the meetings. Osborn had experienced a Christian conversion in 1937, at the age of 13, when his older brother took him to a Pentecostal church in Mannford. Gradually, each of his six brothers moved out of the family home until TL was the only boy still living with his parents and helping his 60-year-old father on the potato farm. He admitted that he was reluctant, even scared, to ask his father's permission to move out and begin traveling. Finally, while sorting potatoes in the cellar, he plucked up courage to make the request and was greatly surprised when his father said yes.

In 1939, aged 15, Osborn was milking the cows when he began to cry. He fell on his knees, praying and asking God what was happening. The Lord, he said, called him to be an evangelist, while he laughed and cried at the same time, overwhelmed by what was happening to him. He dropped out of high school after completing eighth grade and hit the road with E.M. Dillard, a traveling evangelist. Osborn was responsible for organising evangelistic meetings and was also in charge of youth services in the evening. He traveled with Dillard through three states. The last one was California, and he met Daisy Washburn, in Los Banos, California at one of the meetings. It was 1941 and he was only 17 when he fell instantly in love

On April 5, 1942, Osborn married graduating high school student and farmer's girl, Daisy Washburn Osborn (born September 23, 1924 in Merced, California). He was 18, and she was only 17. Shortly thereafter, they set out on a life of ministry and missionary travel, including a trip to India when Osborn was still only 21. In time, they carried the Gospel of Christ to tens of millions of people all over the world, declaring it with faith and confidence. However, that early mission in India, preaching at Lucknow, was not fruitful. Their ministry lasted less than a year in India, and they returned home because of critical family sickness. In 1947, the Osborns had their only daughter, LaDonna Osborn (b. March 13 of that year; she was raised accompanying her parents on the platforms of global mass miracle evangelistic crusades.

The Osborns first gained public notice shortly after returning from India, as evangelists on the Big Tent Revival circuit in the United States and Canada. There, they preached to audiences often numbering over 10,000, in open-air meetings and under large tents in settings such as fairgrounds and stadiums. Other young contemporary evangelists, including Oral Roberts, Billy Graham, Jack Coe, R.W. Schambach and A.A. Allen, were also on the circuit. The Osborns emphasized the love and compassion of God, rather than the fire and brimstone theology style commonly used by evangelists of the era, and they practiced supernatural healing in their meetings. The Osborn's egalitarian ministry philosophy was also not accepted by many conservative audiences.

By the early 1950s, their emphasis began to shift more and more toward international missions. They held large crusades in Latin America, Asia, and Africa and crowds grew rapidly, at times exceeding 100,000. After Osborn's crusades in Thailand in 1956 and Uganda in 1957, Pastor Fred Wantaate of Makerere Full Gospel Church said that after that crusade in Mombasa, the fountain of the river of Pentecostalism spread in the heart of East Africa. Around that same time, he met another future televangelist, Marilyn Hickey, eight years Osborn's junior, with her new husband, Wallace. The young couple traveled around in her husband's car, conducting tent revival meetings in various towns. Together, Osborn and Hickey prayed for the sick and she became a guest speaker at his conferences. He was lifelong friends with her family until his death just four months after Hickey lost her husband, Wallace.

Over the course of the next five decades, Osborn and his team traveled to more than 70 countries including Kenya where Apostle Dr Joe Kayo got born again in his Crusade in 1957(Joe Kayo later turned to be a great pioneer of Pentecostal movement in East Africa) and reached millions of people. They created prolific quantities of evangelistic and training materials, some of which were translated into more than 80 languages.

Osborn's wife of 53 years, Daisy Osborn, died in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 27, 1995, at age 70. Thereafter, he continued to travel and conduct crusades around the world for another 15 years. Osborn died on February 14, 2013, at the age of 89. According to his daughter, LaDonna, he had been in good health until his body began weakening just a few days before he stopped breathing. He was interred next to his wife at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma (the same cemetery where Oral Roberts had been interred nearly four years earlier). Osborn was survived by his daughter, three of four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

LaDonna Osborn continues to operate the ministry founded by her parents, including leading international crusades in the developing world every year. His grandson Tommy Ray O'Dell has also followed in his grandfather's footsteps and has a ministry focused on evangelism and education in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Like his grandfather, he often draws large crowds and it has been claimed that miracles have taken place in his services.

The ministry of T. L. Osborn and Daisy Osborn has made an unprecedented impact on the world in our time. They are valued among the greatest soulwinners of this century .

As young missionaries, T. L. and his wife, Daisy, determined to take the gospel of Jesus to the unreached multitudes. In the years since, they have pioneered many effective methods and tools which have enabled them and thousands of other Christian workers and national church leaders to accomplish this goal.

Early in their ministry overseas, when first confronted by immense crowds, the Osborns introduced the concept of successfully praying for the sick en masse. In one of those early crusades, 125 deaf mutes and 90 totally blind people were miraculously healed by the power of God.

They are both energetic and prolific writers. Their special series of 18 gospel tracts has been published in 132 languages and distributed at the rate of over a ton a day for many years. T. L. has authored several powerful books, including the living classic, Healing the Sick.

The Osborns have ministered in nearly seventy nations and their team effort in missions is unequalled as they preach the good news to the world: that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (He. 13:8).

True Story – Ambassador Monday O. Ogbe : My Encounter with The Lord Jesus Christ in London Saturday, 5am, 22nd of April 2006

I was born into a Christian family, have been a Christian, busy going to church, attending activities and serving as best I could until this encounter that turned my life around. On the 16th of March 2006, I was pacing up and down the hospital hallway in London as my wife had already been in labor for three days. The doctors finally concluded that if she did not have the baby naturally by morning, she would have to undergo a caesarean section. Unknown to us, my mother in law had already seen in a vision that she might not make it through this delivery. Thank God for godly mothers-in-law. Of course, my wife and I did not know about this.

It was during this pacing up and down that I received a strong impression upon my mind to initiate a forty (40) day fast beginning the next day, which was the 17th of March 2006. I was alarmed because I had never carried out a forty-day fast before. This is how you distinguish the fleshy thoughts and thoughts impressed upon you from our heart to our mind by the Holy Spirit in us. He will tell you to do something scriptural that you will not naturally succumb to. I began a conversation with the spontaneous thought lighting upon my mind, thought in response to thought impressions, I then made a requisite to know what I would be praying about for forty days.

Next instruct was that I should pick a jotter and a pen and I began to write right there in the hospital ward the impressions I was receiving. Rather than pray for my wife, I found out the prayer points coming to my mind were on pastors, the churches, unity in the body and all. It was then I asked God, if I were to carry out this task, I would want to see Him before this 40 days fasting ends. There was no response I believe now because the condition for Him manifesting was going to depend on my obedience to the first instruction to fast 40 days.

A point to note here before I continue the story is that God will not take the next move beyond your last point of obedience. If He instructs you to do something, you don't do it, He shuts down until you get back to the last point of disobedience and obey. Read Jonah's account. Jonah ran in the opposite direction to God's assignment. Through the storms, as long as Jonah was in disobedience, God never spoke, until Jonah, after his Futile attempt to commit suicide failed, He cried out to God.

Jonah 2:1-10

1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly.

2 And he said: I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.

3 For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.

4 Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’

5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.

6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God.

7 "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.

8 "Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD."

10 So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

A Word For Someone

"Listen dear daughter and son of the living, loving God. God is loving and merciful but God also plays hard rock solid football. Do you want to engage Him in a nasty football match?  Don't even contemplate it. You will end up with swollen limb. Even at that, He loves you and continues to love you and me with an everlasting love. You carry His Spirit within You. You were created in His image and likeness.

You are His pet project, He is zealous for you even when you are deep, deep and deep in sin, He looks at you with pity, exploring, orchestrating circumstances and situation that will lead you back to His loving alms. You are not your own, you have been procured with a price, you are heed in Christ, in God. You are the apple of His eyes, you are royalty, you are a priest unto Him, you are special. He says if you can consider how bright the stars are, you are brighter than the stars of heaven. He says no single hair drops from your head that he does not know. He counts them and knows their number. "

Luke 12:4-7

4 "And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!

6 "Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God.

7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Now the encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ continues

Behold, on the 22nd of April 2006, three days to the end of the forty-day fast at exactly 5 am in the morning, God kept His part of the bargain.  I was half awake when this Being, in human form, with His hands folded behind His back, bent forward slightly, looking at me on the floor, walked gently, one step at a time, not in a hurry, walked towards me into the lounge through the window area. I could make out His form but could not see His face clearly.

You know the type of dressing Jesus dresses in the middle eastern films that we watch. Immediately He came near me, the area around my feet where He was standing began to vibrate with so much force as if it never existed, more like the area just dematerialized so to speak. As He moved towards my chest, neck and head area, same thing happened and He kept going back and forth. Every area He left recombined again as before and the process continues as before.  There were no words to describe the raw power of that experience; I lost track of time and I became afraid and began to beg that He should end and He should tell me what he wanted me to do for Him while rolling uncontrollably on the floor. That was my encounter with the manifest power of our heavenly Father.

After that trance experience, I began to see different vision of the body of Christ. On one occasion, in the dream, the Lord Jesus Christ walked in, His body was all disjointed but connected with tiny skin ligaments. Each of the parts was a church ministry. I could make out ministries I was familiar with. The connections between the body parts were not firm. I now understand that the church institutions or ministries as we know them today, are dividing His body, the individual members of His church making up His body because of pride, petty ego and all the lust that the flesh presents. Manifesting as Inter church competition, leadership struggle, diversion of members, running down other ministries, fight going on between church members, leadership stealing and living flamboyant lifestyle that does not reflect the living standard of members and the list goes on. If you are such, depart from iniquity, because our God is a consuming fire and remember the sin of Balaam who for monetary lust, misrepresented God and handed Gods blessed children unto satan through evil counsel to the adversary.

I now asked the Lord where I was to fit in this lightly connected disjointed body of His. He told me to look for churches that make disciples of men and that I should not be moved by numbers.

The rest is History. I now realized my confidence in Him was built up after the encounter, I now had a sense of purpose and mission. All the assignment God gave me in subsequent dreams were consistent with this first assignment. There has been no controversy at all. I do sometimes derail, but He lovingly leads me back and sometimes with bruises to show for disobedience. The power and presence of the Holy Spirit has enabled me to accomplish things that I would naturally not be able to in reaching out to specific area of assignment. God fills us with His Holy Spirit to equip us for ministry. Never take on any task for God without the divine enablement and assignment.

This revelation gave me the confidence and assurance that God is available and more than desirous to engage us in conversation, if we are will to tune in to His frequency and ask from Him in faith. He speaks through trance (open visions) as in this case, through dreams, through image impressions, spontaneous thought that lights upon our minds, through circumstances we face, people we meet, ordained men and women of God, through children, through silence and through the word of God. It is critical to note that the inner witness and the word of God has to agree with what we have seen, heard or impressed on our mind. Satan and demonic spirit also speak, impress upon our minds as well. Jesus has alerted us on this in :-

John 10:27

27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Assignment 1

Have you had an encounter with your Heavenly Father like the one I just recounted? If you haven't, I encourage you to ask for one. Not for show but that you desire to build a stronger relationship with Him than you have right now. Start at the point you are at. Are you missing the mark, start from there. Remember the prodigal son, the father welcomed him despite the sin. That is the father’s heart. Sometimes, we get into a mess because we do not sense God in our lives. He is waiting, waiting to engage you and me.

Stop right now and pray asking him to reveal Himself to you, I mean a tangible manifestation. Not some useless encounters that you just forget within days. Every time I recall the above experience, it is as fresh as ever. It is crafted into my DNA forever. Ask Him to reveal Himself to a love one, a wife, a husband, a partner etc and believe it. See what happens. God wants to be believed, he yearns to be believed. Our faith says I believe you and counting on you to do what you want to do.

Now apart the series of healing, deliverance and restoration I personally experienced, the following several events fueled my anger into this minister -  My mum died at age 44 of high blood pressure – My eldest sister died at 44 of breast cancer and my dad at age 77 of prostate cancer. So, I am angry at satan for stealing from my loved ones and I am hungry to the get the best of God. Not just for myself but for others so they don’t need to loss their parents or sibling at a young age and sy can fulfill their days in sound and perfect health in Jesus name, amen.
