FEUDALISM Feudalism is a system of promises that governed the relationship between lords and vassals.

Everybody, from peasants to kings is in the feudal system. Kings and queens are all lords of every people in their nation. To able to protect themselves lords built castle, but the castle aren't built with stones but in wood. The nobles were vassals of the kings and queens. The lords are responsible for their vassals (nobles), but if the lords break their responsibilities the nobles can break ties with them. The vassals have more responsibilities; they have to give money to the lord every time there is a special occasion. They also have to give shelter and foods to the lords every time they have to visit. A vassal could serve for two lords. Knights served both lords (kings and queens) and nobles, for exchange of lands. Knights have to be paid in fiefs or land, since all their equipment is so expensive. If they have enough fiefs knights could be lords themselves. Peasants have to live in a manor, a house of a knight, to work for knights but for exchange they get protection. The peasants could keep some of their items that they produce. The feudal system can be very confusing if it isn't properly organized.

In 1215 a group of nobles wanted to let the king to look for their rights. In the middle of the field of Runnymede, near London they let King John sign the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta are the list of rights the king have to follow and cannot ignore (Its name is a Latin phrase meaning Great Charter). King John agreed on it and signed it. Magna Carta was one of the first documents to protect the rights of the people. Magna Carta was so influential that the British still consider it part of their constitution. Some of its ideas are also in the U.S. Constitution. Magna Carta required the king to honor certain rights. Among these rights was habeas corpus, a Latin phrase meaning you have the body. The right of habeas corpus meant that people could not be kept in jail without a reason. They had to be charged with a crime and convicted at a jury trial before they could be sent to prison. Before, kings could arrest people for no reason at all. The Magna Carta required that everybody have to follow the laws, especially the kings. The Magna Carta inspired all the English to find more ways to limit the king's power. A council of nobles was made called Parliament, the lawmaking body that governs England today. By the late middle Ages, kings could do little without Parliaments support. The English continued to work to secure and protect their rights. To ensure that everyone was treated fairly, people demanded that judges be free of royal control. Many people believed judges chosen by the king would always side with him. Eventually, in the late 1600s, the king agreed to free the courts of his control. This creation of an independent judicial system was a key step in bringing democracy to England. BLACK DEATH While the England and France were fighting a great new treat came. The crisis was called the Black Death, a deadly plague that swept across the nation of England. The plague originally came from central and eastern Asia. Unknowingly, traders brought rats carrying the disease to Mediterranean ports. From there the disease quickly spread since the flease bit the infected rats and transfer it to humans. The black death wasn't cause by one disease but several, one of the worst one were the bubonic plague could be identified by swellings called buboes that appeared on victims bodies. Another even deadlier form could spread through the air and kill people in less than a day. The Black Death killed so many people that many were buried quickly without priests or ceremonies. In some villages nearly ev

Some historians think Europe lost about a third of its population. This huge drop in population caused sweeping changes in Europe. There werent enough people left to work in the fields. The peasants and serfs who had survived the plague found their skills in high demand. Suddenly, they could demand wages for their labor. Once they had money, many fled their manors completely, moving instead to Europes growing cities.

CONCLUSION I believe the 3 most important factors for the decline of feudalism were: 1. 2. 3. Magna Carta The Crusades The Black Death

because when the Magna Carta was signed everyone was equal, especially the kings. Also they have the crusades because since they have lost their holiest land. Then Black Death came since all the serfs gained their skills and the manor system fell apart, so they were free from working at the knight's manor.
