FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 16, 2013 STATEMENT CONCERNING FINAL RESOLUTION OF NORTHAMPTON POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATION Today I am announcing a resolution of the investigation into possible improprieties related to the payroll records of one of the Northampton Police Departments civilian employees. On September 9, 2013, Chief Russell Sienkiewicz became aware of possible improprieties with regard to the employees payroll records and immediately initiated an internal investigation. On September 12, 2013, with more information gathered, Chief Sienkiewicz notified the Northwestern District Attorneys Office of his internal investigation and sought its independent review. Due to the working relationship between the NPD and the Northwestern D.A.s Office, and to avoid any appearance of conflict, the Hampden District Attorneys Office was brought in the following week to continue the investigation with Chief Sienkiewiczs participation. On the afternoon of September 20, 2013, Chief Sienkiewicz suspended two NPD employees, placing them on administrative leave with pay while the District Attorneys investigation continued. Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni has now notified Chief Sienkiewicz in writing that his office has completed its investigation and, in lieu of filing criminal charges against either NPD employee, his office supports an administrative resolution of this matter reached by the City of Northampton. As a result of the District Attorneys decision, I have effected an administrative resolution whereby Maryann Keating and Scott Savino are no longer employees of the Northampton Police Department. The agreements entered into assure that the City of Northampton has been made financially whole, including its legal and investigatory costs. I believe that this resolution is just and warranted and in the best interests of both the City of Northampton and the Northampton Police Department. While this matter has been an unsettling time for our community and the Northampton Police Department, I want to reassure residents that both the Hampden District Attorneys investigation and the Citys internal investigation have concluded that this matter was isolated and that no other NPD personnel were involved. I am thankful that the criminal investigation has been closed and that our police department and community can move forward. As I indicated in my original statement on this matter, I continue to have full faith and confidence in Chief Sienkiewicz and in the men and women of the Northampton Police Department to protect and serve the residents of our community.
